Lulu Roman dead: Hee Haw star who called herself 'the fat girl' dies as son pays tribute
Comedian and gospel singer Lulu Roman has died at the age of 78, her son has confirmed. The star of Hee Haw died seven months after moving to Washington to be with her son. No cause of death has been determined.
Her publicist Ben Laurro shared a brief statement to confirm the sad news. It read: "Lulu Roman was unsung. She endured much adversity in her life that helped her become a joy to others."
Lulu had starred on CBS show Hee Haw for a number of decades, appearing on over 150 episodes between 1969 and 1992. She previously claimed that she had been "hired to be the fat girl".
She said in an interview with News Channel 5 in 2024: "They needed one boy next door, one fat dumb man, one fat dumb woman. Buck [Owens] said, "I got your girl! She's in Dallas!"'
During her time on the show, Lulu reinvented herself as a gospel singer. She would later go on to release over a dozen albums while also performing regularly in concert. Among those she recorded with included Dolly Parton.
Speaking to The 700 Club in 2010 she revealed how she lost 200 pounds after the show had ended.

Other Hollywood names included in the telecast included George Clooney making his Broadway debut and 'Succession' star Sarah Snook being named best leading actress in a play for 'The Picture of Dorian Gray,' a one-woman show.

"Bearing in mind we've got the Champions League final on the Saturday night and I've been hanging for weeks before that as well. Imagine us at the Beeb throwing a party the night before, say, the FA Cup final or the World Cup final. "It would never, ever happen. CBS just embrace it. I got there thinking it's just a CBS party. I get there, the big massive flyer says: 'Big Meeks' Party.' It was madness." While cultural differences would likely prevent the BBC from allowing its staff to indulge in such revelries and borderline unprofessionalism, CBS' Champions League final broadcast went off without a hitch. Richards appeared alongside presenter Kate Scott and fellow ex-pros Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher. Actor Tom Cruise and David Beckham were also part of the build-up to the kick-off in Munich. Yet, Richards' path to the German capital was not without its tribulations, and he detailed that a fear of flying made for an awkward journey. "For those who don't know, I don't like flying. So, me, the absolute idiot, decides to look at a route from Harrogate all the way to Munich," he continued. "I thought, 'Ok, if I get to London, it's not gonna be too bad.' So I get to London, which is three hours door to door. "Then I went to get the train from London, and it was supposed to go to Brussels. It got cancelled, so now I'm sweating, thinking what I could possibly do! I'm scrambling on my apps. "I went from London to Paris, then I had to wait a couple of hours. Paris to Stuttgart. Had to wait a couple hours, then Stuttgart to Munich, and when I got there, I was absolutely exhausted."

Cynthia Erivo shines as host in star-studded 2025 Tony Awards
Wicked star Cynthia Erivo led a star-studded night at the 2025 Tony Awards. Criss, the show's lead actor, thanked his wife in an emotional acceptance speech. 'Your love and your support for me and our beautiful children, combined with the miracle of working on something as magical as Maybe Happy Ending, has been and will always be award enough,' he said. Purpose, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' drawing-room drama won best new play, while Sam Pinkleton won best director of a play for Oh, Mary! 'Broadway is officially back,' Erivo told the crowd during the show, referencing the industry's highest-grossing season on record. Delighting the audience, the original cast of Hamilton reunited to perform a medley to celebrate the show's 10th anniversary. Francis Jue, who won as best featured actor in a play for Yellow Face, paid tribute to those struggling in the current political climate. 'To those who don't feel seen, to those who are being targeted in these authoritarian times, I see you at its best,' he said. 'This community sees you.'
