Tunisia: Reconstruction of public transport under focus as President of Republic meets Transport Minister
Tunis: President Kais Saied met on Monday Minister of Transport, Rachid Amri, at the Carthage Palace.
During the meeting, the Head of State discussed the reconstruction of the public transport sector, particularly the imminent arrival of new buses to alleviate citizens' commuting hardships while awaiting the full restoration of this system, which has been nearly dismantled nationwide, according to a statement from the Presidency.
Rhe Head of State ordered remove all obstacles to ensure these buses arrive in Tunisia as soon as possible. The meeting also addressed the ongoing issues at Tunisair, including recent disruptions to flight schedules.
President Kais Saied emphasised the need for structural reforms to restore the prestige of this historic national carrier, asserting that its privatisation is non-negotiable, despite some openly advocating for it.
He similarly ruled out relocating Tunis-Carthage International Airport, as it had been canvassed some time ago.
The Head of State concluded by affirming that Tunisia's public companies and establishments are not for sale, declaring that Tunisair will remain a source of national pride, excelling in air and ground services. He stressed that Tunisia is waging a war of national liberation, where the country's supreme interest must override all other considerations.

Tunisia: Launch of business competitveness support and citizens economic empowerment programme announced
Tunis - Minister of Employment and Vocational Training Riadh Chaoued announced on Wednesday in Tunis the launch of a programme to support business competitiveness and the economic empowerment of citizens through job creation. While presiding over the signing of an agreement with the Tunisian Solidarity Bank, the Minister explained that the programme is financed by a €90 million loan agreed between Tunisia and the African Development Bank (AfDB) in September 2024. It aims to contribute to job creation and support economic and social integration by improving the employability of job seekers and developing their skills through complementary training and entrepreneurship support. It will also support the establishment of a self-employment system and develop and support institutional capacities to improve governance of employment, training and support programmes. He explained that the programme consists of several elements, most notably an agreement with the Tunisian Solidarity Bank providing approximately €50 million in funding to establish around 13,000 enterprises between 2025 and 2027. He added: 'The programme is ambitious and has important social and economic dimensions. It aims to support enterprises and empower citizens economically by creating decent jobs', emphasising that the Ministry is adopting a new results-based approach to its work. The Minister of Employment explained that funding is now conditional on achieving specific indicators relating to complementary training, self-employment and the establishment of enterprises. He warned that if these targets are not met, the funds will not be transferred. He pointed out that this new approach stems from past lessons, when Tunisia suffered from loans that were misused or simply consumed, and explained that the current vision is based on only resorting to loans if they are directed towards achieving concrete development goals. The Minister of Employment said the programme to support the competitiveness of enterprises and the economic empowerment of citizens is not only for new enterprises, but also for existing enterprises that are experiencing difficulties and require financing or equipment to continue their activities and preserve jobs. He added that the conditions for accessing financing are favourable, as project initiators are not required to provide self-financing and will not be charged interest on loans for up to 19 years. He said he believed that these and other incentives will encourage young people and owners of small and medium-sized enterprises, whether new or existing, to start afresh or expand their activities. The minister announced that the programme will launch on June 16 and those wishing to apply for funding can submit their applications to the Tunisian Solidarity Bank and its regional branches. He added that the ministry is working to ensure the first batch of enterprises will receive funding in the same week. 'The types of projects will be open to all fields, and it is important that they be economically viable and capable of creating or preserving jobs,' Chouaed underscored, noting that new projects or business expansions may include agriculture, industry, services, cultural industries, and more. The minister emphasised that the new direction of the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training reflects a shift in its role. It is no longer solely concerned with traditional training and employment; it has also become a direct supporter of the economic fabric by financing small and medium-sized enterprises and creating job opportunities. He explained that this change is due to the commitment to the July 25, 2022 constitution, which considers work to be a constitutional right. Tunisia: Small Cabinet meeting focuses on preparations for 2025-2026 agricultural season
Tunis - A small Cabinet meeting was held on Tuesday at the Government Palace in Kasbah, chaired by Prime Minister Sara Zaafrani Zenzri, to review preparations for the 2025-2026 agricultural season and ensure optimal conditions for its successful launch. It was decided in this regard to accelerate fertiliser stockpiling to fully cover the needs of the 2025-2026 season while maintaining current chemical fertiliser prices. This falls within the state's social role to help farmers acquire supplies at reasonable prices and control production costs. This is besides streamlining financing procedures for all the 2025-2026 agricultural season-related activities, while ensuring adequate energy supply for chemical fertiliser storage centres, their safety, and equitable distribution in the domestic market. The Cabinet also decided, according to a Prime Ministry statement to organise a training session in June 2025 by the Sectoral Centre for Transport and Logistics Training in Borj Cedria (under the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training) for hazardous materials truck drivers. This training is mandatory under Law No. 37 of 1997 (June 2, 1997) concerning hazardous material road transport, which prohibits ammonia transport without proper certification. It was also decided to immediately implement the 'Engrais' digital platform to modernise agricultural sector monitoring, enabling end-to-end tracking of fertiliser distribution from producer to final consumer, while ensuring all stakeholders have access. During this meeting, the latest agricultural indicators and the results of the previous season were discussed, evaluated and analysed. The preparations for the 2025–26 season were also presented, focusing on the challenges facing the agricultural sector and how to invest in it. The most important data related to the progress of preparations for this season at all levels was also presented. In this context, plans for supplying chemical fertilisers were presented. After assessing the local market supply during the 2024–25 agricultural season and defining the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries' fertiliser needs for the 2025–26 season, the meeting focused on the technical and logistical preparations underway to supply the market during this season and to meet the demand for chemical fertilisers, such as agricultural ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphate and triple superphosphate. This is being coordinated with the Tunisian Chemical Group, the producer of these materials, to ensure farmers have access to the necessary production inputs. At the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister urged ministers to coordinate their efforts more closely with regional and local structures, as well as with all stakeholders in the agricultural and industrial sectors, in order to double production and build up strategic stockpiles of chemical fertilisers. She emphasised the importance of ensuring that all safety conditions are met and all preventive measures are taken.
