Ex-convict on parole steals from customers, hides cash in dry riser
The 28-year-old man, Ho Wen Zong (transliterated), pleaded guilty on Aug 6 to one count of theft and another under the Computer Misuse Act.
At the time of the incident, Ho was on parole from Jan 23 to May 12, 2024.
Stole while on the job
On April 17, 2024 at about 1.15pm, Ho was moving items with three colleagues when he entered a 56-year-old customer's bedroom and spotted a handbag atop a drawer. While she was distracted, he took her wallet and pocketed the cash inside.
He then returned the wallet to its original spot and proceeded to her mother's room, where he stole a second wallet from a handbag on the doorknob. He took the cash and hid the wallet in a cupboard.
In total, he made off with RM195 (S$59) and S$157. To avoid detection, he concealed the money inside a dry riser pipe outside the home.
The theft came to light when the customer noticed the missing money while buying drinks for the movers.
She questioned the workers, but no one admitted to the crime, leading her to call the police. Officers later recovered the stolen cash from the dry riser and arrested Ho.
He later admitted to the court that he had racked up about $7,000 in debts from three licensed moneylenders due to a gambling habit, and committed the thefts because his salary was not enough to cover repayments.
Sold Singpass details for $8,000
In a separate incident, Ho confessed to selling his Singpass credentials for $8,000 to an unknown individual, who used them to open a cryptocurrency trading account. Although Ho suspected something was amiss, he agreed as he needed the money urgently.
His details were later linked to a bank account that received over $90,000 in transactions within a month. When the account was frozen, only $31 remained.
Defendant requests delaying of sentence
The prosecutor noted that although Ho had previously served four months in jail for a similar theft in 2023, the amount involved in the current case was smaller, so no heavier sentence was sought.
Ho requested a deferment of his sentence to settle personal matters. The judge asked his father - who stood as bailor - if he was willing to post $15,000 bail.
The judge also questioned Ho's father about his son's earlier claims that he was seriously ill and preparing to marry a foreign fiancée.
His father denied both these claims.
"He's already so big, and we don't know what he gets up to when he's not at home," the father said, but agreed to remain as Ho's bailor.
The judge ultimately granted the request, and Ho will begin serving his sentence on Sept 1.

‘It's so close': Crowds turn up for Red Lions, mobile column at National Day heartland celebrations

This year, the mobile column made pit stops in the heartland for the first time, allowing the public to get up close with vehicles from the Singapore Armed Forces and the Home Team. The vehicles stopped for 1.5 hours at five places across the island before they arrived at the heartland celebrations. Snaking queues of people braved the afternoon heat to catch the display, many with children in tow. Others, deterred by the queue, watched from outside the fence. One of the pit stops was at CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) and CHIJ Secondary, where the mobile column arrived at about 2.20pm. Mr Ryan Ng, 40, arrived at the school with his family at about 1.30pm, driving there from their home in Bukit Batok. He told The Straits Times that he had taken his two older children, aged seven and four, to the National Day Parade (NDP) at the Padang the day before, and they had wanted to see more of the mobile column. Ms Ho said her family had watched the mobile column by the roadside in 2020, but the vehicles did not stop for them to get a closer look. 'Her papa used to drive a tank as a reservist,' Ms Ho, 35, added. 'It's a rare opportunity getting to see the tanks.' Another visitor Clement Lim, 41, said he was unable to secure tickets to NDP this year. 'A lot of people want to be involved in NDP, but there's only so much space available, so I'm glad we can come to see this,' said Mr Lim, who was with his wife, daughter and his brother-in-law's family. Crowds in Bishan also got a special treat: the Red Lions display jump, one of the highlights of Bishan's celebrations this year. Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing arrived at the open field next to Junction 8 in Bishan at about 3.30pm to watch the Red Lions and interact with residents. After a slight delay due to the drizzle, the Red Lions were greeted with rousing cheers from the crowd as they landed on the open field next to Junction 8 at about 4.35pm. Speaking to ST, Mr Gomez, who lives in Bishan, said he was about to go for a run but decided to drop by the heartland celebrations. '(Watching the Red Lions) at the Padang on National Day itself, it causes goosebumps, but over here it's so close to the people who might not be able to go to the Padang, so I'm glad that the Red Lions are doing this for the community,' said Mr Gomez. The 12 vehicles from the mobile column arrived in Bishan at about 5pm, to the delight of children, who waved enthusiastically to the soldiers on board. At about 7pm, grassroots advisors arrived in Bishan, and were warmly greeted by residents, who queued up to take photos with them. Among the special guests were Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat, and Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo. Taking to the stage at about 8pm, Mr Lee greeted the crowd by wishing them a happy 60th National Day. 'We've come a long way, and may we work together for many more years, to make Singapore successful, prosperous and happy, and a little red dot in the world for many many more years to come,' said Mr Lee. The heartland celebrations, organised by the People's Association in partnership with the National Day Parade (NDP) executive committee, took place at four other locations across the island. They were held from 4pm to past 9pm at the Bukit Gombak ActiveSG Stadium, and the open fields beside FutsalArena @ Yishun, One Punggol, and Wisma Geylang Serai. At One Punggol, the venue was packed with attendees. Madam Veronica Ong, 58, tried on the cameo face paint at one of the booths, together with her daughter's friend Kaitlyn Tan. 'We just wanted to try it out,' said Madam Ong, who could not stop laughing as Ms Tan struggled to remove the face paint afterwards. She had snagged Ms Tan and her daughter Aloysia Han tickets to NDP and to the heartland celebrations. Ms Tan said she enjoyed the 'interactive' segment of the show, when soldiers came up the stairs to greet the audience in the stands. Ms Daya Khairul, 29, snapped photos of her four-year-old son Aariz Muhaimin and her three-year-old nephew Musa Kharyandi in mini SAF uniforms at another booth. She had come with her family and her sister's family after watching NDP on TV the night before, a show she described as 'emotional'. 'They didn't want to take off the uniform, until we told them they would have to stay at the booth if they wanted to keep wearing it,' she laughed. Crowds gathered around DPM Gan and his Punggol GRC team when they arrived at about 7.30pm, interacting and posing for pictures with attendees at the mobile column display before moving into the main event space. A total of 23 grassroots advisors made an appearance, including Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Indranee Rajah. Addressing the crowds at 7.40pm, he said: 'When we look back at the last 60 years, we can have a sense of confidence, a sense of pride, because we have indeed come a long way. We have achieved great miracles that no countries have seen before.' 'But at the same time, we cannot take our success and progress for granted. We must continue to work together, to stay together, remain united, so that we can move forward and progress as one nation, one community, one people, and we will know we'll leave no one behind.' As the night ended, fireworks lit up the sky over the five districts as a final cheer for Singapore's 60th birthday.

Man who tried to hack RedeemSG arrested
A 39-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a hacking attempt on RedeemSG, the Government's digital voucher system. A police report was lodged by the RedeemSG team on July 28, following multiple suspicious attempts to access voucher links on its portal. The attempts were unsuccessful and no vouchers were compromised, the police said in a statement on Aug 10. Within a day of the report, officers from the Cybercrime Command under the Criminal Investigation Department identified the man and arrested him on July 29. Authorities also seized a laptop which was used in committing the offence for further investigation. The man is currently being investigated for the offence of attempted unauthorised access to computer material under the Computer Misuse Act. If found guilty, he may face a jail term of up to two years, a fine of up to $5,000, or both. Police investigations are ongoing.
