Petition for youth space in empty shops launched

Yahoo04-04-2025

A petition calling for the repurposing of an empty unit in a council-owned shopping centre into a space for young people has been launched.
Youth worker Lee Davis is calling on Cherwell District Council to provide a space in Banbury's Castle Quay shopping centre.
Two young people in the town said the "wonderful" proposal was a "really good idea".
Cherwell District Council has not responded to a request for comment.
More than 750 incidents of anti-social behaviour were recorded in the centre of Banbury in 2024 - prompting the council to place it under a public spaces protection order.
Thistle Wyatt said when they were younger there was "really nothing to do", meaning they would "get into all sorts of trouble with my friends".
"I think having an actual space for young people to go and spend their time and have activities and things would be really good," the 21-year-old said.
"I wouldn't have gotten into half the trouble I did as a kid if I had somewhere to actually go and do activities and stuff."
Ysabelle Mason, 20, echoed similar sentiments, and said: "Growing up there was never anything there for us.
"I feel like if there was something for the younger generation to go and do, sit in, play games together, where they can just come and meet up it would get them off the streets, and give them a bit more of a purpose than just roaming around getting up to mischief."
In his proposal, Mr Davis said there were "so many spaces in Castle Quay stood empty" that could be used as a "space dedicated to workshops, mentoring, support, issues based talks, as well as fun activities".
"Let's give everyone a safe space, a safe support network, and most importantly a safe Banbury that we all deserve," he added.

Three injured after vehicle drives into coffee shop

Three people have been injured after a vehicle drove into a coffee shop. The vehicle crashed into Costa Coffee on Burford Road, Carterton, Oxfordshire, on Wednesday afternoon. Thames Valley Police said the road was closed off after the crash, with emergency services at the scene. It does not believe the crash was a deliberate act by the driver. Police advised the public to avoid the area, and asked for any witnesses, or anyone with footage of the incident, to come forward. A police spokesperson also asked the public not to share footage of the scene on social media, "out of respect for those who have been injured". Eight arrests after disorder outside barber shop

Three people have been injured and eight arrested following disorder outside a barber shop in Oxfordshire. Two boys, aged 15 and 17, and a 35-year-old woman required hospital treatment after the disturbance in Orchard Way, Banbury, on Friday afternoon. Three boys, aged 15 to 17, and four men, aged 19 to 25, all from Banbury, were held on suspicion of affray. One of the 17-year-olds was also held on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. A Section 60 stop-and-search order has been imposed for 24 hours in a bid to prevent further violence, Thames Valley Police said. The force said a group of people were involved in a "public disorder incident" outside the barber shop at about 14:20 BST. The Section 60 order, in place until 17:00 BST on Saturday, allows officers to stop and search anyone in the designated area. Det Insp James Holden-White said: "These are emergency powers and the threshold to implement them is very high, however, we are using them to keep our communities safe. "If you are stopped by an officer, please do not be worried as this does not mean that you are in trouble." The boundary of the stop-and-search area starts at the junction of Orchard Way and Gillett Road, on to Orchard way to the junction of Warwick Road, on to Warwick Road to the junction of Bath Road, Bath Road to the junction of Gillett Road and from Gillet Road to the junction of Orchard Way. It includes the shopping precinct at the junction of Orchard Way and The Fairway. The force is appealing for witnesses and anyone with information or footage of the incident.
