Alexa+ Takes a Page From Apple Intelligence With Staggered AI Rollout

Alexa+ is expected to debut on Monday with a few new features, but it may be months before we see what Amazon's new voice assistant can really do.
As The Washington Post reports, next week's launch will be limited to summoning an Uber or asking what you should cook for dinner. You can also upload documents for Alexa+ to summarize, but you can't delete what you feed into Alexa+ for now, the Post says. The document uploads—from instruction manuals to kids' soccer practice schedules—aim to give Alexa more information about users' lives so it can act as a comprehensive assistant.
At launch, the updated voice assistant will work on newer Echo devices (no first-gen versions or Echo Show 2nd Gen). The Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21 are the first in line, but Alexa+ Early Access will also roll out to the Echo Show 8 and 10, according to the fine print.
Early access also includes a mobile app experience, where users can "chat with the new Alexa on mobile, get personalized recommendations, and manage your home on-the-go," Amazon says. Eventually, you'll be able to summon Alexa+ on the web and via Fire TVs and tablets.
When Early Access ends, Alexa+ will become part of Prime or $19.99/month on its own.
"Features will be released on a rolling basis as Alexa continues to get smarter and more capable every day," Amazon says. "Alexa may not get everything right, and we value feedback from everyone who participates. Just say, 'Alexa, I have feedback.'"
This revamped Alexa promises a more humanlike conversational flow—no more rigid "Alexa voice," as Amazon's head of devices, Panos Panay, said at last month's reveal. Whether it works as expected remains to be seen.
Other features in the works include the ability to order takeout on Grubhub after talking through dinner options with Alexa+ and identifying family members on the device's camera, the Post says. At the launch event, Panay showcased camera recognition by asking Alexa+ to access his home's Ring camera to confirm if his daughter had walked their dog that day.
This gradual rollout of AI features mirrors what Apple is doing with its AI platform, Apple Intelligence. However, this strategy has left customers confused about what features are available and on which devices.
A group of iPhone 16 buyers are suing Apple for false advertising since Apple Intelligence features did not launch until a month after Apple's flagship devices hit stores. And even then, it only included a handful of marginally helpful AI tools and a barebones Siri update.
As Amazon preps for a larger Alexa+ rollout, meanwhile, it turned off the ability for users to store their Echo device recordings locally. Now, all that data will go to Amazon's servers to feed "generative AI features that rely on the processing power of Amazon's secure cloud."

While Towns and Jalen Brunson just led New York to its first ECF appearance since 2000, many have questions about if those two can actually win a championship together due to their defensive shortcomings. Bill Simmons opined on a KD-KAT trade earlier this week, citing Towns' close friendship with Devin Booker as a reason for the Suns to pursue the option. KAT and Book played together at Kentucky, nearly pulling off an undefeated season before losing to Wisconsin in the Final Four. If Phoenix truly has no interest in rebuilding, giving Booker a star running mate with whom he has a good relationship makes some sense, even considering Towns' flaws. Advertisement For the Knicks, this would be a drastic move given Towns is so much younger than KD and did just help get this team two wins short of the NBA Finals. Perhaps the thought is this run was a fluke and New York just needs to get out of the KAT business, which is essentially what Simmons argues. Durant isn't what he once was, but he's still a high-level scorer who could take pressure off Brunson, and Mitchell Robinson could potentially be the starting center. (Whether Robinson could hold up without getting hurt is another question, and that goes for KD as well.) The Suns will surely consider all options when it comes to a Kevin Durant trade. If the Knicks are actually serious about trading Karl-Anthony Towns, maybe we see some fireworks.

When selecting investments, it is easy to get hung up on a particular metric, such as a dividend yield or a price ratio, but investors need to look deeper or they might miss opportunities. Inc. AMZN provides an example: Its stock has typically traded at a high price-to-earnings ratio. Investors tend to look at a stock's forward P/E ratio, which is the price divided by analysts' consensus estimate for earnings per share over the following 12 months. Over the past 10 years, Amazon's stock has traded at an average forward P/E of 79.5, while the S&P 500 SPX has traded at an average forward P/E of 18.7, according to FactSet. But Amazon's stock was up 855% for 10 years through Friday, while the S&P 500 returned 235% with dividends reinvested. The emphasis was on reinvesting most of the cash being generated to expand the business in multiple directions. So the Amazon story was about revenue growth, rather than EPS growth. And that brings us to Nvidia Corp. NVDA. Last week Laila Maidan looked into Nvidia's relatively high forward P/E and explained why the stock might still be considered a bargain for long-term investors, based on analysts' expectations for the company's revenue growth. Nvidia's stock traded at a forward P/E of 28.1 at Friday's close, while the S&P 500 traded at a weighted forward P/E of 21.4. It is not a surprise to see Nvidia trading at a P/E valuation that is 31% higher than that of the index. But based on consensus estimates among analysts polled by FactSet, Nvidia is expected to increase its sales per share at a compound annual growth rate of 41.7% through 2026, versus an expected sales-per-share CAGR of 5.5% for the S&P 500. All such estimates in this article are adjusted by FactSet to match calendar years; about 20% of companies in the S&P 500 have fiscal reporting periods that don't match the calendar. For Nvidia, investors pay a premium for the higher expected growth rate. And that sets the stage for a stock screen. Which companies trading at low P/E multiples are also expected to increase revenue quickly? For this screen we are looking at revenue growth projections — specifically sales per share. We are using the per-share numbers because they reflect expected dilution to a company's share count if it issues new shares to help fund an acquisition. Merging with a competitor will obviously make revenue increase. But if the share count rises significantly, sales per share will be lower. The per-share numbers help investors to understand whether or not a company might have overpaid for an acquisition. Starting with the S&P 500, we narrowed the list to companies trading at forward P/E ratios of 14 or less — half Nvidia's valuation. Actually, we rounded down, so the list was confined to stocks trading at a forward P/E of less than 14.5. Then we sorted the list by expected sales-per-share CAGR from calendar 2024 through 2026, based on consensus estimates among analysts polled by FactSet. The stock soared last month after President Donald Trump announced investment agreements with Saudi Arabia to build data centers in the U.S., which lifted suppliers of related equipment. These have included higher-than-expected costs in its Medicare Advantage business, reports of a government investigation into possible healthcare fraud and the departure of Chief Executive Andrew Witty. But with the stock having tumbled 40% this year through Friday, with dividends reinvested, analysts working for brokerage and research firms believe the worst is over, with 21 out of 29 analysts polled by FactSet rating UnitedHealth a buy or the equivalent. Only three of the analysts rate the stock a sell or the equivalent.
