Rugby Australia signs five-year broadcast rights deal with Nine
MELBOURNE, April 9 (Reuters) - Rugby Australia has signed a five-year extension to its broadcast rights deal with Nine Entertainment which will reward Wallabies wins with extra money.
The deal runs from 2026-2030, taking in the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the 2029 Women's Rugby World Cup, RA told Nine-owned newspapers.
"The continuation of this partnership is a significant step forward for rugby in Australia," RA chief executive Phil Waugh said.
Nine has not disclosed the terms of the deal, but its newspapers reported it is worth about A$210 million ($125 million) over five years.
That would be a substantial lift on Nine's previous deal, which was worth about A$150 million in cash and free advertising.
The deal includes a range of incentives related to the performance of teams, including a potential multi-million dollar cash bonus if the underperforming Wallabies win more matches, the Nine-owned Australian Financial Review said.
Nine has broadcast Wallabies tests and Super Rugby across its free-to-air platform and subscription streaming service, Stan, since 2020 when they picked up the rights for a discount during COVID-19 in a three-year deal worth about A$100 million.
Nine signed a two-year extension in 2023.

Brian O'Driscoll caught up in furious Michael Cheika incident on live TV The former Australia boss was absolutely incensed with the officials at Twickenham This was the moment a furious Michael Cheika approached Brian O'Driscoll. (Image: TNT SPORTS ) Ireland legend Brian O'Driscoll found himself caught up in the midst of a furious Michael Cheika rant in the Gallagher Premiership final. Bath faced Leicester Tigers in English rugby's showpiece event at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday afternoon, and Tigers boss Cheika was not happy with the officiating before half time. The clock was in the red with his side trailing by three points when he could be seen ranting and raving on the touchline. He initially headed down to one of his staff members to escort him away from speaking with a match official. After that, Cheika was visibly incensed and spoke with venom as he watched the game unfold. As he made his way back to the stands, the Australian could be seen approaching TNT Sports pundit O'Driscoll before walking off. The Irishman did not respond, simply smiling as Cheika walked off. The TNT Sports commentary team were surprised by Cheika's reaction. "Michael Cheika is absolutely raging," began commentator Alastair Eykyn. Article continues below "Is that all about that final decision? This will be the final play of this first half. "We'll find out what the trouble is, because Brian is all over it!" You can watch this all unfold below. Content cannot be displayed without consent It was heartbreak for Wales internationals Tommy Reffell and Nicky Smith, who were on the losing Tigers side in the English capital as the game finished 23-21. The duo have been selected for the upcoming Wales squad set to tour Japan next month. Cheika joined Tigers on a one year deal in 2024, and while many fans may have hoped he would sign a new deal after a solid season in the English top flight, that isn't how it's played out. Article continues below The former Argentina head coach, who has also been touted as a candidate for the Wales head coach role, said he wanted to return home to Australia to prioritise his family in Sydney. In May, it was confirmed that former England international Geoff Parling would be replacing Cheika as head coach of Tigers. He's currently in an assistant role with Australia ahead of the British and Irish Lions tour this summer, but will join up with the club when his contract ends.

Thomas Frank gives green light to first Tottenham transfer with £30m deal close
Thomas Frank was named as Tottenham Hotspur's new head coach earlier this week and the first signing of the Dane's tenure is close to being agreed after fresh transfer talks Mathys Tel is poised to become the first signing of the Thomas Frank era at Tottenham, with the Frenchman in advanced talks to make his loan move from Bayern Munich permanent. Tel, 20, joined Spurs on loan in the January transfer window in a deal with an option for €50million (£42.5m). The versatile forward scored three times in 20 appearances, though the manager who signed him, Ange Postecoglou, is no longer at the helm. Tottenham's decision to replace the Australian with Frank has had no bearing on a permanent move, though, with the club and Bayern now close to an agreement. As outlined by Sky Sport Germany, Tottenham are set to pay around €35m (£30m) to keep Tel after negotiating fresh terms with the German giants, with Frank keen on retaining the forward's services. And it's claimed that the France Under-21 star is also happy to make the switch permanent after getting a taste of life in the Premier League over the last six months. Max Eberl, the Bayern sporting director, confirmed that talks over a deal were ongoing with Tottenham earlier this week amid talk that an agreement was close. "Mathys was at Tottenham for six months. He wanted to play in the U21 European championship with France, and we allowed him to," he said, per Abendzeitung München. "We're talking to Tottenham, that's no secret. We'll see how that pans out." Frank is expected to be backed in the transfer market after signing a three-year contract to become the club's new head coach with more additions likely. Mirror Football revealed that the Dane would love to take Bryan Mbeumo with him to Tottenham despite interest in the Cameroon international from Manchester United. Spurs have since launched a £70m bid - consisting of £65m with a further £5m in add-ons - in a bid to gazump United, though it's understood that Old Trafford remains Mbeumo's preferred destination. Spurs have also been linked with Yoane Wissa after prising Frank away from Brentford. The DR Congo and Mbeumo racked up 38 Premier League goals between them for the Bees last season and would instantly boost Tottenham's firepower. Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo is also of interest to Spurs; the Ghana international has other top-flight suitors including Manchester United and is said to be valued by the Cherries at around £70m. The ex-Celtic treble winning boss has reportedly been looked at by clubs in England and in Europe after his sacking. Now the Telegraph report Saudi side Al-Ahli want to bring the Aussie in if their manager decides to move on - although former Barcelona icon Xavi is also on the Saudi side's shortlist. The Riyadh side, who have stars such as Ivan Toney, Riyad Mahrez and Roberto Firmino on their books, would offer Postecoglou big money to join. Their current boss, Matthias Jaissle, has been attracting interest of his own with the 37-year-old coach being looked at by clubs in Europe, including RB Leipzig. The German was also linked to the West Ham job before the London club appointed ex-Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter. Postecoglou is accustomed to Asian football already with his experiences in Japan with Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan. He also won the Asian Cup in his spell as the Australia manager, whilst also guiding them to World Cup qualification in 2014. The Aussie bid an emotional farewell to Spurs fans after it was announced he'd been shown the door. BBC star shares shock theory as to why Tottenham waited exactly 16 days after Europa League win to sack Ange Postecoglou He said: "When I reflect on my time as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. "Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. "That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. "There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. "We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 7 more years for their next success. "I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. "I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. "I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. "It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. "And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. "A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. "We are forever connected.
