Bury AC's seniors secure promotion to top flight

Yahoo3 days ago
It was a momentous day for Bury AC at the Leigh Sports Village last Saturday as the senior team came second in the final North of England Track and Field League fixture of the season.
Having started the day at the top of Division One (West), the squad only needed to place fourth to secure promotion to the Premier Division.
Second place overall on the day behind a strong Preston team saw Bury run out as commanding champions and will see them compete in the top division next year, much to the delight of team managers Byron Edwards and Hannah Lucas.
This is only the third time in 50 years the club has made the top division.
The standout performance of the day came from Matthew Wheatley in the A 100m. The 17-year-old won in a new personal best of 10.8secs - a time that moves him into the top 40 in the UK in his age group and is the fastest by a Bury athlete for many years.
Martin Clark and James Brown were convincing winners in the 5,000m A and B races, with Martin winning the A with 15mins 26.2secs and James winning the B in his club debut with 15:46.9. Conor Wilkinson produced a gutsy finish in the B 800m, clawing back the leader to secure victory with a dip on the line in 2:04.2, while Roger Morley, in his 50th year of competing in the league, won the B hammer with 11.78m. Alia Braithwaite had a busy afternoon, winning the B 3,000m in 11:11.4 as well as scoring vital points in the 800, 1500 and 100m. Rachel Marshall won the 2,000m steeplechase in 8:06 and also competed over 1500 and 3,000m. Lizzi Cheshire had her usual busy day for the club, competing over several events and securing a victory in the B 100m hurdles with 21.1, while Leah Osunkoya won the B 400m hurdles in 1:23.4. The men's 4x400m relay squad made sure the day ended with a Bury victory. The quartet of Peter Gardner, Jayden Dacosta, Luke Harreld and Conor Wilkinson performed brilliantly.
The squad was missing a number of key individuals due to the holidays, but the team spirit shone through. Young combined-event athlete Jemima Miles scored vital points across the long jump, shot, javelin, 100m hurdles and high jump, while throwers Halle and Esme Davies-Fernyhough and Lucy Hill scored vital points in their events, as did sprinters Carraghen Spence and Leticia Da Silva.
Matthew Nolan put in a great shift for the men's team in the throws and the jumps, while Harvey Rossington-Rose made a great return to the club with a strong performance over 400m hurdles, teaming up with Patrick Babb. Distance runners Luke Harreld, Jack Griffiths and Paul Johnston covered several events, as did young sprinter Luke Drinnan.
As well as athletes, the club also secured points through supplying officials. The team on the day comprised of Chris Lucas, Jeremy Gold, Fiona Healy and Jacqui Cross among others and all made a vital contribution to the success of the Bury team.
The next team fixture will be the Mid-Lancs League on August 16 at Blackpool with the women's team currently holding third place in Division One and the men topping Division Two and looking in a strong place to secure promotion.

‘Medical Arranged' – Newcastle United Set to Sign £35m Serie A Star

Newcastle United Make Breakthrough on Major £35m Transfer Deal In what is shaping up to be a transformative summer for Newcastle United, a major breakthrough has finally been reached in the transfer market. AC Milan's highly-rated centre-back, Malick Thiaw, is on his way to Newcastle for his medical, set to begin on Monday morning, according to Sky Sports. The deal, expected to cost the Magpies around £35 million, has been hailed as a significant step forward for the club, particularly after missing out on several other targets this summer. Newcastle's Ambitious Transfer Window Newcastle United's transfer activity has been under close scrutiny following a mixed window so far. While they've managed to bring in a few players, they've found themselves in competition for key targets, making it difficult to strengthen the squad in the way they had hoped. However, the potential acquisition of Thiaw has raised hopes that they can still finish the summer with key additions. The 22-year-old German defender, who joined AC Milan last summer, has impressed in Serie A with his strong defensive performances. Thiaw's arrival at St James' Park is expected to bolster Newcastle's defence significantly. His pace, versatility, and ability to read the game will be valuable assets to manager Eddie Howe as he seeks to build a team capable of challenging for European spots. Photo: IMAGO As reported by Sky Sports, the transfer is now on the verge of completion, with the defender flying to Newcastle for his medical assessment. 'Malick Thiaw is flying into Newcastle this evening and will start his medical at the club on Monday morning,' the report confirmed. This deal represents more than just a signing; it signals a statement of intent from the Magpies as they continue to build upon their newfound wealth and growing ambitions. Thiaw's Impact at AC Milan Thiaw's time at AC Milan has been relatively short but impactful. Despite being relatively young, the German has already demonstrated his potential in one of Europe's top leagues. His performances in Serie A last season proved that he can handle the demands of high-level football, and his physicality and composure in defence will complement the current defensive options available to Eddie Howe. For Newcastle, strengthening their defence has been a priority. With an eye on further European progression, ensuring that the backline is solid and reliable is paramount. Thiaw fits the profile of the type of player that Newcastle are keen to bring in – young, talented, and with significant room to grow. The £35 million price tag reflects the confidence the club has in the player's ability to make an immediate impact. What's Next for Newcastle? While Thiaw's signing is a key development, it is only one part of a busy end to the transfer window for Newcastle. The club is still in pursuit of a striker, with speculation surrounding moves for Brentford's Yoanne Wissa and Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson. Furthermore, Porto's Samu Aghewowa is also reportedly under consideration as they look to bolster their attacking options. Newcastle's business this summer has been both promising and frustrating, with the club missing out on certain targets. Yet, with Thiaw now on the verge of joining and other potential signings on the horizon, the future looks bright for Eddie Howe's side. Our View – EPL Index Analysis The signing of Malick Thiaw feels like a much-needed breath of fresh air. The Magpies have been in the hunt for quality defensive reinforcements for some time, and Thiaw represents exactly what the club needs to continue its upward trajectory. At just 22 years old, he has the potential to form a rock-solid partnership at the back with the likes of Sven Botman and Fabian Schär. The £35 million deal seems like excellent value for a player with such a high ceiling. After missing out on players like James Maddison and other key targets earlier in the window, signing a player with Thiaw's calibre is a big boost to the squad. The ability to strengthen a defence that was already strong last season is exciting, and it could make the difference in securing a top-six finish and potentially qualifying for European competition. Of course, it's not just the defence that needs attention. The attack is still a priority for Eddie Howe, and with names like Yoanne Wissa and Nicolas Jackson being linked, it seems as though the club is determined to push forward. If these deals come to fruition, Newcastle could be in an incredibly strong position heading into the new season. With more activity expected in the coming weeks, the excitement around St James' Park is palpable. The Magpies' future is looking brighter by the day.

Match Report: Liverpool Suffer Shootout Defeat to Crystal Palace in FA Community Shield

Crystal Palace Triumphs in FA Community Shield Penalty Drama Against Liverpool The 2025 FA Community Shield turned into a thrilling spectacle as Crystal Palace edged out Liverpool in a penalty shootout at Wembley. The Reds, with a fresh look under manager Arne Slot, had hoped to kick off the new season with silverware, but Palace fought back valiantly, denying Liverpool their first trophy of the campaign. Liverpool's Early Promise Liverpool started brightly, with their new signings making an immediate impact. Hugo Ekitike, who was making his debut for the club, wasted no time in announcing himself on the big stage. Just four minutes into the match, the young forward gave the Reds the lead with a clinical strike, sparking hope among the Liverpool faithful. However, the advantage was short-lived. Crystal Palace responded just 13 minutes later when Jean-Philippe Mateta converted a penalty after a challenge inside the box. The Eagles showed their resilience, and the score was level at 1-1, with both teams now eyeing the decisive breakthrough. Photo: IMAGO Debut Delight and Bizarre Goal Liverpool regained the lead in the 21st minute through another debutant, Jeremie Frimpong. The full-back made an impact in his first competitive match, albeit in a rather unusual fashion. A cross from the right wing seemed to hang in the air before dropping over goalkeeper Dean Henderson and nestling in the back of the net. It was a fortunate goal for Frimpong, but one that the Reds were happy to accept. Despite this setback, Crystal Palace refused to back down. As the match approached its final stages, Palace's Ismaila Sarr found himself in space, escaping the watchful eye of Virgil van Dijk. The forward seized the opportunity and drilled home the equaliser in the 77th minute, sending the match into extra time. Penalty Heartbreak for Liverpool The penalty shootout that followed was a dramatic affair. Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, and Harvey Elliott all stepped up to take penalties for Liverpool, but none of them could find the back of the net as Palace's goalkeeper, Henderson, became the hero of the shootout, saving all three efforts. In the end, it was Justin Devenny who sealed the win for Palace, calmly converting his spot kick to claim the FA Community Shield. For the Eagles, this victory came just weeks after their FA Cup success at the same venue, a remarkable achievement for the club. A Tough Start for Slot's Reds Despite a promising opening to the game and strong performances from new signings, this was a painful defeat for Liverpool. Slot will undoubtedly be disappointed with how the match unfolded, especially after his side dominated possession and created plenty of chances. However, the penalty loss serves as a reminder that football is not always about the early dominance, but about capitalising on key moments. For Crystal Palace, this victory is a testament to their resilience and determination. It also highlights the importance of quality in penalty shootouts, where Henderson's heroics proved to be the difference between the two sides. As the season begins, both teams will look to build on this experience and continue to challenge for honours. Match Facts Crystal Palace: Henderson, Richards, Lacroix, Guehi (Devenny 90+4), Munoz, Wharton (Lerma 85), Kamada (Hughes 29), Mitchell (Sosa 79), Sarr, Eze, Mateta Goals: Mateta (pen) 17, Sarr 77 Booked: N/A Liverpool: Alisson, Frimpong, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez (Robertson 84), Jones (Endo 71), Szoboszlai, Salah, Wirtz (Elliott 84), Gakpo, Ekitike (Mac Allister 71) Goals: Ekitike 4, Frimpong 21 Booked: Konate, Wirtz, Salah Final Thoughts The FA Community Shield clash between Crystal Palace and Liverpool provided plenty of drama, with both sides showing their attacking intent and resilience. Though Liverpool can be proud of their performance, the penalty loss will certainly sting. For Palace, it's another piece of silverware to add to their growing collection, and a clear indication that their squad is one to watch this season.
