MUMBAI: A 65-year-old businessman from Powai lost ₹52 lakh after an allegedly Japanese woman he befriended online convinced him to invest in Bitcoins and duped him in a cybercrime fraud for a month. The West Cyber police had initially received his complaint, and as the defrauded amount was less than ₹1 crore, they forwarded it to the Andheri police station, which registered a case against the woman and her accomplices on Saturday. From the last week of June to July 17, the victim invested ₹ 52 lakh.(HT File Photo) According to the complaint, the businessman received a Facebook friend request from an unknown person in June. The profile had a woman's photo and displayed her employment with IBM in Hong Kong. Believing it to be genuine, the complainant accepted her request, and the two began communicating through the messenger app. Also Read | Senior citizen loses ₹21 lakh to gaming fraud During their conversation, the accused asked for his mobile number, and the two began to speak with each other on the phone. Her soft-spoken manner on calls gained the complainant's trust, he said in the complaint. She told him she was currently working in an IBM office based in Hong Kong and that she would soon be joining the IBM Crypto trading platform in Japan as a manager. The complainant continued to talk with her for 10 more days about various subjects. She would tell him how investing in Bitcoin reaps huge profits and how it could benefit him. Though the complainant was initially reluctant, he was eventually convinced. He said he began investing money in Bitcoins through the bank accounts she provided. From the last week of June to July 17, he had invested ₹52 lakh. When he checked the application, it displayed ₹10.3 crore as his virtual bank account balance. Noticing huge returns, the 65-year-old wanted to, but could not invest more money in Bitcoins. So, he decided to withdraw the balance accumulated in his account. When he inquired about the withdrawal process, he was asked to pay a 30% tax first. Finding this suspicious, he discussed it with his relatives and realised he had been defrauded. The Andheri police on Saturday registered a case under sections 66 (d) (dishonestly receiving stolen computer resource or communication device) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and sections 318 (4) (cheating), 319 (2) (cheating by personation), 336 (2) and 336 (3) (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable security documents), 340 (2) (using forged electronic document as genuine) and 61 (2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. 'We are trying to ascertain the identities of and trace the accused through the transactions made by the complainant,' said a police officer from Andheri police station.

Chennai: Learning a foreign language, life skills, and industry-oriented courses are mandatory for all BE and BTech students who are going to join engineering colleges this year in the state. Anna University 's academic council on Monday approved academic regulations 2025 for BE and BTech programmes offered in around 300 affiliated colleges. According to the new regulations, students must study any one of the foreign languages — German, Japanese, Korean or Dutch — in the second semester. While autonomous colleges are offering foreign language courses, the university has now made it mandatory for affiliated colleges. It has also introduced life skill courses such as patent filing, industry safety norms, welding process, and electronic components in the first two semesters of BE and BTech programmes. The new regulations also allow the affiliated colleges to offer two industry-oriented courses. These will be one-credit courses that can be taught for 15 hours in a semester. "Provision for honours and minor degrees is extended to affiliated colleges. Students can earn an honours degree by securing 18 extra credits or a minor degree by completing 18 credits in another discipline," a member from the academic council said. "The university has given emphasis to practical component by increasing lab-integrated theory courses. In the new regulations, six of eight courses have labs," another member said. These new regulations will be implemented for the first two semesters from this academic year.

MUMBAI: With the demand for specialised electrical steel rising, JSW Steel, which is the largest producer of hot-rolled metal, has further strengthened its existing relationship with the Japanese alloy major JFE Steel Corporation. The companies have announced two more joint ventures which together will invest Rs 5,485 crore to augment the specialised electrical steel capacity to 3.5 lakh tonnes across its Vijayanagar and Nashik facilities. The investment will be made through the joint ventures JSW JFE Electrical Steel in Vijayanagar in Karnataka, and JSW JFE Electrical Steel in Nashik in Maharashtra. While the Vijayanagar facility will get Rs 1,545 crore of additional investment from JSW, the JSW Steel-JFE Steel joint venture will invest Rs 4,300 crore in the Nashik facility to ramp up specialised grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) capacity. Both the capacity augmentations will take its installed output by 3.5 lakh tonnes per annum, the Sajjan Jindal-led company said in a regulatory filing Monday. The move comes as the nation moves faster towards energy and mobility transition, both of which deploy grain-oriented electrical steel. 'The capacity addition will be for the grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) through their joint ventures-- JSW JFE Electrical Steel at Vijayanagar in Karnataka, and JSW JFE Electrical Steel Nashik in Maharashtra. The JV partners will expand grain-oriented electrical steel capacity to 350,000 tonne per annum and will jointly invest around Rs 5,845 crore towards this expansion,' the statement added. GOES is an important material in the production of energy-efficient transformers and large, high-performance generators. "The national green energy transformation, decarbonisation and digital infrastructure development are triggering large demand for high-grade electrical steel. Our GOES investment is a critical step in enabling import substitution, supporting the nation's energy transition goals, and delivering high-efficiency electrical steel solutions to the domestic and global markets. This investment with our long-standing partner JFE Steel reaffirms our commitment to building strategic and future-ready steel capabilities that serve both national and global priorities," the company said in the statement. JSW-JFE Electrical Steel Nashik, formerly known as Thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel India, is one of the first manufacturers of cold-rolled grain-oriented electrical steel (CRGO) in the country with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes per annum located in Nashik.
