Don't turn a deaf ear to credible views from the public

I REFER to the letter 'Help riders earn a living without risking their lives' by Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, chairman of Alliance for a Safe Community (The Star, July 19). While I highly commend Lee's ideas and the depth of his analysis, I often find myself wondering whether our authorities genuinely pay attention to such valuable public insights.
This apparent disregard for public opinion, I believe, is a missed opportunity to build stronger relationships between the public and the authorities. It's a fundamental principle of public relations that engagement and responsiveness foster trust.

North Korea says South Korea's overtures 'great miscalculation'

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visits the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs Cemetery, to mark the 72nd anniversary of the victory in the Fatherland Liberation War, in Pyongyang, North Korea, in this picture released by the Korean Central News Agency on July 27, 2025. KCNA via REUTERS SEOUL (Reuters) -North Korea has no interest in any policy or proposals for reconciliation from South Korea, the powerful sister of its leader Kim Jong Un said on Monday in the first response to South Korean liberal President Lee Jae Myung's peace overtures. Kim Yo Jong, who is a senior North Korean ruling party official and is believed to speak for the country's leader, said Lee's pledge of commitment to South Korea-U.S. security alliance shows he is no different from his hostile predecessor. "If South Korea expects to reverse all the consequences of (its actions) with a few sentimental words, there could be no greater miscalculation than that," Kim said in comments carried by official KCNA news agency. Lee, who took office on June 4 after winning a snap election called after the removal of hardline conservative Yoon Suk Yeol over a failed attempt at martial law, has vowed to improve ties with Pyongyang that had reached the worst level in years. In one measure aimed at easing tensions, Lee suspended loudspeaker broadcasts blasting anti-North propaganda across the border and banned the flying of leaflets by activists that had angered Pyongyang. Kim, the North Korean official, said those moves are merely a reversal of ill-intentioned activities by South Korea that should never have been initiated in the first place. "In other words, it's not even something worth our assessment," she said. "We again make clear the official position that whatever policy is established in Seoul or proposal is made, we are not interested, and we will not be sitting down with South Korea and there is nothing to discuss." Exercising their right: Protesters gathering during the Turun Anwar rally at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. — AZHAR MAHFOF/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: Crowds gathered at five major points in the capital city, calling for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to step down as Prime Minister as they voiced their discontent over his leadership. Despite the rain and haze, the demonstrators grouped at Sogo shopping mall, Masjid Negara, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad and Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru before marching to Dataran Merdeka. The grievances at the Turun Anwar rally yesterday ranged from 'dishonoured promises' to taxes, and what they deemed were failed reforms and political intimidation by the government. Chants of 'Turun Anwar' were heard in Bahasa Malaysia, Tamil and Chinese. Among those who addressed the rally was former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He challenged Anwar to take him to court if he is wrong in the Batu Puteh issue. 'This country has courts, judges and public prosecutors. But Anwar did not use these,' he said. 'You are not a judge, you are a prime minister. You cannot decide who is guilty. Only the judges can determine whether I am wrong or not,' he said. Dr Mahathir spoke of how he had resigned from office when he lost the support of his party, not even the people. Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin accused Anwar of not being mindful to the plight of Malaysians. 'The value of the ringgit has dropped but the cost of goods has gone up,' he said. Perikatan secretary-general Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said the rally was an early signal that the Anwar administration would fall. Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin warned that more assemblies would come. 'We do not want RM100, Anwar. We want Anwar to step down,' he said, referring to the cash aid announced on Wednesday. PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said they had gathered 'to take down a leader who has not fulfilled his promises'. Among the attendees was restaurant manager Mohd Amri Ismadi, who drove from Ipoh. 'Everyday has been a struggle, especially in recent years. We are expected to tighten our belt. 'Do we have to cut corners until we lose what remains of our modest life?' said Mohd Amri, who is in his 30s. Store keeper Shamsul Safawi, 55, who attended the rally despite being unwell, said he wanted to add to the show of the people's discontent. 'What is most upsetting is the empty promises. I feel it is best he steps down and let other leaders take over, ' he said.

97 Miri groups receive RM601,100 in MRP grants to boost community development

Lee (second left) presents an MRP cheque for Musolla Al-Azhar of Lutong Fire Station, received by station chief Henry Jugah. MIRI (July 26): A total of 97 non-government organisations (NGO), associations, religious bodies, and clubs here have been awarded Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants amounting to RM601,100. The grants were presented by Sarawak Transport Minister and Senadin assemblyman, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, during a two-session ceremony today, due to the high number of recipients. In his speech, Lee emphasised the importance of unity and inclusivity, urging all people – regardless of race or background – to work together as one community. 'Unity among all Sarawakians is the most important factor in driving the state's continued development and prosperity,' he said. 'Whether you are Penan, Kelabit, Orang Ulu, Indian, Malay, or Chinese; if you are born and live here, you are Sarawakian,' he added. Lee noted that the MRP grants are meant to complement existing government programmes, particularly in promoting unity and creating more job and business opportunities. He also praised Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the state's ongoing infrastructure transformation, citing the successful completion of 16 bridges statewide. 'We now have 16 completed bridges fully funded by the Sarawak government – no more ferries, even long bridges over one kilometre have been built,' Lee said. He also announced that a 17th bridge has been approved for Miri, stretching 1,850 metres from Miri Golf Club to the Miri City Council area. 'Miri tidak kalah lah (Miri is not left behind),' Lee quipped. 'I told our Premier that Bintulu has its iconic bridge, so Miri deserves one too.' Lee also thanked the residents of Miri for their support in making the recent Sarawak Day celebration a success. 'All the events went smoothly with the cooperation of everyone. Well done to the people of Miri,' he said.
