Power cut strands 30,000 at Japan's Osaka expo, sparks calls for better crisis planning

World Exposition in Osaka were left stranded, with some forced to spend the night inside the expo grounds, after the sole train service to the venue had to be halted due to a power outage on Wednesday.
Services on the Chuo Line, the only direct route to Yumeshima, the artificial island that hosts the expo, were halted at 9.30pm – 30 minutes before closing time – because of an electrical failure, Kyodo news agency reported.
While the Osaka Metro partially restored the service before midnight, Yumeshima was so overwhelmed with people trying to leave via the station that entry was temporarily restricted, according to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.
Visitors were encouraged to use other public transport or stay inside the venue.

One man from Saitama prefecture ended up waiting for a taxi after not being able to catch the train at the station. 'We were packed in like sardines,' he told the Asahi Shimbun, adding that it was so hot that some people fainted. 'Visitors need more information. There is no crisis management at all.'

India warns citizens against job scammers exploiting Malaysia visa-free scheme
The High Commission of India has cautioned its citizens against unscrupulous parties duping them with claims of employment opportunities in Malaysia under the 30-day visa-free entry scheme. In a travel advisory, the high commission said it recently became aware that crooked visa and employment agents are misleading Indian nationals into believing they could take advantage of the visa waiver to seek jobs in Malaysia. It reminded its nationals that the visa-free scheme is not for employment. The advisory also raised concerns over instances of its citizens being denied entry upon arrival at Malaysian airports after failing to meet the terms and conditions required by the Malaysian Immigration Department. It stated that, in addition to suspicions of seeking employment, other factors leading to affected travellers being categorised under 'Not to Land' (NTL) included insufficient funds for their visit, inadequate proof of accommodation, absence of return tickets and various other violations. The high commission said that upon issuance of the NTL notice, passengers are required to remain within an airport building until they are repatriated by the airline they had travelled on earlier.

Hong Kong taxis need to shift gear so that every cab is ‘premium'
Hong Kong's taxi industry is being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Moves to legitimise and regulate ride-hailing firms while improving services offered by cabbies are long overdue. But members of the influential taxi trade continue to push for privileges and block the path to progress. The government must take the handbrake off – and accelerate. Officials have had to go to extraordinary lengths to modernise the industry and lift standards. Taxis are to be required to offer at least two forms of digital payment and install cameras and devices to record their trips. There is a new disciplinary system and fleets of new 'premium' taxis have hit the streets. None of this should have been necessary. The taxi industry should have eagerly embraced technology and offered excellent service. That is the best way of competing with popular ride-hailing firms. The most important requirement is to guarantee passenger safety. The death of a tourist from the Philippines this month, knocked down by a 'dizzy' 80-year-old taxi driver, has renewed long-standing concerns about the roadworthiness of elderly cabbies.
