Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton begins rehab assignment
June 10 - Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Somerset, putting him one step closer to his 2025 debut for New York.
The five-time All-Star and former National League MVP has been sidelined all season with injuries to both elbows.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed last week that Stanton, 35, was making progress.
"He's probably headed up here, but I don't know the next step if it's a rehab assignment or what," Boone said last Thursday.
Stanton went on the 10-day injured list in late March and was transferred to the 60-day IL in May due to right and left elbow epicondylitis, an issue last season that resurfaced before spring training.
Playing exclusively at designated hitter last season, Stanton batted .233 with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs in 114 games. In seven seasons with the Yankees, he has belted 162 homers and driven in 431 runs while hitting .241.
Calf, hamstring, Achilles and elbow issues have been a roadblock to Stanton's availability. He has averaged just 94.7 games per season since joining New York, playing more than 115 games just twice -- most recently in 2021 when he played 139 games.

USGA chief insists the 'juice is not worth the squeeze' of changing equipment testing despite Rory McIlroy driver debacle
The Rory McIlroy driver debacle will not lead to a change in equipment testing, according to the United States Golf Association. The USGA, which carries out the pre-tournament checks, had faced calls from Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele to overhaul their procedures last month. Scheffler and McIlroy were both forced to change a non-conforming driver in the build up to the championship, after each was found to have become too springy, and the world No 1 went on to argue against the current method of randomly selecting only a third of each field for testing. Scheffler's view was that the entire field should have their equipment checked if the measure was to be considered fair. However, USGA chief Mike Whan, whose organisation is running this week's US Open, has dismissed that possibility, saying that the nature of any advantage and the prevalence of failures were both too small to justify. 'With what we're seeing today, it would be a greater interruption,' Whan said. 'The juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze.' He added: 'If I'm being honest with you, I think in terms of what happened at the PGA Championship, it made us more committed to not wanting to have this be the topic of the town because I think when you talked about a rules violation or somebody who's playing with a hot driver, that gets so much more sensational than the reality. 'I can tell you as a rules body, if we had concern about this incredible advantage, we would change the degree in which we test. 'But we think the testing that we're doing now is commensurate with the size of both the issue and the size of the reality of the issue. 'I know we tested this week. I couldn't tell you if we had failures, and if so, what those failures were at the time. 'I know that if we saw a trend that was alarming in terms of either how many or how far they were moving beyond (the permissible limit), we would change the way we approach it.'

LSU basketball star Flau'jae Johnson has revealed she is no longer friends with former teammate Angel Reese because of a 'locker room' dispute between the pair. Johnson and Reese formed a successful partnership on the court together at LSU, which helped the school win a national championship in 2023, before the latter left college and moved up to the WNBA a year later. At the end of her rookie season in the big leagues, the Chicago Sky forward admitted she is no longer as close with her old Tigers teammate despite there being 'no hard feelings between them.' 'I still support Flau'jae. We aren't as close as we used to be,' Reese said on her Unapologetically Angel podcast. 'There's no hard feelings or anything. 'It happens,' she continued. 'You don't have the best relationships with everybody, and don't always continue relationships with people. So I wish her the best always, I'm always going to support her. There's no love lost but we aren't as close as we used to be.' Yet nine months on from that claim, Johnson has suggested their lack of closeness these days is actually due to something that played out behind the scenes at LSU. 'We're not friends, but I mean that bond that we had, that thing that we did together, winning a national championship, you can never take that away from us,' she said on The Breakfast Club. 'And so sometimes stuff happens, you wish it don't happen but it do. And you just gotta grow.' When asked specifically what happened, the 21-year-old continued: 'Yeah, it was a lot of media, it was a lot of locker room stuff. You know what I'm saying? Stuff that go on behind the scenes. Back in 2023, Reese's mother, Angel Webb Reese, and Johnson's mother, Kia Brooks, seemed to feud on social media after the former was briefly removed from LSU's lineup. Webb first posted on Instagram: 'Folks pls do not send me long text msgs with a bunch of grammatical errors it gives me a headache, how do I know you said what you said if I can't understand what you're saying?' Brooks seemed to take that message as a shot at her, before going on the offensive against Webb and her daughter. 'You definitely know about grammar errors when your daughter got a 2.0 or less GPA, and in fact when writing your smart message you didn't capitalize nor did you use any periods,' she said. 'Stop being petty, fake and hateful. And take responsibility for you and your daughters actions. Your just as responsible you raised her that way. Nobody give a damn who you think you are since you came up off another's brand. Just like God gave it to you he will take right away. Always stay humble and never forget who made you and where you came from!!' Reese then continued to stoke the fire after graduating from LSU the following year. 'So now what? what was said? oh okay that's what i thought. I graduated from THE LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY IN 4 YEARS ON TIME. I thought somebody without a college degree said sum,' she wrote on X. She also shared a message from her mother on social media, in which Webb said she had a college degree and railed against 'folks who... have not sniffed a GPA since high school,' in an apparent reference to Brooks.

FIFA Club World Cup will be guarded by 'suited and booted' ICE and DHS agents, officials have warned. The mammoth event's opening ceremony takes place at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday. 4 4 4 The countdown is officially on until the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off, with a curtain-raiser between Inter Miami and a team from Egypt, Al Ahly. The Department of Homeland Security has revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel will provide security at the game. On its Facebook account, CBP posted last week: 'Let the games begin. "The first #FIFAClubWorldCup games start on June 14th in Miami, FL at the Hard Rock Stadium. "CBP will be suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games. #CBPxFIFA #FootballUnitesTheWorld.' The post has since been deleted. However, NBC said the post had prompted questions about whether the presence of federal agents was "just part of the overall security team, which is normal for a big event?" This follows demonstrations nationwide, including Dallas and Austin in Texas, and Chicago and New York, after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. He replied, 'No I don't have any concerns on anything in the sense that we are very attentive on any security questions. "Most important for us is to guarantee security for our fans who will come to the games, this is our priority.' The station stressed that it is normal for local police to partner with federal counterparts and law enforcement agents to provide security at big events. The broadcaster said it had spoken to ICE agents - who had confirmed its officials will be at the games - to provide security. NBC - citing ICE advice - told viewers intending on attending games that all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status. This is particularly vital after the debacle last year, when 7,000 unticketed supporters broke into the Copa America final. "It's sort of alluding that people should have their paperwork in order to attend the games. 'It creates an environment where people are less likely to come watch the games because of just sheer intimidation.' When asked about the security arrangement, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, 'We're here to make sure people are safe, that's our focus, to work with all of the law enforcement personnel, our safety personnel, and make sure they have a seamless experience." 4
