Dayak traditions foster unity in Sarawak, says Batu Kitang rep
KUCHING (June 28): The customs and traditions of the Dayak community can contribute to the spirit of unity in Sarawak, said Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang.
Speaking at the launch of Tematu Ethno Fest 2025, held in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration at Kampung Tematu's multipurpose hall last night, Lo highlighted that harmony is possible when all communities embrace and respect each other's unique cultural practices.
'The diversity of cultures, ethnicities, and religions is not a barrier for us to become a united and harmonious society, as long as we uphold mutual respect,' he said.
'We in Sarawak are very fortunate because religion and ethnicity have never been sources of conflict in the spirit of unity that has long been established.'

He also commended the event's organising committee, led by chairman John Pata James Jumin, for continuously improving the event's organisation with each passing year.
Formerly known as Karnival Gawai & Bitanding Dayung Gawea Tematu, the event has been rebranded as Tematu Ethno Fest. This year marks a decade of the event's organisation.
The evening also featured the introduction parade of finalists for the Onak Dayung Gawea Tematu 2025 and Sindok Gawea Tematu 2025 competitions, along with a talent and contemporary dress showcase by the Dayung Gawea Tematu 2025 finalists.
During the event, Lo announced an allocation of RM200,000 for road repair works in Kampung Tematu, specifically from Lorong Tematu 13 to Lorong Tematu 17.

Lo also presented a cheque for RM3,000 to the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Kampung Tematu, which was received by village chief Geofrey Tahang during the event.

Grammy-winning jazz musician Chuck Mangione dies at 84
ROCHESTER, July 25 — American two-time Grammy-winning jazz flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione, best known for his 1970s cross-over hit 'Feels So Good,' died this week at the age of 84 at his home in Rochester, New York. The prolific musician and composer — whose career spanned five decades and 30 albums — died in his sleep on Tuesday, a local funeral home said. 'Chuck's love affair with music has been characterised by his boundless energy, unabashed enthusiasm, and pure joy that radiated from the stage,' his family said in a statement to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle newspaper. Mangione showed his appreciation for his audiences by sitting at the edge of the stage after his concerts, signing autographs for fans who stayed to meet him and the band, it said. Born Charles Frank Mangione in 1940 in Rochester, he was a virtuoso flugelhorn and trumpet player. He grew up in a household where his father exposed him to the jazz greats of the 1950s, including Dizzy Gillespie, a family friend who dined with them frequently. He began taking music lessons at age 8, and by the time he was a teenager, Gillespie was so impressed by his musical prowess that he gave Mangione one of his trademark 'upswept' trumpets. His composition 'Chase The Clouds Away' was featured at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, while his 'Give It All You Got' was the theme music for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Mangione's biggest hit was his 1977 single 'Feels So Good,' which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammys. His album by the same name is a staple on smooth jazz radio stations. Mangione won two Grammys out of 14 nominations — the first in 1977 for best instrumental composition for 'Bellavia,' named in honour of his mother. In 1979 he won in the best pop instrumental performance category for 'The Children of Sanchez.' The latter, a soundtrack for the movie of the same name, also won a Golden Globe. In the late 1990s, Mangione's music attracted new fans after he played himself on the Fox TV cartoon show King of the Hill as a celebrity spokesman for the fictional 'Mega-lo-mart,' with the slogan 'shopping feels so good.' He also scored the music for the 1998 Valentine's Day episode.

Pageant of grace and Dayak cultural pride

College student Mesha Carlynie Jess took home the coveted title at the event held at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1, Sibu, in conjunction with the Borneo Cultural Festival in Sarawak. The 22-year-old banking diploma student from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Mukah impressed judges and the audience with her poise and grace. 'I was surprised and overjoyed as I didn't expect to win this competition,' said Mesha. 'I'm very pleased with the result because it reflects the hard work I put in before and during the event,' said Mesha. She received RM4,000 cash, a crown, sash, trophy, certificate and gift hamper. Mesha said she had to travel frequently between Mukah and Sibu to attend classes as well as the finalist selection and rehearsals. Originally from Kapit, she is no stranger to Kumang (traditional beauty contest) competitions, having taken part in over 20 since 2022 and winning several of them. 'Through Kumang competitions, I aim to send the message that true beauty lies not only in appearance, but also in knowledge, self-confidence and cultural pride,' she said. 'I hope to elevate Dayak traditions so they remain appreciated and are embraced by the younger generation,' she added. Axiomara Tijan Andy was named first runner-up and won RM3,000, while Emily Rinya Lenggang was second runner-up with RM2,000. Both also received sashes, trophies, hampers and certificates. Each of the other finalists – Natasha Malviana, Manisha Vyonnie, Amenda Alannie, Jatitup Nyambar, Daphne Herbeck Ilam, Nelly Mujan and Melanie Joyce – received RM1,000 and a certificate of appreciation. The 10 finalists were selected from an initial pool of 24 contestants to showcase their beauty and cultural pride on the grand stage, while donning intricate and traditional Orang Ulu attire. National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang launched the event.

CNBlue Yong Hwa returns for concert in KL
JUNG Yong Hwa (Yong Hwa), the all-round South Korean idol best known as the frontman of CNBlue, is set to make return to Malaysia for his first-ever solo concert here. Organised by Lo-Fi Entertainment, 2025 Jung Yong Hwa Live 'Director's Cut: Our Fine Days' in Kuala Lumpur will hit the stage at Mega Star Arena, KL on Sept 14 (Sunday), 7pm. Celebrating the 10th year since his solo debut, the tour coincides with the release of his third mini album One Last Day. With his signature command of stage, captivating vocals and charming moves, Yong Hwa is geared to deliver a familiar yet different excitement for the fans.
