All Blacks beat Pumas to go top of world rankings
New Zealand held off a second-half fightback to beat Argentina 41-24 in their Rugby Championship opener and return to the top of the world rankings for the first time in four years.Winger Sevu Reece and substitute hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho each scored two tries for the All Blacks who replace world champions South Africa, who were beaten 38-22 by Australia in Johannesburg, as the number one team in the world.The visitors were 10-0 ahead inside the opening 10 minutes in Cordoba thanks to Beauden Barrett's penalty and Reece's first try.Pumas winger Rodrigo Isgro went over to reduce the deficit to three points, but quickfire tries from Ardie Savea, Cortez Ratima and Reece again put New Zealand 31-10 ahead at the break.Argentina launched a spirited recovery after the break, with Tomas Albornoz powering over 11 minutes after the restart.And when Billy Proctor was sent to the sin bin, Joaquin Oviedo's try reduced the deficit to seven points and raised hopes of a famous comeback win.But substitute Taukei'aho snuffed out those hopes with two tries in the final 12 minutes to seal an All Blacks victory. "We talked about starting well and I think we did that. We finished the second half quite strong - it was a bit of a statement there," said All Blacks captain Scott Barrett."In the second half we were a little bit slow and probably a little bit of indiscipline fed their game, which was disappointing and allowed the crowd to get in behind them."They threw a lot of punches at us and I'm pleased the guys who finished the game were able to win some arm wrestles, get some territory and most importantly come away with a good win."The defeat extends Argentina's winless record on home soil against New Zealand to 15 matches.The two sides meet again in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

The freestyle skier, who was born in the United States but switched to represent China ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics, claimed she was involved in a 'very horrific accident,' during a training session in New Zealand. The Winter Games poster girl, who holds the record for the most freestyle skiing World Cup titles in history, was flown to Christchurch Hospital for further testing. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Gu being taken to the hospital on a stretcher, according to the South China Morning Post. 'Unfortunately, a very terrible accident occurred yesterday due to human error,' Gu wrote on Chinese social media platform Weibo. 'I hope I can return to the snow soon, but I'm still waiting for confirmation from the expert team.' However, the 21-year-old appeared to suggest that an overly-eager fan was to blame for the incident. 'I have to concentrate fully during training, especially when I'm preparing for the start,' the double Olympic champion wrote, while thanking fans for their support. Top coach makes horror claim that Australian athletes have a 'natural genetic advantage' to Asians
The former manager of the Philippines' men's national basketball team, Yeng Guiao, has appeared to claim that Australian and New Zealand teams should not play in the same competitions as the Philippines because he believes players from those countries have 'a natural advantage in genetics'. Australia clinched their third successive FIBA Asia Cup title last week, beating China by one point in what was a nerve-shredding final. The Philippines were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the tournament by the Boomers, with the Gilas, who are now coached by American Tim Cone, suffering an 84-60 defeat. But their former coach, Guiao, who took charge of the team between 2018 and 2019, appeared to claim according to the Philippine Star, that the Kiwis and Aussies should not be playing in the same zone as the Philippines. 'Australia and New Zealand shouldn't be playing in our zone,' Guiao, who now coaches the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, said according to the Philippine Star. 'They have a natural advantage in genetics. 'They should be playing in some other zone, not in Asia. 'It's tough enough to beat Japan, Korea, Iran, Jordan, Chinese-Taipei, China and Lebanon but we can beat them.' There is no basis in fact to prove that Guiao's claim is correct. The former Philippines coach, who has also worked as the Philippine Basketball League commissioner, admitted that while he wasn't too disappointed by the quarter-final defeat by the Boomers, it was disappointing to suffer a loss against Chinese Taipei in the group stages. Guiao has also been impressed by the work of coach Cone, who notably led the side to winning gold at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. 'Coach Tim has his own style and his track record of success is evident,' Guiao said, per the Philippine Star. 'The triangle and playing a short rotation are two things he's known for; it's his brand. He proved what we can do by winning gold at the Asian Games. 'Let's rally behind him and not be critical.' Interestingly, he also went on to admit it was important for the Philippines to continue playing top sides. He added: 'Trending in the international game are shooting threes, playing with pace and space, scoring in transition. 'If your opponent plays fast, you have to play faster. It's also about developing basketball IQ and we can do it if we continue to play together. 'The important thing is we keep playing teams like Australia and New Zealand to get better.'
