‘Kuki is not an ethnic identity': Thadou tribe leaders meet Meitei groups in historic step towards peace
The Meitei groups present included the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, All Manipur United Clubs Organisation, Federation of Civil Society Organisations and Arambai Tenggol. The meeting also saw the participation of student and women leaders.
Although the details of the meeting were not made public, sources said the discussions allegedly centred on efforts to restore peace, rebuild inter-community relationships, and eliminate mistrust between the groups.
The meeting is being seen as a major step toward reconciliation in the wake of a violent ethnic conflict between the Meiteis and tribal Kukis that has, since May 2023, allegedly claimed more than 250 lives and displaced around 60,000 people internally.
The Thadous, who were also affected by the conflict, used the opportunity to clarify their identity. The Thadou Inpi Manipur, in a statement issued after the meeting, said the discussions were part of a 'community understanding programme' between both sides.
The statement added that the Thadous, long considered part of the larger Kuki umbrella, are in fact a 'distinct indigenous identity.'

Imphal: The top umbrella body of Meitei civil society organisations from across the globe has called for frequent meetings of all communities in Manipur to bring understanding, peace and rule of law. The Meitei Alliance in a statement on Friday said the first meeting of Meitei civil society organisations and a delegation of the indigenous distinct Thadou tribe in the state capital Imphal "serves as a meaningful model for inclusive dialogue, accountability, and rule of law." Thadou body claims leaders detained at Imphal hotel; Manipur cops deny
IMPHAL: Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM), an apex body of the Thadou community in the state, on Thursday claimed that several leaders had been detained at an Imphal hotel where they had held a peace meeting with Meitei civil society organisations the previous day. Police said the TIM delegates were not detained or placed under house arrest (HT Photo) A senior police officer rejected the allegation, insisting that security personnel had been deployed at the hostel for the safety of TIM delegates. 'There is no detention or house arrest of the TIM delegates, the police personnel and central forces are deployed for safety reasons, considering the present unrest as the government cannot take a risk,' a senior police officer said The Thadou delegation was part of a 16-member team that had travelled to Imphal for the peace dialogue. TIM president James Thadou said, 'The arrest and forced confinement of peaceful delegates is a clear violation of their democratic rights and liberty. It is a blatant attempt to suppress dissent and appease extremist forces in the valley.' In a statement on Wednesday, TIM said the 'Thadou' community had been long considered part of the larger Kuki umbrella, but were in fact a 'distinct indigenous identity'. 'The term Kuki has foreign origins, and those who adopt it today often do so to push a separatist and extremist ideology. Many who currently identify as Kuki are suspected illegal immigrants, having settled in Manipur in recent decades,' Thadou said James said they came to Imphal after the May 3 incident, despite pressure from many groups, to initiate a peace process and restore peace. The TIM urged the government to take immediate action. Thadou Tribe, Meiteis, Other Communities Share Stage In Imphal For Peace
Imphal: Delegations of the Thadou tribe and civil society organisations including from the Meitei community met in Manipur's capital Imphal on Wednesday in a significant step at demonstrating the resilience of the common people in overcoming hate and misunderstanding, the attendees told reporters. After landing at Imphal airport, members of the Thadou tribe delegation drove to the venue in the heart of Imphal city, where people from the Meitei community and others welcomed them. The stillness of the venue disappeared as the greetings and handshakes began. The bold step taken by the delegation of the Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM), a key body of the indigenous distinct Thadou tribe, received goodwill and support from many communities, a leader of the delegation said. Many in the security establishment also viewed the meeting positively, sources said. Members of the Meitei organisations said the Imphal meeting marked the first time in over two years when multi-ethnic delegations shared a stage in the capital city and agreed on the need to remove misunderstandings and work toward equity for all communities of the border state. "We hope today's meeting will encourage all indigenous distinct tribes and communities to take a similar stand and safeguard Manipur's democratic and multi-ethnic identity," a member of the Meitei delegation said. All are hopeful some kind of concrete steps will be taken for the benefit of all indigenous communities as the delegates begin meeting more often. Members of the Thadou tribe delegation said there are many smaller distinct tribes in the state that believe in peaceful co-existence, but they have been unable to break free from the firm hold of a few armed troublemakers who want only political power and amassing wealth. "A major source of confusion between the Thadou tribe and those identifying as Kuki tribes arises from the similarities in attire and cultural expressions. However, it is crucial to understand that Thadou tribe is a distinct indigenous identity, while the Kuki nomenclature, as used today, has become a politicised and ideological label. The nomenclature Kuki is not a genuine ethnic identity," the Thadou Inpi Manipur said in a statement after the meeting. "We must not mistake external appearances for identity. Wearing similar attire does not equate to being the same people. The appropriation of Thadou culture by Kuki-identifying groups is misleading and harmful," the Thadou Inpi Manipur said. "... So, this issue must be addressed thoughtfully, lawfully, and patiently for the greater good of Manipur," it said.
