Losing Ami a wound that will never fully heal, says father

JOHOR BARU: One year ago today, Azhar Khaiden's life changed forever when a man launched a brutal attack on the Ulu Tiram police station, killing two constables.
Azhar, 55, and his wife lost their fourth child, Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar. His seven siblings lost a beloved brother.
"Ever since he left us, we have missed him deeply," he said.
Azza, fondly called Ami by the family, fellow constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, and Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan, 38, were on duty at the station in the early hours of May 17, last year, when the incident occurred.
Azhar said not a day goes by without the family thinking of their "kind and dedicated" Azza.
He said Azza was proud to be a policeman and even helped repaint the station and carried out electrical repairs in his own time.
"He treated the station like his home. He just wanted it to look nice," said Azhar, a retired teacher.
He also recalled how his son helped with home improvement work, including wiring and painting, especially during Hari Raya.
"He was always by my side," he said, reflecting on the happy days with his son.
Though the pain of the loss remains, the family found some solace in the naming of a surau built near their hometown in Bidor, Perak, Surau Al-Fahmi, which was named after Azza.
"It was our dream to have a new surau for our kampung. We never thought it would happen only after his passing," said Azhar of the surau, which opened in February.
Tonight, the family will host a tahlil ceremony to mark the first anniversary of Azza's death.
Azhar said his daughter, Nur Azza Assyaadah, 20, hopes to follow in her brother's footsteps and has already completed several stages of police recruitment.
"I've told my children, death can come anywhere, anytime. But service to the nation must continue."
Another son, he added, is also serving as a traffic policeman in Perak.

‘I don't have daughter named Dayana Balqis'

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: Azhar lodged a report against social media claims linking his daughter to the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir. Kota Kinabalu: Darau Assemblyman Azhar bin Datuk Matussin lodged a report against social media claims linking his daughter to the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir. 'I do not have a daughter named Dayana Balqis, also known as Dedeng. Furthermore, I have never sent my daughter to study at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha. 'The birth certificate displayed in the post does not belong to my daughter. All the details are false. They were fabricated and can be verified at any National Registration Department branch,' he said in his Facebook page, Tuesday. The former State Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry lodged the report to call on the authorities to act against those responsible for creating and spreading the false claims, including individuals who shared the content on other online platforms. He also filed a Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) report the same day over the post, which appeared on the Facebook page under the name of 'Forum Politik Sabah Suara Anak Sabah, Ini Sabah Bah (ISB)'. He said legal advisers have recommended him to pursue the case in court. Although the post has since been deleted, Azhar said the damage had been done and stressed that the safety of his daughter was now at risk. 'We know that the majority of Malaysians are currently outraged at the bullies and killers involved in the case.' Meanwhile, a family member of a former SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha student also lodged a report in Lahad Datu on Aug 8 over defamatory claims linking their daughter to the case of Zara. Muhd Yassin said his 16-year-old daughter had already transferred to Kolej Vokasional Lahad Datu (KVLD) in early 2025. 'My daughter studied at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in 2022 (Form 1) to 2024 (Form 3) and transferred to KVLD early this year. 'The incident involving Almarhumah Zara Qairina occurred when my daughter was no longer studied at the school. 'But her photo was shared in a video that was uploaded by an account on Tik Tok saying she was the murderer of Zara. The video garnered more than 10,000 views and full of negative comments towards our daughter and family,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Death of teen: Cop not handcuffed leaving court as he had posted bail

GURUN: Images of a police corporal leaving court not handcuffed after being charged with causing the death of a teenager by dangerous driving have gone viral, sparking public outrage over perceived preferential treatment. However, according to court records, 52-year-old Azhar Mat Sani had already posted bail of RM6,000 when he left the magistrate's court here today and entered a police vehicle. He had been seen entering the vehicle without restraints, despite facing a charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years. Under standard procedure, once bail is posted, an accused is not required to be restrained. It is understood that he had arrived at the court complex earlier in the morning in his own vehicle, before any members of the media were present. He was later seen leaving in a police vehicle. Azhar had pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of 16-year-old motorcyclist Muhammad Nor Iman Danial Mohd Roshidi. The case has been fixed for mention on Sept 29.

Cop denies dangerous driving charge over teen's death

GURUN: A policeman has claimed trial to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving after a crash in Guar Chempedak. Azhar Mat Saini, 52, a corporal, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Anis Suraya Ahmad at the Magistrate's Court here. According to the charge sheet, Azhar was alleged to have driven in a manner dangerous to the public at about 9pm on July 28 at a traffic light intersection in Guar Chempedak town. The crash caused the death of 16-year-old motorcyclist Muhammad Nur Iman Danial Mohd Roshidi. The offence is framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, which provides for an imprisonment term of between five and 10 years and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000 upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nik Nurhazirah Tuan Yahya appeared for the prosecution, while Azhar was represented by lawyer S. Parameswaran. Nik Nurhazirah requested bail to be set at RM13,000, but Parameswaran appealed for a lower amount. He said the accused is supporting a wife who is a school teacher and four children aged between 11 and 18, including one with a disability. The court allowed bail at RM6,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 29 for mention. Azhar's driving licenses were also suspended. The victim's parents, Mohd Roshidi Alias and Norliza Salleh, both 44, were at the courthouse with other family members. Roshidi said the family hopes for a just and fair trial.
