Jaipur: Shreyas Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to a triumphant Indian Premier League title victory last year, yet his captaincy often flew under the radar. Now, with a move to Punjab Kings, Iyer has earned widespread praise for his leadership, including from his new team's assistant coach
, who has been with the franchise since 2022.

Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter lauded Iyer's genuine care for his teammates and his ability to lead under pressure. "One thing that impressed me most is his care for his playing group. He's got a really clear message in what he delivers to the players and he lives those habits all the time. The players got an enormous amount of respect for him," Haddin told TOI in an exclusive interaction.
Haddin also highlighted the strong partnership between Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting, noting their effective collaboration, built on their prior association at Delhi Capitals.
"They've had a great relationship since their time in Delhi. They work well together and that's shown this season. A lot of work goes behind the scenes in the analytics and the way you want to play the game. But on the field, it's up to the captain to drive the standards and make decisions under pressure," Haddin praised 'outstanding' Iyer.
Mega auction helped rebuild the squad: Reflecting on the team's strategy, Haddin explained that Punjab Kings approached the recent auction with a clear and strategic vision for building a competitive squad."The
one thing that has changed this season is we had the opportunity for a new auction. We had Ricky come in and we had a really clear mindset on the players we wanted in the style of game that we're going to play. So we're lucky enough there to be real aggressive in the auction," the former wicketkeeper stated.
PBKS wanted to be 'different' this season: Having qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 11 years, Punjab remain focused on their remaining league matches, with Haddin underscoring the team's ambition to secure a top-two finish.

"The mood of the camp is great. It's a reward to qualify, but we've still got two games left. Our consistent message from the start was that we wanted to be different from any other Punjab team that had been involved in this tournament. With two games left, our goal is still to finish in one or two, and that hasn't changed from the start. There has been great buy-in from all the players regarding the style of game and their training habits.
"So to qualify for the final is a good reward not just for the players but everyone outside of the playing group that's put so much work in over the years," the 47-year-old mentioned.
'Kohli will be sorely missed': Virat Kohli made the biggest impact on the Test stage and the format will sorely miss him, feels Haddin.
The former Australia wicketkeeper, who had some heated exchanges with Kohli in the past, says Kohli's passion for the high-stakes moments made him stand out.
"It was just his willingness to compete," Haddin said. "Kohli was a once-in-a-generation player and he changed the way the game was played with how he presented himself physically. The thing that drew Australians to Kohli was his sheer passion for the big moments.
"He enjoyed coming up against teams like Australia, South Africa and England when they were at their peak and it that brought the best out of him," Haddin said.
Kohli's captaincy debut in the 2014 Adelaide Test was marked by confrontations with both Mitchell Johnson and Haddin, and the batter responded with twin centuries to showcase his resilience and skill under pressure.
"He's going to be sorely missed in Test cricket. I think that was his greatest format, where he had the biggest impact," the Punjab Kings' assistant coach added.

No Nicholas Pooran, no problem: West Indies slam 256 runs in T20I vs Ireland

Star West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran might have called time on his international career, but that had no bearing on the team's T20I match against Ireland on June 15. On the back of Evin Lewis and Shai Hope's incredible opening partnership, the Windies hit their second-highest T20I total at the Bready Cricket Ground on Windies scored a total of 256 runs for the loss of 5 wickets, just two runs short of their highest total in T20Is - 258/5, which came against South Africa in 2023. Lewis and Hope added 122 runs in just 10.3 overs before Hope was dismissed by Barry McCarthy against the run of play. The Windies lost a bit of momentum after that but ended up finishing strong, hitting 60 runs in the last three overs. Keacy Carty, who had started slow, lit up at the end and had tremendous help from Romario Shepherd, who finished with 19* off just 6 bowlers were taken to the cleaners. Except for Matthew Humphreys, who finished with an incredible 2/16, the figures of the rest did not make for good reading. Liam McCarthy, on debut, got hammered for 0/81 in his four overs — the second-worst figures in the history of T20Is. Evin Lewis was the star of the show, hitting 91 off just 44 balls. He was dismissed on the second ball of the 13th over, falling in the nervous nineties. Despite falling 9 short of a deserved century, Lewis was able to set up the team for their huge was the third and final T20I of the series. Star player criticises Josh Hazlewood for choosing IPL over national duties, says...

Josh Hazlewood. (PIC - X) Former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson has lashed out at compatriot Josh Hazlewood for prioritising the Indian Premier League over the World Test Championship final against South Africa, saying it had raised 'eyebrows'. One of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's standout bowlers, Hazlewood, 34, had rejoined the southern franchise after the IPL was temporarily suspended due to the border flare-up between India and Pakistan, even as some other Australian players decided against returning to India for the remainder of the tournament. RCB went on to defeat Punjab Kings to lift their maiden IPL trophy with Hazlewood, who ended up with 22 wickets this season, accounting for dangerous opener Priyansh Arya in the final. Hazlewood, a vital cog in the Australian pace battery in the WTC final at Lord's which South Africa won by five wickets on Saturday, could manage only two wickets. 'We've seen concerns about Hazlewood's fitness in recent years, and his decision to prioritise returning to the delayed Indian Premier League over his national team preparations raised eyebrows,' wrote Johnson, who played six IPL seasons, representing Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) and Mumbai Indians, in the West Australian. Taking aim at senior players like Mitchell Starc, Hazlewood, captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, among others, he said that if their aim was to prolong their send-offs till after the Ashes, it was a wrong mindset. 'Our successful 'big four' bowling attack of Mitchell Starc, Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon can't be taken for granted as a lock going forward either. 'If veteran players are sticking around just for the Ashes as a send-off, it does beg the question of whether that's the right mindset. It's crucial that we embrace the future and build confidence in selecting our next Test players,' added Johnson, who has more than 550 wickets in international cricket. He argued that players like young Sam Konstas, Josh Inglis and even 36-year-old pacer Scott Boland, who were desperate to perform for the country weren't finding a place in the national side. 'Players on the fringe such as Sam Konstas, Josh Inglis and Scott Boland, despite being 36, have a different mentality. They're eager to prove themselves every time they get a chance. 'I'm not being overly critical of an ageing team which has achieved plenty together. Our established players including the senior bowling quartet, Usman Khawaja, (Steve) Smith and (Marnus) Labuschagne, have achieved some great things.' He said that the upcoming Test series against the West Indies was the right opportunity to give deserving players an opportunity to showcase their talent. 'It's essential to consider when the right time is to make some tough calls. The upcoming three-Test Windies tour seems like an excellent opportunity to give deserving players a chance to shine, and the finger injury to Smith might have the silver lining of prompting some regeneration. 'Finding a specialist No.3 is crucial, and with the form Labuschagne has shown over the past 18 months, it's hard to justify moving him back into that position. Trying to make changes in all top-three batting slots at once would indeed be risky, and I don't think the selectors will go that route,' he argued. 'Konstas looms as a solid option for the pitches in the West Indies, especially with an experienced player in Khawaja alongside him,' he added.

Tendulkar Requests 'Pataudi Legacy' To Be Continued In India-England Tests: Report

Last Updated: Sachin Tendulkar has urged BCCI and ECB to retain the Pataudi legacy in the India vs England Test series, opposing plans to rename it the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has spoken to BCCI and the England Cricket Board officials to continue with the Pataudi legacy in the upcoming India vs England Test series, according to a report in Cricbuzz, after the boards decided to rename the series as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The trophy comes in place of the Pataudi Trophy, which was being given to the winners of the bilateral Test series in England, but as reports claim, the England Cricket Board has decided to retire it. ECB had communicated the decision to the members of the Pataudi family as well, although the reaction to the same have not been known. There seems to be a change of heart in the England Cricket Board after a request from Tendulkar himself. After the batting legend's request, Jay Shah, a former BCCI secretary and current chair of the ICC, came along and played a crucial role in ensuring that the Pataudi name in the bilateral series remains undiminished. 'Yes, there is a confirmed plan to retain the Pataudi link in the England-India series," an ECB official told Cricbuzz. It might be that the authorities will name a medallion in the name of the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, which will, in all likelihood, be given to the winning skipper. Meanwhile, the proposed grand launch of the trophy, the new symbol of supremacy for the Test series in England, has been postponed. The decision to defer the launch comes in the wake of the grim mood in India after the Ahmedabad plane crash. According to the report, the trophy-naming ceremony was scheduled for Saturday, June 14, on the sidelines of the WTC Final. 'Given the tragic events in India, the announcement may wait a while out of respect (for the lives lost). The BCCI are still deciding on the right time for the announcement. The announcement had been kept flexible due to the tragedy," an ECB official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. More than 275 people, including 241 on board AI-171 Air India aircraft that crashed near the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon, passed away in what is being regarded as one of the worst aviation disasters in the country.
