Paul Maurice: Matthew Tkachuk ‘not that far off' from Panthers return as playoffs loom
But with the Stanley Cup playoffs starting this weekend, and the team saying its timeline was for him to hopefully return when the postseason begins, coach Paul Maurice provided yet another update on the star winger as the regular season enters its final days.
'This week is a really important week for him,' Maurice said Monday morning on WQAM's Joe Rose Show. 'He's not that far off. If he's not [ready for Game 1 of the playoffs], he's very, very close. We're not missing this by two weeks.'
Tkachuk, who is on long-term injured reserve, sustained the injury during the United States' 3-1 win against Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off on Feb. 15 — his second game of the tournament. He didn't play the final 12:36 of that game, which secured the United States' spot in the championship game and during which he led a run of three fights in the opening nine seconds. With the USA already locked into the title game, Tkachuk then sat out the round-robin finale against Sweden on Feb. 17 entirely.
In the championship game on Feb. 20, which Canada won 3-2 in overtime, Tkachuk played just 6:47 and finished his final shift with 3:22 left in the second period.
Tkachuk has not played for the Panthers since then but did begin skating again on March 31 and has spent the past two weeks doing individual drills to get his conditioning back.
Maurice said the plan is for Tkachuk to resume working out with the team this week.
'It might be a day or two to [get to] a full push,' Maurice said. 'So what will happen is he'll amp up to full skates and hard skates toward the middle to end of this week. As he goes through those, how quick he recovers the next day will be the key thing. So if he comes in and there's no soreness the next day, then he's right and he'll be ready to go. If he's got a little residual soreness, we may have to hold another day or two, but he's not that far off.'
Prior to the injury, Tkachuk was second on the Panthers in goals (22), assists (35) and points (57) while leading the team with 11 power-play goals and 23 power-play points over 52 games. He is a staple in Florida's top-six, primarily serving as a winger on the Panthers' second line with center Sam Bennett.

Falcons work out former top-10 draft pick, per report
According to a report from NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Atlanta Falcons worked out cornerback C.J. Henderson on Thursday afternoon and are contemplating whether or not to sign the former first-round pick. Henderson was selected ninth overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars back in 2020, but his career has yet to live up to his draft status. The 26-year-old played just 10 games in Jacksonville before getting traded to the Carolina Panthers. He spent three seasons in Carolina (2021-2023) but did not return in 2024. Over his five NFL seasons, Henderson has appeared in 49 games (32 starts), recording three interceptions, 16 passes defended, two forced fumbles and one sack. Last season, the former Florida Gator signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers but was placed on the injured reserve list and did not appear in a single game. The Falcons signed safety Henry Black and released wide receiver Makai Polk from their 90-man training camp roster on Thursday morning. Atlanta also worked out former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jordan Whitehead on Wednesday as the team looks to add more secondary depth. Check out the Falcons' updated 90-man roster following Tuesday's transactions. This article originally appeared on Falcons Wire: Atlanta Falcons work out former top-10 pick C.J. Henderson

Panthers LS JJ Jansen seems pretty stoked about his Madden NFL 26 rating
Carolina Panthers long snapper JJ Jansen is finally right where he should be in the video game world. On Thursday, EA Sports revealed the top ten Madden NFL 26 ratings for the league's long snappers. And Jansen, who is now in his 17th season with the Panthers, found himself all the way up at No. 5 . . . As Jansen alludes to, the game has previously listed him as a tight end—and a pretty bad one, at that. He was given a dreadful overall rating of 36 in both Madden NFL 24 and Madden NFL 25. But this year, EA Sports has decided to properly identify Jansen and his fellow long snappers in creating a more realistic simulation. Oh, and Jansen wasn't the only Panther to receive a top-ten rating at his position. He's joined by Derrick Brown, whose 95 mark is good enough for the third overall spot amongst all defensive linemen. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

Pitt and Penn State take rivalry to the hardwood in December
A new chapter will be written in the Pitt vs. Penn State rivalry this winter when both schools' men's basketball teams face off in Hershey. The announcement was made on Wednesday that the Panthers and Nittany Lions will play a game on Saturday, December 21, at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. "Pitt and Penn State is a natural rivalry that makes a great deal of sense to play in the current collegiate landscape," said Pitt head coach Jeff Capel. "The trip to Hershey in December will give Pitt fans across the state an opportunity to see the team in action and will be a great way to tip off the holiday season." This will be the first meeting between the Pitt and Penn State men's teams since 2017, when they played at the Legends Classic in Brooklyn. The Nittany Lions scored an 85-54 victory over the Panthers. Both schools have faced off 148 times since 1906, with Penn State holding a slim 76-72 record over Pitt. While the Panthers trail all-time, in the past 25 seasons, Pitt holds a 7-2 record over Penn State. While it is among the most-played rivalries, the two schools have only played nine times since 2000-01. Tickets will go on sale later this year, and a tip-off time and TV information have yet to be announced.
