Musk's Tunnel Company Being Considered For $8.5 Billion Amtrak Project

Last week, Elon Musk's The Boring Company (TBC) announced that it has been continuously mining in a Zero-People-in-Tunnel (ZPIT) configuration, which in Musk speak, means that his tunneling company has been continually digging a tunnel to cater to its futuristic Tesla robotaxi underground transport system.
And thanks to Musk's ties, or dare we say, favors that he's earned with certain government agencies through his DOGE activities and others, his The Boring Company is now being considered for a major multi-billion-dollar Amtrak project.
According to the New York Times, federal regulators are in talks with his tunneling company to see whether TBC could save money on the Frederick Douglass Tunnel program which is being built to connect Baltimore to Washington and Virginia. Estimates for the project started at $6 billion but have ballooned out to $8.5 billion with rising material costs. A
While The Boring Company is one of a number of corporations to being considered for this new Amtrak contract, the discussions raise an alarming number of red flags about Musk's multiple conflicts of interest as he splits his time between Tesla, TBC, SpaceX/Starlink and X, his role as President Trump's right-hand man, and as master overseer of DOGE, which has cut resources to agencies that are supposed to regulate his companies.
The Boring Company shared videos of its ZPIT configuration and explained why this is a huge milestone.
The Boring Company (TBC) says its mission is to create, safe, fast-to-dig, low cost transportation (tunnels) with its main purpose to alleviate traffic congestion and enable rapid point-to-point mobility.
Musk says that to solve traffic issues, roads must go 3D, which means either flying cars or tunnels are needed. 'Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weatherproof, out of sight, and don't conflict with existing transport networks,' he added. His philosophy is to be commended, but the reality appears to be different. Please read on.
Just to put things into perspective with what we know now, the level of the project that appears to have impressed Amtrak officials is Musk's so-called 'Loop' in Las Vegas. This Loop has in fact, already been realized—to a limited extent—with the first all-electric, zero emissions tunnel system located at the Las Vegas Convention Center—making it the first commercially operating Loop system that will eventually, according to TBC, be able to travel at speeds of up to 150 mph. The Las Vegas tunnel may only be 1.7 miles long at present, but even that achievement has been enough to grab the attention of Amtrak.
But to play the devil's advocate, we have been hearing about The Boring Co.'s tunnels for over seven years now, and development has been painfully slow. Many readers may recall news of Musk's first tunnel foray when he invited journalists back in 2018 to test-ride his one mile-plus long tunnel section—the so-called L.A. transit tunnel—from which many media came away unimpressed due to the rough ride. Musk later explained that the tunnel was a prototype and that the surface would eventually be smoothed to resemble cruising on glass.

Revenue jumped 24% year-over-year (YOY) to $2 billion, fueled by active trading and demand for Coinbase One. EPS came in at $0.24, missing estimates, while adjusted net income slipped 23% to $1.94 per share, leaving Wall Street hoping for a stronger beat. Transaction revenue rose 18% to $1.3 billion, while consumer trading volume hit $78 billion, up 39% YOY despite a sequential dip. Institutional flow reached $315 billion, also up annually. Subscriptions and services jumped 36% to $698.1 million, powered by stablecoin traction and user loyalty. April alone brought in $240 million in transaction revenue, hinting at a potentially stronger Q2 ahead. Building on its momentum, Coinbase spotlighted the $2.9 billion Deribit acquisition as a bold step into global derivatives, aligning with CEO Brian Armstrong's vision to unite spot, futures, and options. Bernstein sees Coinbase as wildly misunderstood and severely underpriced. With solid earnings upgrades, a fading bear case, and regulatory tailwinds like the GENIUS Act, the analyst believes COIN is now the "Amazon of crypto financial services." Unemployment among young college graduates outpaces overall US joblessness rate

WASHINGTON (AP) — While completing a master's degree in data analysis, Palwasha Zahid moved from Dallas to a town near Silicon Valley. The location made it easy to visit the campuses of tech stalwarts such as Google, Apple, and Nvidia. Zahid, 25, completed her studies in December, but so far she hasn't found a job in the industry that surrounds her. 'It stings a little bit,' she said. 'I never imagined it would be this difficult just to get a foot in the door.' Young people graduating from college this spring and summer are facing one of the toughest job markets in more than a decade. The unemployment rate for degree holders ages 22 to 27 has reached its highest level in a dozen years, excluding the coronavirus pandemic. Joblessness among that group is now higher than the overall unemployment rate, and the gap is larger than it has been in more than three decades. The rise in unemployment has worried many economists as well as officials at the Federal Reserve because it could be an early sign of trouble for the economy. It suggests businesses are holding off on hiring new workers because of rampant uncertainty stemming from the Trump administration's tariff increases, which could slow growth. 'Young people are bearing the brunt of a lot of economic uncertainty,' Brad Hersbein, senior economist at the Upjohn Institute, a labor-focused think tank, said. 'The people that you often are most hesitant in hiring when economic conditions are uncertain are entry-level positions.' The growth of artificial intelligence may be playing an additional role by eating away at positions for beginners in white-collar professions such as information technology, finance, and law. Higher unemployment for younger graduates has also renewed concerns about the value of a college degree. More workers than ever have a four-year degree, which makes it less of a distinguishing factor in job applications. Murat Tasci, an economist at JPMorgan, calculates that 45% of workers have a four-year degree, up from 26% in 1992. While the difficulty of finding work has demoralized young people like Zahid, most economists argue that holding a college degree still offers clear lifetime benefits. Graduates earn higher pay and experience much less unemployment over their lifetimes. The overall U.S. unemployment rate is a still-low 4.2%, and the government's monthly jobs reports show the economy is generating modest job gains. But the additional jobs are concentrated in health care, government, and restaurants and hotels. Job gains in professions with more college grads, such as information technology, legal services, and accounting have languished in the past 12 months. The unemployment rate has stayed low mostly because layoffs are still relatively rare. The actual hiring rate — new hires as a percentage of all jobs — has fallen to 2014 levels, when the unemployment rate was much higher, at 6.2%. Economists call it a no-hire, no-fire economy. For college graduates 22 to 27 years old, the unemployment rate was 5.8% in March — the highest, excluding the pandemic, since 2012, and far above the nationwide rate. Lexie Lindo, 23, saw how reluctant companies were to hire while applying for more than 100 jobs last summer and fall after graduating from Clark Atlanta University with a business degree and 3.8 GPA. She had several summer internships in fields such as logistics and real estate while getting her degree, but no offer came. 'Nobody was taking interviews or responding back to any applications that I filled out,' Lindo, who is from Auburn, Georgia, said. "My resume is full, there's no gaps or anything. Every summer I'm doing something. It's just, 'OK, so what else are you looking for?'' She has returned to Clark for a master's program in supply chain studies and has an internship this summer at a Fortune 500 company in Austin, Texas. She's hopeful it will lead to a job next year. Artificial intelligence could be a culprit, particularly in IT. Matthew Martin, senior U.S. economist at Oxford Economics, has calculated that employment for college graduates 28 and above in computer science and mathematical occupations has increased a slight 0.8% since 2022. For those ages 22 to 27, it has fallen 8%, according to Martin. Company announcements have further fueled concerns. Tobi Lutke, CEO of online commerce software company Shopify, said in an April memo that before requesting new hires, 'teams must demonstrate why they cannot get what they want done using AI.' Last week, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said AI would likely reduce the company's corporate workforce over the next few years. 'We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,' Jassy said in a message to employees. 'We expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.' Zahid worries that AI is hurting her chances. She remembers seeing big billboard ads for AI at the San Francisco airport that asked, 'Why hire a human when you could use AI?' Still, many economists argue that blaming AI is premature. Most companies are in the early stages of adopting the technology. Professional networking platform LinkedIn categorized occupations based on their exposure to AI and did not see big hiring differences between professions where AI was more prevalent and where it wasn't, said Kory Kantenga, the firm's head of economics for the Americas. 'We don't see any broad-based evidence that AI is having a disproportionate impact in the labor market or even a disproportionate impact on younger workers versus older workers,' Kantenga said. He added that the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes have also slowed hiring in tech. Many IT firms expanded when the Fed pinned its short-term rate at nearly zero after the pandemic. In 2022, the Fed began cranking up rates to combat inflation, which made it harder to borrow and grow. In fact, IT's hiring spree when rates were low — fueled by millions of Americans ramping up their online shopping and video conferencing — left many firms with too many workers, economists say. Cory Stahle, an economist at the job-listings website Indeed, says postings for software development jobs, for example, have fallen 40% compared with four years ago. It's a sharp shift for students who began studying computer science when hiring was near its peak. Zahid, who lives in Dublin, California, has experienced this whiplash firsthand. When she entered college in 2019, her father, who is a network engineer, encouraged her to study IT and said it would be easy for her to get a job in the field. She initially studied psychology but decided she wanted something more hands-on and gravitated to data analysis. Her husband, 33, has a software development job, and friends of hers in IT received immediate job offers upon graduation a few years ago. Such rapid hiring seems to have disappeared now, she said. She has her college diploma, but hasn't hung it up yet. The post went viral with 8.4 million views as of this writing. It prompted a thoughtful discussion among viewers. Many shared how this tactic can save money and even land you a private driver. How Did She Save $40 On a Lyft? In her post, Valuable V says she saved $40 by asking the driver a simple question: 'How much is Lyft paying you for this ride?' The ride was locked in at $80, she says. The driver informed her they were only getting paid $20, however. 'Cancel the ride and here is $40 cash,' she says she offered the Lyft driver. They accepted, she says. 'All these charges for these rideshare people… Let me make a deal for you!' she captions the post. Others claim they have done the same. 'I did this and found an everyday driver,' one commenter shared. 'This happened to me. They were giving the driver $50 and charged me almost $300. Canceled and gave him $150,' another rider said. Lyft operates using dynamic pricing. Dynamic pricing bases products or services' prices on evolving market trends, Harvard Business School reports. As Lyft Engineering explains, 'Dynamic pricing aims for optimizing the entire rideshare network by looking at both riders and drivers to improve the throughput of rides. The algorithm starts counting and gathering input signals, and then trying to find a reasonable balance between demand and supply.' On Lyft's website , the company explains that fares are determined by estimated time and distance to complete the ride and distance to the pickup. The fare also depends on what's going on in your area, such as the number of ride requests, how many drivers are on the road, and how busy it is at the destination. It basically means that a ride costs more when there's higher demand, such as during rush hour or after a large sporting event, or fewer drivers, like in the middle of the night. The former is referred to as surge pricing. How Much Do Lyft Drivers Get Paid? According to Glassdoor , the average pay for a Lyft driver ranges from $17-23 an hour. Business Insider reports the hourly rate can be as low as $9-12 and up to $23-28. The wide variance between hourly rates is because pay is based on a variety of factors, such as tips, expenses, and how Lyft calculates the fare and fees. The rideshare industry has faced criticism for purportedly underpaying drivers. Last year, over a hundred people commented on a Reddit thread asking about Lyft drivers' pay. 'I recently had a driver who told me that out of a $120 fare he was only paid $20,' a redditor asked. 'Surely that must be a lie? I can't see Lyft charging the customer $120 and only paying the driver $20, so I've come here to ask if this could be true?' A Redditor who says they drive for the company commented, 'I had a ride last week that paid $92 and I got $12. Lyft is straight thieves.' 'Not a lie. This Saturday they were charging about $100 for an airport ride and paying like $25' another purported driver added. Lyft told Motor1 , "Drivers are essential to our purpose. That's why we've released a series of new features aimed at increasing driver pay. This includes an earnings commitment that ensures drivers always make at least 70% of the weekly rider fares after external fees.' This means that if a driver's earnings fall below that threshold in a given week, Lyft will pay them the difference, minus the external fees. According to Lyft, these are all the external fees that can take away from the driver's pay: Commercial auto insurance & other risk-related costs, Airport fees, Data processing fees, Payment processing fees, Sales tax, Government fees, and Ancillary insurance fees. Lyft told Motor1 that there's yet another fee that impacts driver pay but is largely outside its control: Car insurance. "It's also important to remember that runaway insurance costs are taking up an increasing percentage of the total rider fares,' the company said. 'That's bad for both riders and drivers, and it's why we are working with state lawmakers across the country to pass common-sense insurance reform that will help get these costs under control." People concerned about Lyft and other rideshare drivers' pay can always opt to take Valuable V's advice. 'This lowkey is something everybody should start doing,' one person commented.
