EXCLUSIVE Disabled man with able-bodied girlfriend SLAMS trolls who 'don't understand' their relationship
A disabled man dating an able-bodied woman has clapped back at haters who say they 'don't understand' how someone 'like him' got a girlfriend. Angel Martinez, 18, from Kansas City, was born with a condition called arthrogryposis, which causes joint stiffness. Unfortunately, the disease has left him wheelchair bound and unable to do 'basic day to day things' like 'using the bathroom, eating, getting dressed, or even getting into bed' without help. He connected with a woman named Karla on social media back in 2022, and when they met in person for the first time that November, it was love at first sight. But the couple - who are now gearing up to get married - has faced immense scrutiny over their relationship, with haters on the internet accusing her of cheating or alleging that his parents 'pay' her to be with him. Now, Angel has spoken exclusively with the Daily Mail about the unfair backlash they have received. 'People don't understand how someone like Karla could be with someone like me,' he shared. 'At first, that used to bother us. It was tough, especially for Karla. 'It's hard to understand why people judge without knowing us. But over time, we learned to ignore it. 'We realized it says more about them than about us, so we don't let it affect our relationship or how we see ourselves.' Angel admitted that in addition to the online hate, the couple often get 'stares' from people in public when they're out together. While chatting with the Daily Mail, Angel explained that the 'realization' that he will 'always need someone to help take care of him' was hard at first, but he's come to accept it. 'Basically, my condition makes some parts of my body harder to move because my joints are stiff,' he explained. 'It makes it hard to do basic day to day things that most people don't think twice about like using the bathroom by myself, feeding myself, getting dressed, driving, or even getting into bed. 'It's not easy knowing that level of independence may never fully be there.' He insisted that Karla loves him for his bubbly 'personality' and has never looked at him differently because of his disability. 'Even though I'm in a wheelchair, I've always shown people who I really am,' he dished. 'I'm outgoing, I joke around, I like making people laugh. My personality plays a big part in how I connect with others. 'Karla actually told me that's why she started liking me in the first place because of how funny and confident I was, and how I didn't let being in a wheelchair stop me from being myself. 'By the time we started getting to know each other, she already knew about my condition but she never made it a big deal. She saw the fun, confident person I am first.' He recalled falling 'in love' with her the moment he laid eyes on her. 'There was just something about her energy and the way she carried herself. It felt real from the beginning,' he gushed. Angel admitted that he was 'a little nervous' at first to ask Karla to help him with day-to-day activities, but added that she immediately stepped up. 'She never hesitated. She never made it feel weird or uncomfortable for me to ask for help. That meant a lot,' he gushed. Karla told the Daily Mail, 'I think the only hard part is wishing I could do more for him sometimes. 'But I love Angel for who he is, and I've never made his disability the main focus in our relationship.' In the end, Angel said he hopes that others can learn from their unconventional romance. 'To the haters, or anyone who doesn't understand how someone like me can have a girlfriend while they don't, I want to tell them to use me as an example that anything is possible,' he said. 'Instead of being negative or mad that I have a girlfriend, use it as motivation to work on yourself and find your own love. 'Know that there is love out there, and there will be someone who loves you for who you are. 'What's been beautiful is how much support we've also gotten especially after sharing our relationship online. 'Now, strangers will come up to us just to say they love how we love each other. That kind of support always outweighs the stares.'
