Automotive Business Council announces Gqeberha as host of 2025 SA Auto Week
Both the major automotive manufacturing showcases in the country, the Automotive Business Council's Auto Week and the Naacam Show 2025, hosted by the country's components industry, will be held in Nelson Mandela Bay this year, for the first time in history.
The Automotive Business Council (Naamsa) announced on Monday that it was 'going back to their roots' and will hold its premier event, Auto Week 2025, in Gqeberha, Nelson Mandela Bay.
The metro houses the biggest automotive manufacturing sector in South Africa and Gqeberha is the city where Naamsa was founded. It is home to almost half of the country's auto manufacturing and components sector.
The event will be held in partnership with the Eastern Cape Provincial Government.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane said, 'We are ecstatic to form a partnership with Naamsa to host this lucrative event in our province, specifically in Gqeberha, a city that embodies our rich automotive heritage.
'As a province which hosts some of the biggest Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), with a 38% contribution to the country's vehicle production, this opportunity is critical in fostering partnerships that will bring the much-needed investment into our provincial economy.'
Founded in 1935 in Port Elizabeth, now known as Gqeberha, Auto Week 2025 will take place at the Coega Vulindlela Accommodation and Conference Centre, a premier facility owned and operated by the Coega Development Corporation.
Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa said, 'It is profoundly symbolic that the SA Auto Week 2025 takes place in the city where Naamsa's journey began. This historic city, now a model for reindustrialisation, will convene all of us in October to map the next chapter of African automotive excellence. It is our strongest conviction that the automotive industry will change faster in the next decade than it has in the last century and that a strong foundation for change will be laid in Gqeberha.'
Coega Development Corporation CEO Themba Koza said this was a milestone for the Coega Special Economic Zone. Automotive Manufacturer Stellantis is building its new R3-billion factory in the Coega Special Economic Zone.
'Bringing SA Auto Week to Coega is more than just an event, it's a powerful endorsement of what's possible when visionary leadership, enabling policy, and industrial capability align. We are proud to host global automotive leaders and stakeholders at our world-class Special Economic Zone. This is a moment of pride for the Eastern Cape and a catalyst for future growth,' Koza added.
The Coega Special Economic Zone houses several leading global manufacturers such as BAIC and FAW Trucks, alongside component suppliers including Grupo Antolin, Faurecia, Hella, Rehau and Schnellecke Automotive.
The theme for Auto Week will be, 'Reimagining the Future, Together: Cultivating Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity'.
Auto Week 2025 will happen hot on the heels of the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers' Naacam Show that will be held at the Boardwalk International Conference Centre in August.
Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber CEO Denise van Huyssteen said the chamber was excited about the holding of both showcases in Nelson Mandela Bay this year.
She said the decision to host the events in the Bay reinforced the importance of the metro as an automotive manufacturing hub on the African continent.
'This is the first time in the history of our metro that both of these major automotive events are taking place here in the same year,' Van Huyssteen said.
'The fact that both of these events are being held here underscores the depth of the automotive ecosystem which is based in the Bay, which encompasses a wide range of automotive components right through to the assembly of passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and trucks,' she said. DM

Mashatile warns of economic repercussions if trade dispute with US is not resolved
Deputy President Paul Mashatile warns of job losses in the automotive sector if South Africa fails to resolve trade tensions with the US, urging urgent economic diplomacy and industry collaboration. Deputy President Paul Mashatile has warned of serious economic repercussions across South Africa's automotive value chain if an amicable trade agreement is not reached with the United States. Speaking at the opening of the P20 Women's Parliament in Cape Town on Thursday, Mashatile said that the imposition of a 30% tariff on South African automotive exports to the US threatens to disrupt established trade flows, undermine competitiveness, and put thousands of jobs at risk. 'We must highlight that there will be repercussions felt throughout the entire value chain if we do not reach an amicable trade agreement with the White House,' Mashatile said. He noted that South African suppliers supporting domestic original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that export to the US would likely face production cutbacks, putting pressure on planning, employment, and investment. 'Because of this, they would be unable to compete with goods from nations that have continued preferential or zero-duty access, such as those in the USMCA,' he said. Mashatile's comments come at a time when South Africa holds the G20 Presidency under the theme of 'Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.'

Nelson Mandela Bay civil society group calls for conference to avert economic crisis in metro
The Civil Society Coalition of Nelson Mandela Bay has urged Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane and the presidency to urgently organise a rescue conference to discuss how an economic collapse can be averted in the metro. This follows the imminent closure of the Goodyear plant in Kariega, US tariffs that threaten the industrial economy, and political instability at City Hall which has led to chronic service delivery failures. On Monday, the coalition stated that a new social compact was needed to consolidate the input generated by civil society, which would be binding across all levels of government. 'We need a proactive economic and industrialisation strategy that broadens the value chains that underpin our economy and builds on the metro's existing human and natural assets. 'This metro cannot afford to lose another industrial anchor, more so that we are already advised of others that are in line to potentially close,' the statement said. According to the coalition, the US tariffs pose a danger to the industrial economy of the Bay and have placed thousands of jobs at risk. The new 30% tariff rate kicked in August after a trade deal could not be reached. 'The tariffs will also serve to have a domino effect on other industries, as we seek new markets in competition with other countries similarly impacted. 'Any disruption to trade relations with the US will have a devastating ripple effect across supply chains, communities and households already battling high levels of poverty and unemployment.' It said the impact of the closure of Goodyear stretched far beyond the employees of the plant, but would affect small businesses and surrounding sectors. 'This signals a deepening social and economic crisis,' the statement said. Goodyear announced in June that 907 jobs were on the line when it winds down its manufacturing operations in the country. The group has also hit out against political governance in the city. 'The direct consequence of the misgovernance and mismanagement on the political and economic front, social depravation and decline , specifically in the form of murder, syndicated theft of infrastructure, substance abuse, interpersonal abuse, and neighbourhood gangs, plague the people of our metro. 'We are counted among the top-ranking murder cities in the world. 'It is a crisis our leadership seem to blind themselves to and we call for a sense of urgency among the non-state formations, working with a willing government at all levels,' the coalition said. It has called on the government to take the necessary action to enable a sustainable economy by securing a low-carbon and stable electricity supply to the metro. This, they said, could be done by bringing in industrial and trade policy certainty for green hydrogen, electric vehicles, grid supply, wheeling of renewable energy, manganese exportation and beneficiation of raw minerals. Other suggestions included leveraging the national public employment programmes to aid cleanup, tourism and community safety, and returning the ports to optimal functionality. The Herald
