Google and OpenAI back new online safety tools to combat child sexual abuse
Google, OpenAI and children's gaming platform Roblox are among the firms backing a new initiative to provide free online safety tools to firms around the globe.
The initiative, known as Robust Open Online Safety Tools (Roost), will help firms otherwise unable to afford or build their own safety mechanisms gain access to technology to help detect, review and report child sexual abuse material, and use AI to help power other safety features.
The scheme has also been backed by former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt, online messaging platform Discord and several academic and research organisations, and was announced during the first day of the AI Action Summit in Paris.
The summit is hosting world leaders, tech firms and academics for a range of talks on the future of AI and how the technology can be used in a range of fields including sustainability and safety, as well as how it could impact society.
Mr Schmidt said the scheme 'addresses a critical need to accelerate innovation in online child safety and AI by providing small companies and non-profits access to technologies they currently lack'.
He said the 'collaborative, open-source approach' would help 'foster innovation', and help create a 'safer internet for everyone'.
The summit is being attended by tech figures including Google boss Sundar Pichai and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, as well as a number of world leaders and senior figures including US Vice President JD Vance and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with many nations looking to use the summit to showcase their own potential leadership of the AI space.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has chosen not to attend the two-day summit, but Technology Secretary Peter Kyle is in Paris to represent the UK and said he would be using the trip to encourage more investment in the UK's AI infrastructure and 'cement our position as an AI pioneer'.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting the summit, announced ahead of its opening on Monday that companies were planning to invest around £91 billion in AI projects in France in the coming years.

WPP boss Mark Read to step down amid AI pressure on advertising
The boss of the UK's largest advertising firm WPP is to step down at the end of the year. Mark Read, chief executive of the business, which owns agencies including Ogilvy, has revealed his departure as the company battles the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) in the sector. Shares in the company dipped after the announcement, moving it closer to the five-year-low it struck in April. Mr Read has been at the company for 30 years, with seven of those as chief executive. He took over the top role in 2018 amid a period of upheaval following the resignation of Sir Martin Sorrell amid a workplace inquiry. Mr Read led the business through a turbulent period as it sought to grow despite pressure from social media giants and the rapid expansion of AI. In its most recent update in April, WPP reported that revenues dropped by 5% to £3.24 billion for the first quarter of 2025. Mr Read said: 'When I took on this role our mission was to build a simpler, stronger business, and put structure and new energy behind our creativity and performance, powered by world-leading technology. 'I am proud that our teams across the business have delivered that exceptionally well. 'After seven years in the role, and with the foundations in place for WPP's continued success, I feel it is the right time to hand over the leadership of this amazing company.' WPP has said its search for a successor is under way. Former BT boss Philip Jansen, who was appointed WPP chairman last year, said Mr Read will continue to focus on the firm's growth strategy over the rest of the year. Mr Jansen added: 'On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Mark for his contributions not only as CEO but throughout his more than 30 years of leadership and service to the company. 'During that time Mark has played a central role in transforming the company into a world leader in modern marketing services, with deep AI, data and technology capabilities, global presence and unrivalled creative talent, setting WPP up well for longer-term success.'

Rednote joins wave of Chinese firms releasing open-source AI models
BEIJING, June 9 (Reuters) - China's Rednote, one of the country's most popular social media platforms, has released an open-source large language model, joining a wave of Chinese tech firms making their artificial intelligence models freely available. The approach contrasts with many U.S. tech giants like OpenAI and Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab, which have kept their most advanced models proprietary, though some American firms including Meta (META.O), opens new tab have also released open-source models. Open sourcing allows Chinese companies to demonstrate their technological capabilities, build developer communities and spread influence globally at a time when the U.S. has sought to stymie China's tech progress with export restrictions on advanced semiconductors. Rednote's model, called is available for download on developer platform Hugging Face. A company technical paper describing it was uploaded on Friday. In coding tasks, the model performs comparably to Alibaba's Qwen 2.5 series, though it trails more advanced models such as DeepSeek-V3, the technical paper said. RedNote, also known by its Chinese name Xiaohongshu, is an Instagram-like platform where users share photos, videos, text posts and live streams. The platform gained international attention earlier this year when some U.S. users flocked to the app amid concerns over a potential TikTok ban. The company has invested in large language model development since 2023, not long after OpenAI's release of ChatGPT in late 2022. It has accelerated its AI efforts in recent months, launching Diandian, an AI-powered search application that helps users find content on Xiaohongshu's main platform. Other companies that are pursuing an open-source approach include Alibaba ( opens new tab which launched Qwen 3, an upgraded version of its model in April. Earlier this year, startup DeepSeek released its low-cost R1 model as open-source software, shaking up the global AI industry due to its competitive performance despite being developed at a fraction of the cost of Western rivals.

Live updates as Reform UK leader Nigel Farage makes major speech in Port Talbot
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage will be in Port Talbot today to give a press conference, laying out his plans for the party in Wales with months to go until a crucial election for his party. The most recent poll for Wales suggests his party is in line to take its first seats in the Senedd at the election in May 2026. Its only representation in Wales at the moment is with councillors, but a YouGov/Barn Cymru poll which asked people their voting intention for the Welsh Parliament in May put Reform UK in second with 25% of the vote. They were only behind Plaid Cymru who were projected to get 30% of the vote and ahead of Labour's 18%. You can read that here. In an opinion piece for WalesOnline, the party leader has given his first glimpses of policies ahead of the election. Mr Farage has said the party would allow coal mining again in Wales and says its long term plan is to "reopen the Port Talbot steelworks". The steelworks, owned by Tata, have not closed but its remaining blast furnaces were closed in 2024, with work now ongoing to build an electric arc furnace which will recycle previously-used steel. Thousands of jobs are being lost as part of the change. The Indian-owned company said the blast furnaces were at the end of their operational lives and too expensive to replace. The Port Talbot steelworks were, the company said, losing £1m a day before the blast furnaces were turned off. Reform UK say it would "use Welsh Development Grants to support real industry. We'll redirect economic funding from consultants and NGOs to actual factory floors, machinery, and industrial jobs in places like Llanelli, Shotton, and Ebbw Vale". Nigel Farage has also said the party would also set up "regional technical colleges" for people to have a "path into proper trade". The party would also, it says, stop any building being used for asylum seeker accommodation, end funding to the Welsh Refugee Council and scrap the Welsh Government's "Nation of Sanctuary". It also vowed to set up an Elon Musk style department to cut costs. "A Reform UK Senedd will also save hundreds of millions each year by cutting bureaucracy, waste and bad management. The establishment of Welsh DOGE will help us uncover where there is woke and wasteful spending and we will make sure those funds are redirected to frontline services," Mr Farage pledges.
