Newcastle secure Champions League place despite final-day defeat to Everton

Rhyl Journal25-05-2025

Alcaraz's 65th-minute strike secured a 1-0 win on Tyneside and that, coupled with Chelsea's win at Nottingham Forest and 10-man Aston Villa's 2-0 defeat at Manchester United, left the Magpies in fifth place on goal difference.
On a day when victory would have been enough to end the tension, the Magpies were uncharacteristically nervy and imprecise, and the final whistle was greeted by joyous applause as a packed house of 52,221 celebrated not the result on the day, but the efforts which had secured a second trip to Europe's top table in three seasons and the Carabao Cup during an arduous campaign.
As an initial onslaught by the hosts abated, David Moyes' men worked their way into the game and Tino Livramento had to intercept James Garner's dangerous ninth-minute cross after Idrissa Gueye had cleverly played his team-mate in over the top.

With Gueye, Iliman Ndiaye and Alcaraz thriving in midfield, Everton were making life uncomfortable for the hosts at times and as Alexander Isak struggled to get himself into the game, chances were at a premium for Newcastle.
Nick Pope claimed Alcaraz's 22nd-minute free-kick with little fuss, but he was extended much further by Garner's swerving strike from distance two minutes later.
Harvey Barnes was unable to react quickly enough to make meaningful contact with Livramento's teasing cross at the far post after the wing-back had skipped past Jack Harrison down the left, but it took a fine double save from Jordan Pickford to deny first Sandro Tonali, then Isak 14 minutes before the break.
Pickford tipped over a Sven Botman header as it reared up off the turf and then repelled the defender's near-post shot as the Magpies forced a series of corners, but Pope had to be equally resilient to prevent Alcaraz's 39th-minute header from sneaking under his crossbar.
Joe Willock replaced Anthony Gordon before the restart and Eddie Howe shifted from a back three to a four, but his team were sloppy during the opening exchanges of the second half and Livramento survived penalty appeals after Harrison's cross appeared to strike his arm before Pope had to palm away another Alcaraz drive.

But concern mounted among the locals with 25 minutes remaining when Alcaraz rose to head Vitalii Mykolenko's cross past the stranded Pope to hand the visitors a deserved lead.
Pickford parried Isak's 68th-minute piledriver and then saw Fabian Schar and substitute Kieran Trippier fire inches wide as Newcastle felt the golden ticket slipping from their grasp, although news of Amad Diallo's goal at Old Trafford had raised spirits off the pitch significantly in the meantime.
A madcap conclusion to the game failed to yield a second goal – although Toffees substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Magpies skipper Bruno Guimaraes both went close in stoppage time – and both were able to celebrate for different reasons when referee Tony Harrington finally brought proceedings to a halt.

Scotland defender Nathan Patterson has been told he needs to play regular first-team football next season to remain in the conversation for a starting berth in head coach Steve Clarke's team. Patterson returned to the Scotland squad for the first time in more than a year last month when he was selected for the friendlies against Iceland on Friday night and then Liechtenstein in Vaduz on Monday. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Currently at Everton, Patterson has endured a wretched past year with injuries. The 23-year-old ruptured his hamstring in April 2024, ruling him out of last summer's European Championships, and it took him ten months to return to full fitness. Nathan Patterson is back in the Scotland squad. | SNS Group The former Rangers youngster was involved in some of Everton's end-of-season matches in the Premier League and under fellow Scot David Moyes is hoping for a fresh start after struggling for game-time when predecessor Sean Dyche was in charge. Capped 21 times already by Scotland, Patterson was earmarked as a key figure in the current Scotland set-up. However, he faces fierce competition at right-back, with Aaron Hickey returning from his own hamstring issues, Max Johnston performing well at Sturm Graz and Celtic's Anthony Ralston in possession of the starting slot right now. Clarke welcomed his return to the Scotland set-up, but wants him to get more minutes under his belt to assist his development as a player. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "He's had a tough time,' Clarke said of Patterson. 'We've been talking about it since he got his injury before the last Euros. It's been over a year since Nathan was in a Scotland squad. I've always been in touch with him. It hasn't gone smoothly for him at Everton. He'd be the first to agree with that. 'He hasn't had enough game-time, but recently towards the end of the season, he got a couple of games, which was nice to see. He did okay. He knows he has to play regularly next season to be involved going forward. He knows he has to play more regularly next season to develop his career and to become better. But it's nice to have Nathan back in the squad.' Patterson will hope to be involved against Iceland at Hampden, as will his fellow defender Kieran Tierney, who will land his 50th cap if selected. The 27-year-old's Scotland career has also been hamstrung by injury and is due to rejoin Celtic this summer after six years at Arsenal. Kieran Tierney is on the cusp of 50 caps for Scotland. | SNS Group 'Obviously, he's shown his worth,' said Clarke. 'His career, he's a top, top player. We're lucky to have him. In recent years, he's had one or two little injury issues that's probably restricted his number of caps. He's one of those players that we identified very early. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I remember going down to London to meet him. He'd just moved to Arsenal to speak to him about his role within the squad and what we expected from him. Since then, we've had a really good relationship. We should be grateful that we've got him. 'It doesn't stop at 50 and the caps keep coming. That's what I set out to do, to cap a number of players that would be the core of the squad moving forward. So many players in the squad now that are over 50. Kieran's just another one to add to that.'

Shattered footy star James Schiller reveals fan's sickening death threat in the middle of a game - as his teammate gets dragged into shocking homophobic abuse

Newcastle Knights star James Schiller has revealed the shocking online abuse he was subjected to on Thursday with his NRL side staring down the barrel of a big defeat, only to flip the script completely. Schiller, just 23 years old with only 27 first-grade appearances to his name, has exposed a string of vile messages he received following his team's dramatic comeback win over Manly. The abuse came despite Newcastle pulling off their biggest turnaround in 18 years, recovering from a 16-0 halftime deficit to claim a 26-22 golden point victory in front of their home fans. Schiller, who played out of position at left centre, was targeted both on the field and online after a tough first half defending against the likes of Daly Cherry-Evans, Reuben Garrick and Haumole Olakau'atu. Forced into unfamiliar territory, Schiller was heavily tested on his edge and finished the half with five errors, two penalties conceded and four missed tackles - leading some fans to harshly single him out for criticism. On social media, several accounts piled on, labelling him 'one of the worst NRL players I've ever seen,' and claiming he 'wouldn't stand out for Taree Turtles reserve grade.' Abuse aimed at young NRL players continues to spark debate around online behaviour and athlete mental health support But one message crossed well beyond the line of fair criticism, and Schiller decided to share it publicly. 'Count your days c*** I will end your f***ing life,' the message read, sent to his Instagram inbox early in the second half. Even after the Knights sealed victory, the same account continued to abuse him and add some shocking homophobic comments involving former Origin star Dane Gagai as well. 'Doesn't make up for it even though you won. 5 errors, 2 penalties, 1 six again and partridge in a pear tree I hope Dane [Gagai] jams his c*** down your throat and you choke and die.' Schiller posted screenshots of the messages to his Instagram story, drawing attention to the darker side of fan behaviour at a time when mental health support for young men and athletes is being heavily promoted across the country. The reaction from the broader rugby league community was swift and condemning, with many calling out the cruelty of the attack and its potential toll on a young player's wellbeing. 'You have to wonder how sad a life someone must have to react like this,' one fan posted in response. 'I don't condone this disgraceful post - this person should be banned and it shouldn't have even been posted,' another wrote. 'Pathetic individual, love him to say it to his face,' one comment read, while another called for the NRL or police to intervene. Despite the early pressure and personal mistakes, Schiller responded in remarkable fashion during the second half, scoring a vital try and producing four line breaks to help his team overturn the deficit. One fan summed up the dramatic turnaround, writing: 'James Schiller was preparing to paint lines on the street at half time. Then he came out like a fkn immortal in the second half.' 'James Schiller is good, actually,' another fan posted, acknowledging the winger's contribution to the remarkable win. The emotional rollercoaster was amplified by the hostile reaction from sections of the Newcastle crowd, who booed the team off the field at halftime. Newcastle coach Adam O'Brien was clearly frustrated by the jeering and didn't hold back in his post-match press conference. 'It's disappointing, it's really disappointing,' O'Brien said. 'I know the scoreline is not what they want, but to boo the effort that went into that first half from a really young team, the people that booed don't know anything about rugby league.' 'They're probably the ones that cheered at the end too and that really disappoints me because a lot of the first half we defended our hearts out.' 'I know people are disappointed with us, but they're trying their backsides off,' he added. However, club legend Matty Johns took a different view and defended the right of fans to express their frustration. 'Jeez that's a bit rough,' Johns said. 'Those Newcastle people, from days when I played right through and we used to get booed off sometimes - and you cop it because those fans turn up even when it's pissing rain, hail, or you're sitting bottom of the ladder, they always turn up. 'I think if they've paid their money and they've supported that side for so long, then I think they're entitled to air their grievances.' Newcastle's dramatic win came despite the fact that Thursday night marked the seventh time in 14 games this season where they went into halftime without scoring a point - a worrying trend this season. NRL Immortal Andrew Johns, calling the game for the Nine Network, didn't sugar-coat his assessment, describing the first-half effort as 'hard to watch' amid a string of errors and missed opportunities.

Arsenal 'considering' bargain transfer for forgotten Chelsea record breaker

Arsenal are considering a summer move for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga who has just returned from his Bournemouth loan spell and is available in a cut-price deal Arsenal are weighing up a potential move for Kepa Arrizabalaga - who could end his Chelsea stint for a minimal fee after his loan spell away at Bournemouth. Kepa helped the Cherries post an impressive ninth place finish in the Premier League, but his time with the Blues has looked over for several years. They've continued to loan him out, first to Real Madrid and then to Bournemouth as he eyes a new permanent home. ‌ Sky in Italy report that a release clause in his contract could make him available for just £5million and Arsenal are considering raiding their London rivals. David Raya is the clear No 1 at the Emirates but beyond him there is no obvious understudy. ‌ Last term the likes of Neto and youngster Jack Porter deputised for Raya in the Carabao Cup, but Kepa could bring plenty of experience to north London and bolster Arsenal's goalkeeping ranks. The player himself previously claimed showdown talks were scheduled to decide on his next move. He said: 'Obviously what I can say is that I'm really happy and I'm enjoying my playing time here. I think I'm showing that and I'm feeling well on the pitch. "It's not the time to think about the future, we're going to take the decision, we're in touch with everybody and now I'm under contract with Chelsea. We have some conversations to have, they will happen in the next few weeks and then we'll decide.' It would mark the end of an underwhelming spell at Chelsea for the Spaniard who remains the most expensive goalkeeper in history. He moved from Athletic Bilbao to Stamford Bridge in 2018 for just over £70million but ultimately couldn't deliver on that mammoth fee. He claimed numerous European honours with the Blues, but was only a substitute for the Champions League success back in 2021. Months later Kepa did come off the bench in the 119th minute to help Chelsea win the UEFA Super Cup on penalties. ‌ The Blues themselves could well change their goalkeeping landscape this summer. Currently Enzo Maresca has Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and Djordje Petrovic at his disposal, but neither of them have been able to make the position their own. As a result the Blues have begun pursuing AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who could leave for just £25m this month, as discussions are held. The 29-year old has one year left on contract and previously played for PSG and Lille before joining Milan, who only have him tied down on a deal until 2026.
