9 New Orleans inmates who broke out of jail plead not guilty to escape charges
Officials have repeatedly pointed to video surveillance of the brazen escape, one of the largest jailbreaks in recent U.S. history, and vowed to bring the inmates to justice. A 10th inmate, Derrick Groves, a convicted killer, is the lone fugitive still on the run.
'Everyone is entitled to due process. But there's a video of these detainees running out of the jail in the middle of the night. They were not heading to court hearings," Attorney General Liz Murrill said on Wednesday. "We will continue to hold everyone accountable for the escape.'
The nine men appeared via Zoom from the Louisiana State Penitentiary for their arraignment Wednesday. Groves' attorney was present for the hearing but did not enter a plea on his behalf, reported The New Orleans Advocate/The Times-Picayune.
All 10 men are charged with simple escape, which is tacked on top of previous criminal counts that initially landed them in jail, Murrill's office confirmed. The men's attorneys could not immediately be reached for comment.
The escape charge carries a sentence of two to five years in prison.
Authorities say that the men broke out of the jail after yanking open a locked door to access a cell, where the water had been turned off, removing a toilet and squeezing through a hole in a wall. Video surveillance shows 10 men sprinting out of the jail and fleeing into the coverage of darkness.
The getaway went unnoticed for hours until a routine morning head count. When authorities located the point of the escape they found a message written on the cell wall above the hole, once covered by the toilet: 'To Easy LoL'.
At least 16 people have been arrested and charged for helping in the escape or the aftermath. Many of them are family members of the escapees and face charges for providing transport, food, shelter and cash to the fugitives.

A jealous ex who murdered a father-of-six after she found his Tinder profile on Christmas Day has been jailed. Kirsty Carless, 33, plunged a knife into 31-year-old Louis Price's heart in the early hours of December 25, 2024, in an attack fuelled by cocaine and alcohol. She had been drinking double vodka and cokes with a male friend at the pub before going back to his home to have sex multiple times. At around 1.30am on Christmas Day, a friend sent her a screenshot of Mr Price's Tinder profile. In a furious rage Carless armed herself with a kitchen knife and ordered a taxi to his parents' house to confront him. Harrowing CCTV footage shows Carless storming up towards the house and 'stalking' Mr Price around the garden while menacingly waving the knife towards his face. Seconds later the taxi driver heard a 'very loud and prolonged' scream before Carless emerged for the house 'anxious and sweating' after leaving Mr Price to die on the conservatory floor. Carless then went to her parents house where she admitted what she had done and called 999. Bodycam footage of her arrest shows the remorseless killer sitting on a sofa as a police officer places her in handcuffs. Carless pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murdering her ex, instead claiming he had taken money from her and planned to destroy the caravan he was living in. She has now been jailed for life with a minimum of 25 years after she was convicted of murder and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. She was also found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm over a previous incident, but cleared of intentional strangulation.

A KILLER ex who stalked her ex through the garden before stabbing him to death after finding his Tinder has been jailed for life. Kirsty Carless, 33, plunged a knife into 31-year-old Louis Price's heart on Christmas Day in an attack "motivated by anger and jealousy". 9 9 9 The killer had called dad-of-six Louis 45 times in a 30-minute period after a pal sent her his Tinder profile. This was despite her having sex three times with a male friend she had been downing double vodka and cokes with that night. She then jumped in a taxi to Louis' home in Norton Canes, Staffordshire, armed with a kitchen knife. CCTV released by police shows Carless running up the front path to confront Louis, who she expected to find with a woman, before "stalking" him around the garden. He was later tragically discovered dead with a single stab wound to the chest in the conservatory. Carless has now been jailed for life with a minimum of 25 years after she was convicted of murder and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. She was also found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm over a previous incident, but cleared of intentional strangulation. Stafford Crown Court heard Louis was considered by police to be "at very high risk of domestic abuse". At the time of the horror, Carless was on police bail after allegedly strangling Louis in November 2024. Louis had previously told a friend he was scared of his on-off partner and believed "something bad would happen to him". One neighbour had called police after witnessing Carless chasing and hitting Louis in the ribs with a metal pole as he tried to protect his head. There was another incident where she allegedly poured bleach over his clothes and threw a shoe out of the window, which hit him on the head. 9 9 9 9 In a witness statement to police, Louis said that "on the whole", has " the relationship had been "abusive'. He added: 'She has constantly been abusive towards me, stopped me doing things I enjoy like football, and physically abused me.' In the early hours of Christmas Day, Carless and drunk alcohol and taken cocaine before she headed to Louis' parents' home. She asked the taxi driver to wait outside as she would only be a minute before she launched into the brutal attack. The killer was later captured on police bodycam sobbing as she was arrested on suspicion of murder. Carless claimed she only phoned him to see if he had taken money from inside a card at her home and went round to get the cash back. She said she had no recollection of stabbing him and was "not a violent person". Carless told the court: "I remember being in the conservatory, that was it the next thing I knew I was in the kitchen. 'Louis was sat on the floor. Then I panicked and ran off.' Carless denied murder and possessing an offensive weapon. She also pleaded not guilty to one count of intentional strangulation and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in relation to the incident on November 11, 2024.
