Yahoo24-07-2025
A 6-year-old girl from Texas is being praised for saving her mom's life after calling 911 during a dog attack.
On Thursday, July 17, authorities responded to a call at about 7:40 a.m. local time to a home on Carla Drive in Denison about a reported dog attack, the Denison Police Department said on Facebook. When officers arrived at the address, they saw a woman being attacked by two dogs, who then charged at the officers when they got out of their vehicle.
'To neutralize the threat, officers were forced to use their firearm, resulting in the death of one of the dogs,' police said. 'The other dog ran inside the home.'
The woman, later identified by her family as Lindsay Stroup, was taken to a local hospital with 'serious injuries.' Animal Services arrived later to capture the second dog.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Denison Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further comment.
Stroup and her young daughter, Lily Goligowski, were watching the two dogs for a friend when the animals began fighting each other, CBS affiliate WLKY reported. Then the dogs turned on Stroup.
'Even if you think you know these animals, they can still hit, flip a switch without you even being aware of that switch being inside of them,' Thomas Goligowski, Lily's dad, told the outlet.
The little girl saw her mom rolling on the ground during the attack before taking Lindsay's cell phone and locking herself in the bathroom. Then, she called 911, WLKY reported.
'She definitely saved her mom's life," said Thomas, according to the outlet.
Minutes later, police arrived at the scene, and one officer administered care to Lindsay before she was transported to the hospital, where she's had several surgeries, WLKY reported.
Lindsay's loved ones have created a GoFundMe as she recovers. The organizer also commended Lily's actions.

'Lindsay is a mother of a beautiful 6-year-old daughter, and without her daughter's bravery in calling the cops during the attack, Lindsay wouldn't have made it,' wrote the organizer, who did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
According to the donation page, Lindsay was able to open her eyes at one point. But, as of Wednesday, July 23, she had to be put back on a ventilator and dialysis.
After the terrifying attack, Lily told her dad that everything would work out.
' 'Dad, Mom's going to be okay. I know Mom's going to be okay,' " Thomas recalled his daughter saying to him, according to WLKY.

In an email to PEOPLE, the Georgia State Patrol said that according to preliminary information, a trooper was dispatched at 9:06 p.m. local time to a two-vehicle crash on Georgia State Route 133 at Hopewell Church Road. Authorities found that a Ford Mustang driven by White was traveling south on 133 in the left lane, while a Kia Sportage operated by Anderson had stopped at the intersection of Hopewell Church Road and GA-133. 'The Mustang…was traveling at an excessively high rate of speed, estimated to be 100+ visually by a Colquitt County Sheriff's Deputy who was traveling north on Ga. 133,' the Georgia State Patrol said. 'The Deputy turned around to attempt to initiate a traffic stop on the Mustang for speeding but was unable to pull out immediately because of traffic southbound.' 'As the Mustang approached Hopewell Church Road, the Kia Sportage … entered into Ga. 133 and was struck in the left side by the front of the Ford Mustang,' the agency's statement continued. 'An artist at heart, she found joy in arts and crafts, always working with her hands and inspiring those around her with her imagination and talent,' the obituary read. 'She especially loved butterflies, which to her symbolized transformation, beauty, and the gentle presence of God's hand in all things.' A GoFundMe launched to pay for her funeral and help her kids stated that Anderson was her three sons' sole caregiver and provider. Explosion at steel plant leaves one dead and dozens hurt

An explosion at a US Steel plant near Pittsburgh left one dead and dozens injured or trapped under the rubble on Monday, with emergency workers on site trying to rescue victims, officials said. The explosion sent black smoke spiralling into the midday sky in the Monongahela Valley, a region of the state synonymous with steel for more than a century. An Allegheny County emergency services spokesperson, Kasey Reigner, said one person died in the explosion and two were currently believed to be unaccounted for. Multiple other people were treated for injuries, Ms Reigner said. Allegheny County Emergency Services said a fire at the plant started around 10.51am. The explosion sent a shock through the community and led to officials asking residents to stay away from the scene so emergency workers could respond. 'It felt like thunder,' Zachary Buday, a construction worker near the scene, told WTAE-TV. 'Shook the scaffold, shook my chest, and shook the building, and then when we saw the dark smoke coming up from the steel mill and put two and two together, and it's like something bad happened.' Dozens were injured and the county was sending 15 ambulances, on top of the ambulances supplied by local emergency response agencies, Ms Reigner said.

Boston Sheriff Allegedly Used Position to Extort $50K from Cannabis Company — Now He Faces Federal Charges

Sheriff Steven Tompkins is accused of using his position to extort a cannabis company for discounted shares of its stockNEED TO KNOW The Suffolk County Sheriff in Massachusetts faces federal extortion charges, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday, Aug. 8 Sheriff Steven Tompkins is accused of using his position to extort a cannabis company for discounted shares of its stock Tompkins is also alleged to have asked for a full refund of his investment when the stock didn't pan outA Boston area sheriff faces up to 20 years in prison after he was indicted Friday, Aug. 8, on federal charges alleging he extorted a cannabis dispensary over the course of several years. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts announced the federal extortion charges against Suffolk County Sheriff Steven Tompkins, 67, alleging that he threatened to derail a national cannabis company's local Boston business license if one of its top executives didn't help him procure $50,000 worth of discounted stock in the business before it became publicly traded. U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley said in a statement that Tompkins is 'alleged to have extorted an executive from a cannabis company, using his official position as Sheriff to benefit himself' in a scheme that began in mid-2020. In order for the company to operate in Boston, state law required it to take part in its state rehabilitation program. To do so, the company worked in partnership with the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office, which helped refer former inmates to work at the dispensary — which helped fulfill the state requirement. According to the federal indictment filed Friday in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts, Tompkins allegedly learned the company was looking to become a publicly traded company on the stock market and extorted his way into $50,000 worth of discounted stock prices by allegedly 'reminding' a company executive that the sheriff's office's help was needed to keep the company in business. 'It is alleged that [the company executive] believed and feared that Tompkins would use his official position as Sheriff to jeopardize [the company's] partnership with the [sheriff's office] and thus imperil both the dispensary license for [the company], as well as the timing of the IPO,' the Justice Department wrote in a news release Friday announcing the indictment. Tompkins' $50,000 investment netted him 28,883 shares of discounted company stock. At the stock's height, the sheriff's investment rose up to $138,403. But when the stock dipped in May 2022, and Tompkins began losing money on his investment, the Justice Department alleges the sheriff demanded a full refund on his $50,000 investment. 'Despite the decrease in the value of Tompkins's investment, [the company executive] agreed to Tompkins's demands for full repayment of $50,000,' according to the Justice Department. The federal extortion charge against Tompkins carries 'a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000,' the Justice Department said. Ted E. Docks, a Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division, said in a statement that the allegations against Tompkins are 'beyond disappointing.''We believe what the Sheriff saw as an easy way to make a quick buck on the sly is clear cut corruption under federal law,' Docks said.
