Rasmus Kupari leaves Winnipeg Jets for Switzerland
Forward Axel Jonsson-Fjällby recently signed in Sweden, and now Rasmus Kupari is also headed back overseas.
HC Lugano of Switzerland's National League announced they've signed Kupari to a two-year contract.
The 25-year-old product of Finland spent parts of two seasons with the Jets after being acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade.
'I think Lugano is the ideal place to take the next step in my career,' Kupari said in a translated statement. 'I want to be a leader on and off the ice and bring my game to the entire rink, both defensively and offensively. I think my most important skill is skating.'

Kupari started last season as the Jets fourth line centre, but he lost his place in the lineup after suffering a concussion and didn't play at all in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

In 59 games this past season, he scored five goals with three assists. He was held without a goal in 28 contests in his first season with Winnipeg.
'He is a first-round forward, a good skater with important qualities in every area of the rink,' said HC Lugano general manager Janick Steinmann in a translated statement. 'In North America he has often been assigned more defensive roles, but with us he will be able to assert his skills as a two-way player.
'I am convinced that his qualities adapt very well to the National League and he will also have a strong impact on the offensive phase. I am extremely happy to have him with us in Lugano and to be able to observe all his potential.'
Kupari was set to become a restricted free agent next month and the Jets can retain his NHL rights by making him a qualifying offer this summer.

Feeling the 'urgency,' Yankees go for sweep of struggling Cardinals
(Photo credit: Jeff Curry-Imagn Images) The injury-battered New York Yankees felt urgency coming into St. Louis for a three-game weekend series against the Cardinals. That was underscored by Yankees general manager Brian Cashman's presence with the team. 'I feel like we need to step it up anyway, no matter if he was here or not,' infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. said. '... We need to win games. We need to get to the playoffs, and we need to win the World Series. That's all our thought is right now.' Cashman brought good luck with him. The Yankees won 4-3 on Friday and 12-8 Saturday night and will bid for a series sweep on Sunday afternoon. After winning four of their last five games, the Yankees hold the third and final American League wild-card slot with a 2 1/2-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians. New York is 6 1/2 games behind the division-leading Toronto Blue Jays. 'Right now, we're not in control of the division, so our first goal is to try to win the American League East and automatically punch the ticket that way,' Cashman said. 'If not, we'll be fighting to punch a ticket a different way. And there's a lot of time on the clock, but not enough time at the same time. I don't want to misrepresent there's not urgency, because there is.' The Yankees will close this series with right-handed starter Will Warren (7-5, 4.34 ERA), who allowed just three runs on 12 hits in 17 2/3 innings in his last three starts, a 2-1 span for New York. Warren lost his only previous start against St. Louis while allowing four runs on five hits in four innings of a 6-5 Cardinals victory last season. For New York, former Cardinals star Paul Goldschmidt was out of the lineup again Saturday due to a knee sprain. Giancarlo Stanton was sidelined again with lower-body soreness, and Cody Bellinger missed the game because of illness. Ben Rice played first base in place of Goldschmidt on Saturday and drove in seven runs on three hits, including a three-run homer and a bases-clearing double. He is 8-for-21 with two doubles, two homers, four runs and eight RBIs in his past five games. The Cardinals have lost four straight games to fall 4 1/2 games back of the New York Mets in the race for the final National League wild-card slot. Like the Yankees, St. Louis' lineup has been depleted by recent injuries. Third baseman Nolan Arenado is on the injured list with a shoulder strain, utility player Brendan Donovan is sidelined by foot and groin injuries, and first baseman Willson Contreras has been out due to a foot contusion. Outfielder Victor Scott II left Saturday night's game with a left ankle sprain he suffered while trying to make a leaping catch on Aaron Judge's home run in the third inning. The Cardinals will start right-hander Miles Mikolas (6-9, 4.97 ERA) on Sunday while trying to avoid a sweep. Mikolas has allowed two runs or fewer in three of his last four starts. He lasted a season-best 6 2/3 innings Monday in his most recent start while holding the Colorado Rockies to two runs on four hits and a walk. Mikolas struck out three in a game the Cardinals won 3-2, though he took a no-decision. 'There are lots of young guys in this locker room who have tremendous amounts of fight in them and tons of heart,' Mikolas said. 'We're not giving up, no matter what anybody else is throwing our way.' Mikolas is 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees.

Cubs bid to ignite offense in series finale vs. Pirates
(Photo credit: Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images) Offense has been hard to come by for the Chicago Cubs in August. And though they still struggled in a 3-1 victory against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, the Cubs hope the come-from-behind win will provide a boost in the rubber match of the teams' three-game series on Sunday afternoon. Seiya Suzuki knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning before Nico Hoerner drove in another run in the inning for insurance. 'When the lineup's been struggling a little bit, these games are a great opportunity to create momentum,' Suzuki said via an interpreter. 'The hope is we'll keep it going.' Chicago has been held to three runs or less in 10 of its 14 games this month. 'This is a good baseball team that's proven itself,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'We haven't scored some runs in a little bit of a stretch here. We will, because this is a good offense. That makes me optimistic, and it makes me know that we will score runs. We will be a good offense.' Kyle Tucker is one of those looking to get back on track. The right fielder has struggled since the All-Star break, hitting .198 in the season's second half. In August, he's managed just a .170 average in 13 games. He went 2-for-4 on Saturday after going 0-for-14 in his previous four games. 'We're still a really good team regardless of how the last couple weeks or whatever has gone,' Tucker said. 'We're still in a playoff hunt right now and in the playoffs currently. ... Our goal is to grind out the season and get to the playoffs and try to win from there. That's what we're going to try to do.' Right-hander Javier Assad (0-1, 9.00 ERA), who returned from injury to make his season debut on Tuesday, will start in the series finale for the Cubs, who hold the top wild-card spot in the National League. Assad surrendered four runs on eight hits in four innings Tuesday in a 5-1 setback to the Toronto Blue Jays. He is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in four career starts against Pittsburgh. Like the Cubs, the Pirates will look to get their offense going after failing to convert on their opportunities Saturday. 'We just have to find a way to get the big base hit,' Pittsburgh manager Don Kelly said. 'It's something that we've talked about a lot. Finding ways to stay gap to gap, keep the line moving and come up with that big hit.' Right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski (2-7, 4.20 ERA) will serve as the opener in what is expected to be a bullpen game for the Pirates. Mlodzinski has faced the Cubs seven times in his career, starting once. He has a 2.70 ERA without a decision over 13 1/3 innings. The bullpen will have a new addition in left-hander Andrew Heaney, who was added to the group after a lengthy slump during which he allowed 39 runs (37 earned) and 13 home runs over his past 10 games (nine starts). He'll remain there for the rest of the season. 'I've been in the game long enough to know that you get opportunities that you earn, and I haven't earned it,' Heaney said.
