Manx artists to dream up Team Isle of Man Commonwealth baton designs
Using the theme of Manx culture and heritage, the preferred design will be selected by a local panel of judges in March 2026 after the closing date for submissions of 13 February.The winning artist will then be invited to apply the design to the baton in time for the visit of the King's Baton Relay to the island ahead of the Glasgow games.Mr Bielich said the association was "excited to be able to offer this opportunity to local creatives".He said "the baton itself is simple and sustainable with no complex electronics or chambers" so the "design potential is broad".
The King's Baton Relay is a games tradition that connects communities across the Commonwealth, reaching the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, the Americas, Oceania and Europe in the countdown to the tournament that takes place every four years.Launched by King Charles at Buckingham Palace in March, the 18th official relay is expected to arrive on Manx shores in the second half of June 2026.All 74 Batons will be then reunited at the opening ceremony of Glasgow 2026.The Australian state of Victoria was originally chosen to stage the multi-sport event in 2026 but withdrew July 2023 stating it could no longer afford to host.The overall number of sports at the Glasgow Games has halved from 20 in Birmingham in 2022 to combat rising hosting costs and time demands.However, more than 200 gold medals will still be contested at venues within an eight-mile corridor of the city.

Minute's silence for Diogo Jota cut short at Wembley before Community Shield
Tributes were paid to former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota before the Community Shield but the minute's silence at Wembley had to be cut short because of some shouting from a small number of Crystal Palace fans. Jota died in a car crash along with his brother André Silva in Spain on 3 July and were honoured with wreaths laid on the pitch and a period of silence before kick-off. The moment was interrupted by a minority of fans from the Palace end, eliciting a strong response at the other end of the pitch, as well as from other Eagles supporters, who tried to silence those not respecting the tribute. Liverpool fans earlier paid respects with a rousing rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone as the wreaths were brought out, raising a white banner reading 'Diogo J' and featuring the forward's image and number 20. Liverpool great Ian Rush, Palace chairman Steve Parish and Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt laid the wreaths at the Liverpool end, as fans from both clubs expressed their respect with a standing ovation as the late siblings' images were displayed on the big screens inside the stadium. Liverpool's manageer, Arne Slot, on Thursday told the FA website he was immensely proud of how his Premier League champions had dealt with the tragedy. He said: 'This summer has been a difficult for everybody connected with the club. The passing of Diogo Jota had a big impact on all of us and is something that we are still coming to terms with. 'We cannot imagine the pain that Diogo's family, his wife, children and friends are going through, and the club will continue to give them all the support they can going forward. Diogo's passing has had a big impact on us all, but what has been so important has been the love and care shown from the football world, and in particular of course the Liverpool FC community. 'I also want to mention the strength and the courage of my players here. They have found themselves in one of the toughest positions imaginable, but the way they have come together and the way they have conducted themselves, on and off the pitch, is a credit to them and to this football club. We really couldn't have asked more of the boys, and I am extremely proud of them all. 'We will always carry Diogo with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go.'

Focus and effort are needed to make it A hard-fought but well-earned three points. Macaulay Tait was outstanding and Samson Lawal at right back was a surprise selection but came on in the game. Jeremy Bokila looks as though he will be a useful addition. Matt: We couldn't have really asked for a better start to the return to the Premiership. Martindale has so far been good to his word that he's abandoned the long ball game of old and kept trying to play possession-based, passing football. It makes for a much more enjoyable Saturday afternoon, if nothing else! The squad looks balanced, technically sound and more than capable of doing well this season. Falkirk were a distant second across the park, and we were very good value for the win. Long may this continue.
