Lohore snubs Kubanza ahead of BRAVE CF 94

The heat in BRAVE Combat Federation's super welterweight division just got turned up a notch. On Thursday, 15 March, a fiery video dropped on the official BRAVE CF Instagram page featuring none other than Alex 'Da Killa King' Lohoré and, while fans eagerly waited for him to address top contender Eliezer 'King Kong' Kubanza by name, Lohoré made it crystal clear that won't be happening any time soon. 'Does he have followers? Do people know him around the world? What does this fight do for me?' Lohoré scoffed in the video. 'I don't have a lot of years left in my career, so I only want big fights. That fight is not a big fight. The guy doesn't have no following. The guy doesn't have no one. No one knows the guy. Which is why I'm not going to mention his name. I'm going to let you guys mention his name.' It's the latest chapter in a simmering rivalry that's quietly been brewing between two of Africa's top super welterweights. Proudly representing Ivory Coast and boasting a 25- 11 record, Lohoré has made a statement since joining BRAVE CF, winning both of his promotional bouts via first-round stoppages. He now heads into his third appearance at BRAVE CF 94 in Switzerland this Saturday, 17 May against the dangerous Mansur Abdurzakov. But while Lohoré is dialed in on Abdurzakov, the shadow of Eliezer Kubanza looms large. The undefeated Congolese prospect has been campaigning for a fight with Lohoré since 'Da Killa King' arrived in BRAVE CF, believing a clash between the two African standouts would be massive for the continent and the promotion as a whole. Kubanza, sitting at 7-0 with six knockout victories, remains one of BRAVE CF's fastest-rising stars. Following a gutsy unanimous decision win at BRAVE CF 91, 'King Kong' claimed the No. 1 contender spot in the division. The title is currently held by Luiz Cado, but both Kubanza and Lohoré have it in their sights. Lohoré, however, remains defiant when it comes to Kubanza. 'Eagles don't fly with pigeons,' he quipped when previously asked about Kubanza. Furthermore, the highly-experienced Lohoré insisted that there was only one scenario where he would ever share a cage with Kubanza - if championship gold is on the line. Adding to the intrigue of it all, rumours have begun swirling that Kubanza might be in attendance this weekend in Switzerland for BRAVE CF 94. A potential face-off between the two would only escalate tensions in a division already rich with explosive talent. Should Lohoré pick up a third straight finish at BRAVE CF 94, the promotion will be faced with a mouthwatering dilemma: does 'Da Killa King' leapfrog Kubanza for the next title shot, or does BRAVE CF finally pull the trigger on what could be one of the biggest all-African showdowns in promotional history? After the unforgettable Nkosi Ndebele vs. Nicholas Hwende clash at BRAVE CF 91, the idea of another continental collision — this time Ivory Coast vs. Democratic Republic of Congo — is one that fight fans across Africa and beyond would rally behind. For now, Lohoré won't say Kubanza's name. But, with BRAVE CF 94 just hours away and a rumoured appearance from 'King Kong' looming, the fight world may soon be calling for this matchup louder than ever.

A symphony of cultures

melissa@ One of Bahrain's oldest choirs and young talents at a local university will come together as one voice for their debut collaboration, Chorus of Cultures, a spectacular musical concert set to be staged on May 23. Formed more than 50 years ago, Manama Singers, together with the RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Choir, will take enthusiasts on an exciting journey through language, rhythm, and harmony, across continents and cultures, conjuring an 'unforgettable evening of musical unity'. The two-hour concert presented by more than 70 singers will tell tales from around the world, presenting a rich tapestry of global choral and solo music – from the soulful call of African folk melodies to the dramatic flair of classical arias and the groove of contemporary popular hits. 'Manama Singers were looking for a conductor at the end of 2024, as our regular conductor Jo Dichiolla was taking some time out. We were lucky enough to find an exciting new conductor, South African Stefan Els, who is also the conductor and founder of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Choir,' Manama Singers chairperson Susan Scott told GulfWeekly. 'We started rehearsing a number of South African songs and then Stefan suggested a combined concert, which we thought was a wonderful idea. The concert, being multinational and cultural, grew to showcase different songs, but was also named so because both choirs have a remarkable number of nationalities,' she added. Manama Singers, which celebrated its golden jubilee three years ago, comprises more than 40 members across nationalities, including English, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, French, Italian, German, Swiss, Swedish, American, Indian, Pakistani, Malaysian, Kiwi (New Zealand), Jordanian, Lebanese and Zambian. RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Choir, formed last year, currently has 32 members. 'Teaching African songs was a particularly fun challenge,' choirs'conductor and RCSI Bahrain data analyst Stefan revealed. 'Getting everyone to learn the words, rhythms, and accompanying movements was a steep but rewarding learning curve,' he added. 'Manama Singers were initially quite hesitant to let go of their choir folders and memorise the music, but they have overcome that with great dedication.' This is the first time Manama Singers will be presenting without sheet music – printed notations meant to guide the performer about pitch, rhythm and other elements. 'While we've been rehearsing since mid-January, we've only had two combined weekend rehearsals, each about four hours long. We had to get creative with our rehearsal spaces at RCSI. Practising on staircases helped with acoustics, and the altos even worked on their projection techniques in a car park at one point,' the 34-year-old from Al Sayh, who has been living in Bahrain for the last six years, said, highlighting some memorable moments behind the scenes. US expatriate Amanda Pilmer, who moved to the kingdom in August last year, shared her experience and excitement for the show. 'It's been great meeting all these new people, who are so welcoming. I'm a mum of two so, spending that one day a week rehearsing has given me an outlet,' the 40-year-old from Adliya said, adding that she will be presenting some solo acts at the concert. The event will commence at 7pm at Downtown Rotana in Manama.

Sharjah Architecture Triennial 2026 appoints curators

Sharjah Architecture Triennial (SAT) has announced Vyjayanthi Rao as curator of its third edition (SAT03), joined by Tau Tavengwa as associate curator. Taking place in 2026, the Triennial is a platform for architecture and urbanism from West Asia to South Asia and the African continent. An anthropologist, writer, artist, and curator based in New York and Mumbai, Rao brings a multidisciplinary perspective and a deep sensitivity to context in her work. With a background in socio-cultural anthropology, her writing has contributed significantly to critical discourse on urbanism and the built environment, with a focus on India and the United States, and her practice increasingly bridges research and public engagement. For SAT03, Rao works closely with London and Cape Town-based architect, curator, and publisher Tavengwa, continuing a rich dialogue that began with their curatorial collaboration for the 2022 Lisbon Architecture Triennale. Tavengwa is the founder and editor of Cityscapes Magazine, a publication dedicated to exploring urbanism from a Global South perspective, and the co-founder of CS Studio, an interdisciplinary urbanism studio. Mona El-Mousfy, advisor for the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, commented: "We are thrilled to have Vyjayanthi Rao as curator for our upcoming edition. Her deep knowledge of urbanism, with her particular focus on South Asian cities and neighborhoods, brings invaluable insight to the project. With her background in anthropology and her research-driven approach, she will undoubtedly offer a fresh perspective to this edition. "Vyjayanthi has invited her long-time collaborator, Tau Tavengwa, to join as associate curator. Tau is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of the field and reimagining the architecture Triennial model alongside her." The curators will collaborate closely with the Triennial team to build on its ongoing initiatives in the public realm, drawing on its deep knowledge of the city and community networks, while contributing broader perspectives on architecture's role in shaping more sustainable, inclusive, and responsive cities. Aligning with the Sharjah Architecture Triennial's focus on process as a means of idea generation, Rao and Tavengwa invite SAT03 to adopt a propositional, rather than representational, approach. Rao and Tau said: "We are hugely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such an important and distinctive platform as the Sharjah Architecture Triennial. Through our collaboration, we hope to open up new ways of thinking about what a triennial like Sharjah can become over time - leaving behind tangible strategies and ideas that respond to the needs and challenges of contemporary urban centres across the Global South and beyond." Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, commente: "Rao's practice, which offers vital insights into urbanisation, aligns with the context of SAT and Sharjah's ongoing urban transformation. Her work speaks directly to the Triennial's mission in terms of our commitment to research, innovation and knowledge-sharing, and we are excited to support both her and Tau in fostering a public-facing conversation around the critical, and complex, issues of today." On May 10, 2025, Sharjah Architecture Triennial will host "Meet the Curators of the 2026 SAT Edition," a public event at SAT headquarters, Al Qasimiyah School, marking the first official appearance of Vyjayanthi Rao and Tau Tavengwa as SAT03 curator and associate curator. This gathering will offer audiences a unique opportunity to engage with the newly appointed team as they share initial insights into their curatorial approach and vision for the upcoming edition. The conversation will unfold in dialogue with members of the SAT team, offering a first look into the conceptual framework shaping SAT03.
