PAA says PQC works on main runway of JIAP completed
According to the spokesman, the PQC phase, which was initiated in late December 2024, concluded on July 30, 2025, a month ahead of schedule, due to the use of high-precision slipform paving technology and 24/7 operational shifts that ensured consistent progress.
Simultaneously, the complete Airfield Lighting (AFL) system, comprising airfield lights, taxiway guidance signs, cables, and constant current regulators, has been delivered from renowned global suppliers and is currently under installation, he informed.
Remaining works, such as runway centre-line-marking and taxiway painting, are progressing as part of the final stages of the up-gradation, he added.

SMEDA's ‘national roadmap' draft reviewed
LAHORE: The Technical Working Group (TWG) of the Ministry of Industries and Production (MoIP)) on Business Formalisation reviewed an initial draft of the National Roadmap, proposed by SMEDA, in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation's consultants, for transition of informal businesses into formal businesses. The review meeting was held at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) head office with Saif Anjum, Secretary MoIP in chair. It was attended by Asad Islam Mahni, Additional Secretary Industries and Production, Socrat Aman Rana, CEO SMEDA, ILO Consultants Usman Khan, Muhammad Awais and senior officials of SMEDA. The other members of the TWG from private and public sector joined the discussion on zoom. CEO SMEDA Socrat Aman Rana said that that Over 84 percent of Pakistan's workforce operates informally within SMEs and home-based working sector, which creates obstacles for businesses and workers alike, hindering access to critical markets, financing, social protections, and skill development. He informed that the Project is an outcome of an earlier mapping study by ILO and SMEDA, which identified the need of developing a national roadmap for formalizing SMEs and home-based workers, removing barriers to registration and simplifying processes of regulations and operation. Federal Secretary MoIP Saif Anjum said the collaboration of MoIP with the ILO for Enterprise Formalisation Project aims to attract enterprises operating in informal sector towards formal sector by bridging the gaps in their formalization process. He observed that the informal SMEs can thrive within a formal and supportive economic framework by creating a fearless and conducive environment. He was confident that National Roadmap to be developed for enterprises will enable SME sector to add substantial value to the national economy. Earlier ILO Consultant Usman Khan gave a detailed presentation on the proposed National Roadmap for transition of the informal businesses towards business formalization. Airspace closure costs Pak Rs4.1b
The closure of Pakistan's airspace has affected 100 to 150 Indian aircraft daily, resulting in about a 20% reduction in air traffic, said a written reply submitted by the Ministry of Defence to the National Assembly regarding closure of airspace in the wake of Pakistan-India confrontation in May. According to the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), the closure for aircraft registered with Indian airlines caused a loss of approximately Rs4.1 billion in overflight revenue between April 24 and June 30, 2025. The airspace was closed after the April 22 attack on tourists in the Indian Occupied Kashmir. Later on May 7 India launched missile strikes inside Pakistan sparking a conflict that lasted till May 10 when Pakistan launched a series of attacks inside India. In 2019, the closure of airspace after Pulwama attack in the held Kashmir had caused a loss of about Rs7.6 billion in overflight revenue for the PAA — then called the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). During the recent confrontation with India, Pakistan bore certain financial losses due to the airspace closure; however, national sovereignty and defence are considered more important than economic interests, the reply added. Safeguarding the homeland remains the top priority. Currently, Pakistan's airspace is open for all airlines except Indian aircraft. Pakistani airlines and aircraft are also prohibited from flying over Indian airspace. Before the 2019 tensions, the average daily overflight revenue stood at $508,000. Despite this temporary disruption, the PAA demonstrated financial resilience. When it comes to defending national sovereignty and security, no price is too high. The defence of Pakistan will always remain our foremost priority, it added.
