Lerone Murphy views Aaron Pico UFC 319 co-main event at No. 1 contender fight

USA Today3 days ago
CHICAGO – Lerone Murphy views his upcoming fight against UFC newcomer Aaron Pico as a title eliminator.
The bout serves as the co-feature of UFC 319 (ESPN+ pay-per-view) at United Center, and Murphy (16-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) is taking it as if he's fighting a top 5 opponent, even though Pico (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has never fought in the promotion.
"I don't think rankings have anything to do with it," Murphy told reporters at media day. "Most of the time, they don't mean anything. So, everybody knows his level in the world, and he's got a big name, so for me, he's ranked No. 3, or wherever. That's how I'm looking at it. He's a solid opponent and a great matchup."
Pico is the latest big name to come from the Bellator-PFL banner. Others who recently made the same move such as Patricio Freire and Patchy Mix, did not have success in their debuts. The infamous "octagon jitters" may have been a factor in their UFC debut setbacks, but Murphy isn't counting on that being the case with Pico.
"Everybody is different, everybody handles pressure differently as well," Murphy said. "So, I'm not banking on that to happen, but it's a possibility. This is the biggest show in the world, and what an arena to make your debut. So yeah, that could play a factor. It could be a factor. This is the place to be, the UFC.
"... You go back to the likes of Patchy Mix and stuff like that, I just think that comes down to matchup. Also, these other guys that have come over that have not performed may not have been in their prime. I think Aaron Pico's in his prime. So, I expect to see the best version of him."
With a win, Murphy will have secured his second win in 2025, and his ninth overall under the UFC banner. Currently ranked No. 6 by the promotion in the featherweight division, Murphy believes a win here will elevate him to a shot against Alexander Volkanovski, because Pico was set to fight No. 1 contender Movsar Evloev before his withdrawal.
"Beating Aaron Pico is going to put me in that No. 1 contender spot," Murphy said. "He was supposed to fight Movsar, like you know, and Movsar got hurt or sick or whatever happened. So, I'm the replacement now. This is a No. 1 contender fight."

UFC 319: Carlos Prates KOs Geoff Neal with spinning back elbow in final second of first round

Carlos Prates made the first round end with a buzzer rather than a thud at UFC 319. In the final seconds of the opening frame, "The Nightmare" landed a spinning back elbow to the head of veteran Geoff Neal for the wildest finish of the night. Neal was barely responsive on the floor as Prates began celebrating. It was the ninth spinning back elbow KO in UFC history, and Prates' UFC-best fifth KO since the start of 2024. The win gives Prates a big bounce back after a loss to Ian Machado Garry in April, which ended an 11-fight win streak. Prates was feeling good enough that he asked UFC CEO Dana White, from the Octagon, for both a $50,000 bonus and a spot in the upcoming UFC card in Rio de Janeiro in October. The Brazilian got both, which is not how White usually conducts business. We'll see whom Prates gets in Rio, but he's once again on track for a big opponent in a career that has more than delivered since he joined the promotion in 2024. His record now sits at 22-7 (5-1 in the UFC), while Neal took his third loss in four fights since 2023.

UFC 319 results: Michael Page styles on Jared Cannonier in unanimous nod

Michael Page picked up the biggest win of his UFC career by outpointing former title challenger Jared Cannonier. On the main card of UFC 319 at United Center in Chicago, Page (24-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) made it back-to-back wins under the UFC banner by winning a unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) over Cannonier (18-9 MMA, 11-9 UFC). Starting out with his hands at his hips as usual, Page showed off his quick in-and-out movements while pretending to dribble a basketball. Cannonier found an entry to clinch, but Page defended well to prevent a takedown. A moment later, Page blasted Cannonier with a hard overhand right, sending him to the canvas. More taunting from Page immediately followed. Page crushed Cannonier with a hard right hand early in Round 2 and audibly reacted to the damage he caused. A few moments later, Page blitzed with a combination, sending Cannonier to the ground again. Later in the round, Cannonier got a takedown, but couldn't keep Page on the canvas. Early in Round 3, Cannonier took advantage of an opportunity left by Page during an exchange, and took control on the mat with plenty of time to work. In full mount with over three minutes, Cannonier looked for ground and pound, but Page was quick to get back to half guard. Cannonier threatened a kimura, but it wasn't there. Cannonier finished out the round on top with punches. With the result, Page makes it back-to-back wins for the first time under the UFC banner. After winning his debut against Kevin Holland, "MVP" dropped a decision to Ian Machado Garry. He successfully rebounded with a nod over Shara Magomedov in February. Cannonier now falls to 1-3 over his last four outings. The former title challenger entered this three-round bout after six straight main event bouts. Up-to-the-minute UFC 319 results include:

UFC 319 results: Carlos Prates lands spinning knockout of Geoff Neal

Carlos Prates may have turned in a Knockout of the Year candidate Saturday in Chicago. On the UFC 319 main card, Prates (22-7 MMA, 5-1 UFC) audibly cracked Geoff Neal (16-7 MMA, 8-5 UFC) with a spinning back elbow for a knockout stoppage at 4:59 of Round 1. The welterweight bout took place at United Center. Prior to the finish, both men brought the heat but in a contained manner. They were measured, not wild. Both landed hard shots. But it was Prates' spinning maneuver that sealed the deal. After his win, Prates asked Dana White for three things: a slot on the UFC Fight Night event in Rio in October, a $50,000 bonus, and for his friend Marcos Degli to be signed. White immediately obliged two of the three, telling Prates he could fight in Rio and also awarding him a $50,000 bonus. Degli's signing remains to be seen. The win bounces Prates back from his first UFC loss, which came in a short-notice main event vs. Ian Machado Garry in April. Neal, 34, is finished with strikes for the first time in his UFC tenure and falls to 1-3 in his most recent four. Up-to-the-minute UFC 319 results include:
