Tottenham midfielder James Maddison to have surgery on ruptured ACL

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — England midfielder James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured ACL, Tottenham said Thursday.
Maddison was injured during Spurs' preseason friendly against Newcastle in Seoul. No timeframe was given for his recovery.
'His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team,' Tottenham said in a statement. 'Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery.'
Recovery from ACL surgery can take between 6-12 months, meaning Maddison is likely to miss the majority of the upcoming season, which starts next week.
It is the latest blow for the 28-year-old Maddison, who missed last season's Europa League final with a knee injury.
'We will be supporting him every step of the way,' Tottenham said.

Clement hits ninth-inning homer as Blue Jays hold on to beat Dodgers 5-4

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani led off the game with his 41st homer, but Ernie Clement hit the tiebreaking homer leading off the ninth inning, and the American League-leading Toronto Blue Jays hung on to avoid a series sweep with a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Mason Fluharty earned his first career save in spectacular fashion after replacing erratic Jays closer Jeff Hoffman in the ninth with the bases loaded and one out. The rookie left-hander struck out Ohtani with a full-count breaking ball before getting Mookie Betts on a game-ending grounder.

West Indies levels series with a 5-wicket victory over Pakistan in the second ODI

TAROUBA, Trinidad and Tobago (AP) — Roston Chase and Justin Greaves led West Indies to a five-wicket victory over Pakistan with 10 balls to spare in the rain-reduced second one-day cricket international on Sunday, leveling the three-match series at 1-1. Chase's 49 not out off 47 balls included two sixes and the winning boundary as West Indies scored 184-5 in 33.2 overs. The hosts were chasing a revised target of 181 runs in 35 overs under the DLS method after multiple rain interruptions saw Pakistan's innings end at 171-7 in 37 overs. Right-arm fast bowler Jayden Seales took 3-23 in seven overs. West Indies stumbled from 101-3 after 18 overs at Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago, to 111-5 off 24 overs, including the wicket of Sherfane Rutherford, who hit a 33-ball 45 with three sixes and six fours. Chase and Greaves (26 off 31) shared a 77-run unbroken partnership for the sixth wicket. West Indies earlier chose to bowl first and Hasan Nawaz again played a key role for Pakistan with 36 not out off 30 deliveries, after his unbeaten 63 in the ODI opener. Hasan's knock on Sunday included three sixes — two of them in what turned out to be the last over of Pakistan's innings after more rain. Hussain Talat got 31 off 32 balls but most Pakistan batters were much slower, including captain Mohammad Rizwan who was trapped lbw by Gudakesh Motie for a 38-ball 16. Pakistan beat West Indies in the first one-day international on Friday, also by five wickets. The third and final match in the ODI series is scheduled for Tuesday at the same stadium. Pakistan won the preceding Twenty20 series 2-1 played in Florida. ___ AP cricket:

Steve Allan wins Boeing Classic for 3rd PGA Tour Champions victory of the season

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (AP) — Steve Allan of Australia won the Boeing Classic on Sunday for his second PGA Tour Champions victory in three starts and third of the season, closing with a birdie for a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke margin over Stewart Cink. Allan made a 5-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge, then waited to see if Cink could catch him. A stroke behind going into the final hole, Cink left a greenside bunker shot on the lip and made a par for a 70. The 51-year-old Allan finished at 15-under 201. He won the The Galleri Classic at Mission Hills in the California desert in March and the Dick's Open last month in Endicott, New York. Ernie Els and Darren Clarke tied for third at 13 under, each shooting 66. Alex Cejka was another stroke back after a 67. Local favorite Fred Couples tied for 47th at 1 over after a 75. From Seattle, the 65-year-old Couples made only his seventh senior start of the season. ___ AP golf:
