The discussion centres on two assumptions -- whether the day can be counted from August 15, 1947, the day India gained independence, or from the day it celebrated its first anniversary one year later.
India will be commemorating its 79th anniversary of gaining independence if we count from the day of independence. However, if we calculate from August 15, 1948, it is the 78th Independence Day.
According to the official channels, it is indeed confirmed that India will be celebrating its 79th Independence Day. A letter by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), carried by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), has corroborated that the country will be celebrating its 79th Independence Day.
"As India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today extended an invitation to all citizens to contribute their thoughts and ideas for his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15," the letter stated.

India, Philippines elevate ties to strategic partnership; focus on defence, Indo-Pacific
New Delhi, Aug 5 (UNI) India and the Philippines elevated their bilateral relationship to a "strategic partnership" following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. The move marks a significant upgrade in ties as the two nations seek to deepen cooperation across defence, trade, and the Indo-Pacific region. Addressing the media after delegation-level talks, Prime Minister Modi said, 'Dialogue at every level and cooperation in every sector have long defined our relations. Today, we held extensive discussions on mutual cooperation, regional issues, and the global situation. I am pleased to announce that we have agreed to elevate our ties to a strategic partnership.' Modi said a comprehensive action plan has been formulated to translate the potential of this new partnership into tangible results. 'Our bilateral trade continues to grow and has crossed USD 3 billion. To strengthen this further, we will prioritise the early completion of the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement review and move towards a bilateral Preferential Trade Agreement,' he said. 'The Philippines is a key partner in India's Act East Policy and SAGAR vision (Security and Growth for All in the Region). We are committed to peace, security, prosperity, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. We support freedom of navigation in accordance with international law,' he said, highlighting India's broader East Asia policy. Highlighting the finalisation of the science and technology cooperation plan, PM Modi said, 'Indian companies are working in sectors such as information and digital technology, healthcare, automobiles, infrastructure, and minerals. In science and technology, joint research is underway — from virology to AI and additive manufacturing.' The regional centre of the International Rice Research Institute in Varanasi is working on ultra-low glycemic index rice. 'In other words, we are working together on both taste and health. I am happy to share that, under our Development Partnership, we will increase the number of Quick Impact Projects in the Philippines and support the development of sovereign data cloud infrastructure there,' Modi said. 'Our partnership on Earth is already strong — and now, we are preparing to collaborate in space as well. An agreement for this was signed today,' he added. The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to peace, security, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific. 'India and the Philippines are friends by choice and partners by destiny. We are committed to freedom of navigation in accordance with international law,' Modi said, while also thanking the Philippine government for condemning the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and expressing solidarity with India. 'Our growing defence ties are a sign of deep mutual trust. As maritime nations, maritime cooperation between our countries is both natural and necessary. We have worked together in humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and search and rescue operations. Today, while the President is in India, three Indian Navy ships are, for the first time, participating in a naval exercise in the Philippines. India's hydrography ship is also taking part,' Modi noted. 'We welcome Philippines' participation in the International Fusion Center set up by India for the Indian Ocean Region. He highlighted the two countries' shared interest in ensuring safe navigation and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, and reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to a free, open, and rules-based regional order. 'We both have high stakes in the Indo-Pacific. As the incoming Chair of ASEAN, I thank Prime Minister Modi for his strong support,' President Marcos said. Rajasthan royal family descendants fume over map in NCERT Class 8 book, say Rajputana never part of Maratha Empire
Kolhapur: The depiction of Jaisalmer as part of the Maratha Empire in the map featured in the NCERT's social science Class 8 textbook has been criticised as historically misleading and factually baseless. Chaitanya Raj Singh, the head of Jaisalmer's former royal family, took to his X account to tag Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, urging him to "correct" the "erroneous, malicious, and agenda-driven content" without delay. The objection pertains to the map on Page 71 of Unit 3 "Rise of Marathas" published in the textbook "Exploring Society: India and Beyond". Prior to Chaitanya Raj Singh's objection, Bhupesh Singh, the head of the former royal family of Rajasthan's Bundi, had also expressed concerns on his verified X account. He contested the portrayal of Rajput princely states as part of the Maratha empire and went as far as declaring the Maratha Empire a fictitious entity. "In the context of the Jaisalmer princely state, no authentic historical sources mention any Maratha dominance, invasion, taxation, or authority. Although Jaisalmer is not explicitly mentioned, the map's expanse includes Rajput princely states, showing the Maratha reach from Peshawar to Cuttack. Indrajit Sawant, a Kolhapur based historian, said, "Rajputana came under the influence of the Marathas after the Marathas started domination over the Mughal Badshah. Marathas used to run the Mughal empire and the Rajput states came under it. The Rajputs were the jaghirdars of the Mughals. They were made to mandatorily pay the taxes. Though the Marathas didn't have day-to-day control over the Rajput states, there were deployments to ensure the terms were followed. " Balkawade also pointed to the 'Ahadnama', a pact between Mughal Badshah Ahmad Shah Bahadur and Maratha warriors Malharao Holkar and Mahadji Shinde for Peshwa Nanasaheb in April 1752, as evidence of Maratha authority over Rajput states. "There are multiple sources and documents that provide a detailed description of the 'Ahadnama', the pact signed between Safdar Jung on behalf of the Mughal emperor and Shinde-Holkar on behalf of the Peshwa at Kannauj. The wazir of the Badshah went to Kannauj, where Shinde-Holkar were planning to go south. He brought the message of the Badshah that Ahmed Shah Abdali was marching towards Delhi, and he wanted the Marathas to protect the Badshah and his empire. As per the pact, the Marathas had to protect the emperor from internal enemies like the Pathans, Rajputs, or other rebels and external foes like Afghan king Abdali. The Marathas were given Rs 50 lakh for the same. The Peshwa was given the right to levy chauth from Punjab, Sindh, and Doab, and the Peshwa was also granted viceroyalty of Agra and Ajmer," Balkawade explained. He further detailed that records from the Peshwa administration indicate regular collection of chauth from regions including Ajmer (Mewar), with one document showing Rs 13 lakh collected as tax. Other areas from which chauth was collected include Delhi, Agra, Ujjain (Malwa), and Odisha. Following the Badshah's death, Mahadji Shinde installed Shah Alam, who had been held for six years in the Allahabad fort, on the throne in 1771, becoming Naib Vakil-i-Mutaliq, the deputy regent of the empire. Balkawade also pointed to the disputes within the royal families of Jodhpur and Jaipur regarding succession. "The Marathas adjudicated in both post-1752, and in Jodhpur, Bijaysingh ascended the throne, and in Jaipur, Madhavsingh ascended the throne. Both the new rulers joined the Maratha Empire. This should not sound against Rajputs; Marathas fought against alien invasion to protect everyone, which led to the unification of Hindustan.
