It's back to the drawing board for the Chicago Cubs for their starting pitcher acquisition at the trade deadline.
In a shocking update, MLB insider Jeff Passan reported Sunday night that the Kansas City Royals have signed Seth Lugo to a multi-year extension.

The details of the extension are unknown at this time, but the Cubs now have to figure out where to pivot next.
Pitchers such as Sandy Alcántara, Edward Cabrera, Mitch Keller, Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly come to mind as the new targets for the Cubs.
Heading into Thursday's deadline, Lugo was one of the most highly sought after pitchers. Teams were drawn to him based on the fact that he would be a rental and require less of a return to go back to Kansas City.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 23: Seth Lugo #67 of the Kansas City Royals delivers a pitch against the Chicago Cubs during the first inning at Wrigley Field on July 23, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. The starting pitching market was already thin, and eliminating Lugo from the market makes it even thinner. Teams like the Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins now know they can ask for even more in this sellers' market.
Adding to the rotation has been a major need for the Cubs since the season began, and Chicago knew it was going to have to overpay for a starter at the deadline. The race in the National League Central is tight with the Milwaukee Brewers winning 15 of their last 21 games. The Brew Crew have made things tight heading into the final two months of the season.
Pressure is now on Jed Hoyer and his staff to pivot as they know the Cubs need to add at least one quality starter or else it will be a very short postseason run, if one even happens at all.

ESPN Host Goes on Wild Rant About Cubs Extending 'Horrible' Kyle Tucker

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Chicago Cubs are in danger of losing Kyle Tucker after trading away three players to acquire him. Tucker will be a free agent after the season and could demand a lucrative deal. The Cubs would be wise to try and extend the All-Star outfielder. He has been named an All-Star in four consecutive seasons and has a .880 OPS with 18 home runs this season. Tucker seems destined to become the next $500 million player in baseball, but ESPN's David Kaplan thinks the Cubs should not pay the price. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JULY 30: Kyle Tucker #30 of the Chicago Cubs points toward the dugout after hitting a double scoring two runs in the sixth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on July 30, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. More"Kyle Tucker, I keep hearing we got to pay this guy. Don't be cheap, Tom. You got to pay him $500 million. Jim Bowden's on going, that dude's going to get 600 million. Let me tell you what he's hitting in the last 30 days since the 29th of June, 208 with a .286 slug," Kaplan said of Tucker on "The REKAP" after the Cubs Tuesday loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. "For those of you who don't follow statistics, that sucks. That's horrible. "How many times has he come up and you're like, weak ground out. He might get a little bloop single. He'll line one in occasionally gets an extra base hit. When's the last time that dude hit a monster hit in a big spot? I'm talking about like a game wreck. That's what you get when you pay 500 million. Not what we're watching from Kyle Tucker. So, wildly disappointed in his performance." Tucker started off the season very string, and looked like an MVP candidate. He was named an All-Star, but his recent slump paired with the Cubs blowing a 6 1/2 game lead in the National League Central has many skeptical. The Cubs gave up Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski and Cam Smith to get Tucker. Paredes was an All-Star this year and is under control through 2027. Smith is having a solid rookie season and could be a star in the next few years. More MLB: Yankees' Aaron Boone Offers Two-Word Response On Deadline Trade For Pitcher

Cubs Predicted To Acquire Marlins Cy Young Winner in Last-Minute Blockbuster

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs still have a void in their starting rotation with the trade deadline approaching. By Thursday evening, the Cubs need to land at least one more arm to try and keep up with the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. If the playoffs started now, it's hard to say who should start Game 3 behind Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd in this current rotation. Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins has always made sense for the Cubs, because he's got a Cy Young Award in his pocket, and would be under relatively affordable control for the next two seasons as well. MIAMI, FLORIDA - JULY 23: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins walks to the dugout during the first inning against the San Diego Padres at loanDepot park on July 23, 2025 in Miami, Florida. MIAMI, FLORIDA - JULY 23: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins walks to the dugout during the first inning against the San Diego Padres at loanDepot park on July 23, 2025 in Miami, bad as Alcantara has been for most of the season, he's allowed no earned runs in back-to-back starts, dropping his ERA to 6.36. Is that good enough for the Cubs to take a swing at landing him? On Thursday, Ehsan Kassim of USA Today predicted that Alcantara would end the day wearing a Cubs uniform. "Miami and Chicago pull off a blockbuster with the Marlins sending Sandy Alcantara to the Cubs for outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara," wrote Kassim. Alcantara, 29, struggled for much of this season to find his command after returning from Tommy John surgery. He's still throwing hard (upper-90s fastballs), but if he's not properly locating them or tunneling his secondary pitches well off of the fastball trajectory, he's been getting rocked. Alcantara is set to make $17 million next season and $21 million in 2027 (club option). Even if he's not his Cy Young self, the money on that deal isn't bad at all for a big-market team. But it's unclear if the Marlins think Alcantara's trade value is high enough to move him. It remains to be seen whether they'd accept a package involving just one top prospect, especially one like Kevin Alcantara, who is only Chicago's fourth-best prospect. In landing Andrew Kittredge, Cubs set to reinforce bullpen: Source

After picking up Michael Soroka from the Washigton Nationals to lengthen the back end of their rotation, the Chicago Cubs were set up to address the bullpen Thursday, trading for Andrew Kittredge of the Baltimore Orioles. The return of the trade, which a source confirmed to The Athletic, is not yet known. Advertisement Kittredge, who pitched a scoreless inning in the Orioles' 9-8 loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday, is 2-2 with a 3.45 ERA in his age-35 season, with 32 strikeouts and eight walks in 31 1/3 innings. Formerly a member of the Tampa Bay Rays (2017-2023) and St. Louis Cardinals (2024), he was an All-Star in 2021. For the Cubs, who pulled back to within a game of the Milwaukee Brewers with a 10-3 win on Wednesday, the bullpen has been a particular area of needed improvement. While their relief ERA going into Wednesday night was 3.90 — good for 15th out of 30 teams — their relievers had only been worth 1.0 fWAR, which ranked 25th of 30, ahead of only the Detroit Tigers, Nationals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels. One thing Kittredge does extremely well: he gets batters to chase. Per Baseball Savant, he has a 41.3 percent chase rate. He hasn't pitched enough innings to qualify for their percentile rankings, but here's a list of their top five qualifiers, by out of zone swing percentage: (Source: Baseball Savant) Most of that chase comes on Kittredge's nasty slider, which has 33 inches of vertical drop and 6.2 inches of glove-side horizontal break. His fastball is pedestrian, averaging 94.4 miles per hour, but paired with a slider, split-finger and sinker, his arsenal is good enough to boost the Cubs' bullpen.
