The 10 best museums in Amsterdam

Telegraph15-07-2025
For a small country, the Netherlands has made a huge impact on world art, both back in the 17th century, then again with straight lines and bold primary colours in the 20th – with Van Gogh slipped in along the way. So, the Big Three museums – Old Masters, Van Gogh and modern art respectively – lead the way. But Amsterdam is a treasure box of other attractions, too, from a quirky collection of mechanical pianos, through canal-side mansions dripping with chandeliers and shining with silver, to boundary-bursting photography, and an urban explosion of street art and graffiti.
All our museum recommendations below have been hand selected and tested by our resident destination expert. Find out more below or for further inspiration, see our guides to the city's best hotels, restaurants, shopping, bars & cafés, attractions and free things to do.

Rijksmuseum
One of the world's great art museums adds glittering gold and silver, centuries-old costumes, furniture fit for royalty, and precious dolls' houses to a parade of Old Masters that includes Rembrandt, Vermeer, Jan Steen and Frans Hals.
Insider tip: First check out the exceptional centuries-old treasures in the Asian Pavilion downstairs, and save the Old Masters till after 3.30pm, when the halls are less busy.
Neighbourhood: Museum Quarter
Metro: Trams 2, 3, 5, 12; Vijzelstraat metro

Van Gogh Museum
More of Van Gogh's canvases hang here than anywhere else in the world, including Sunflowers and Wheatfield with Crows, alongside sketches, letters and much else, in an imaginative display that brings you up close to the man himself.
Insider tip: Pre-book as far in advance as you can, and aim for early in the week, after 3.30pm to avoid the really busy periods.
Neighbourhood: Museum Quarter
Metro: Trams 2, 3, 5, 12; Vijzelstraat metro

Stedelijk Museum
This museum is home to all that has rocked modern and contemporary art, both Dutch (De Stijl, CoBra, Mondrian) and international (Picasso, Malevich, Warhol), from the 20th century till now. And there's a fine collection of design, too.
Insider tip: It's hidden at the back of the museum downstairs, but don't miss the Appelbar, the Stedelijk's original refreshment kiosk with bright murals by CoBrA artist Karel Appel.
FOAM
Blockbuster shows and retrospectives of big-name photographers (such as Richard Avedon and Cartier-Bresson) share space with radical new talent, and forays into the furthest limits of where photography can take us. Solo shows, themed exhibitions and plenty of discussion forums join the mix.
Insider tip: Buy a 'FOAM Edition' – an original photo by a past exhibitor, in the FOAM Gallery shop at the top of the building.

History
Verzetsmuseum (Museum of the Resistance)
A riveting insight into life in the Netherlands under the Nazi occupation, and of the Dutch resistance movement. Interactive displays, along with the personal stories of heroes, Nazi collaborators and ordinary people trapped in between put you right in the moment.
Insider tip: Press a doorbell to hear the various excuses neighbours offered for not taking on an onderduiker (secret lodger, hiding from the Nazis). It makes it all seem very real.
Neighbourhood: Amsterdam East / former Jewish Quarter
Metro: Tram 14; Waterlooplein metro

Joods Cultureel Kwartier (Jewish Cultural Quarter)

Insider tip: A combined ticket valid for the historical museum, the holocaust museum and the Portuguese Synagogue is valid for a week and good value.

Culture
Museum Van Loon
Of all the canal houses open to the public, this 17th-century mansion is the one that most has the atmosphere of an (admittedly very grand) family home. Among the portraits and tinkling crystal you are back in another age – but it feels as if the owners might be back any minute and catch you there.
Insider tip: Don't miss the elegant formal garden, hidden from the street view behind the house.
Neighbourhood: Canal Belt
Metro: Tram 2, 4, 12, 17. Vijzelgracht metro
Website: museumvanloon.nl
Huis Marseille
Grand canal house meets fascinating photography, Huis Marseille stages engaging and challenging contemporary photo and video exhibitions, often hung in ways that respond to its historic architecture, drawing on outside artists as well as its strong in-house collection of mainly Dutch, South African and Japanese work.
Insider tip: Look up! The ceiling in the Garden Room is by Jacob de Wit, the leading 18th-century Dutch interiors painter.
Neighbourhood: Canal Belt
Metro: Tram 2, 12, 17; Rokin metro
Website: huismarseille.nl
STЯAAT: Street Art Museum Amsterdam
A wharf-side warehouse in former docklands offers the wall space necessary for gigantic displays of street art and graffiti. Abstract or graphic, startling or soothing, there's work by both local and international artists, and even workshops if you want a go yourself.
Insider tip: A Museum Card is not valid for this museum, but there's plenty of street art outside as the area is a hotspot for local graffiti artists.
Geelvinck Pianola Museum
Discover a fascinating collection of self-playing pianos, from the Charlie Chaplin honky-tonk variety to sophisticated instruments whose scrolls reproduce every nuance of the original pianist's playing – with a collection of original scrolls created by the likes of Prokofiev and Debussy.
Insider tip: See and hear the machines put through their paces, sometimes in combo with live musicians at one of the regular 'recitals'.

Fiat reckons it's found the formula for the perfect road trip playlist

Fiat is taking a musical approach to the UK launch of the Grande Panda, teaming up with a music psychologist to produce what the Italian car maker boldly claims is the 'world's happiest car playlist'. The mood-boosting playlist, which Fiat insists was crafted with scientific rigour, celebrates 70 years of the Fiat 600 and the upcoming arrival of its new Grande Panda in September. After an undisclosed number of days working tireless in the laboratory, the eggheads triumphantly emerged with a list of songs that include ABBA's Mamma Mia, Taylor Swift's Shake it Off, and Pharrell Williams' Happy. According to Fiat's vital research, the formula for a happy track involves a melodic major seventh chord, a 4/4 time signature, a tempo of at least 137 beats per minute and, naturally, positive lyrics. This killer combination, Fiat claims, triggers a dopamine release in the brains of drivers and passengers. Also making the cut are Oasis's She's Electric and The Beatles' Day Tripper, suggesting the algorithm for musical joy was perfected sometime in the mid-nineties. The set of feel-good tunes serenades the UK launch of the Grande Panda, a family friendly EV that our editor Steve Fowler says 'offers charm by the bucketload'. Something else to feel happy about is Fiat's re-introduction of the £1,500 EV grant for the Fiat and Abarth 500e and 600e, meaning the Fiat 600e now starts at £30,035. The retro-styled Grande Panda is set to arrive in showrooms later this summer with a starting price of £18,035 for the hybrid version. Meanwhile the all-electric Grande Panda starts at £21,035, a great value SUV that comes with generous kit as standard. 'No compromise, low-priced electric cars are coming thick and fast,' said Steve Fowler in his Fiat Grande Panda review, 'and the new Fiat Grande Panda is one of the best.'

Comedian Munya Chawawa says ‘death of British TV' cannot be blamed on TikTok

Comedian and actor Munya Chawawa has said British TV is dying, not because of online platforms like TikTok, but 'because it's lost its willingness to take risks'. The comedian, 32, who turns political discourse into satirical videos online, was given a standing ovation after he delivered the Alternative MacTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Thursday. In his speech, Chawawa said: 'Meticulously crafted, traditionally-produced TV shows have come to terms with the fact that the apex of their existence might be as a pixelated repost on TikTok soundtracked by the Jet2holiday theme song. 'The horsemen of the apocalypse, the broadsheets, bellow out unanimously 'traditional TV is dying', and perhaps the most devastating impact is the fact that much of it is self-inflicted. 'In the face of a rapidly-changing landscape, British television has ignored evolution and the same outdated gatekeepers have stuck to the same outdated guns whilst yelling, 'Hey guys, remember this one?' like an out-of-touch dad doing the worm.' He continued: 'British TV isn't dying because of TikTok. It's dying because it's lost its willingness to take risks, to throw caution to the wind and to gamble on great ideas. 'While traditional television desperately throw texts to its ex with the promise of nostalgia and reboots of all the favourites, the audience swipe through a collection of new hot guys, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.' In July, an annual Ofcom report revealed that YouTube is now the second most-watched media service in the UK behind the BBC and ahead of ITV. In a separate report, the regulatory body said that traditional public service media (PSM) is under threat and that the Government should bring forward legislation to help 'ensure that PSM content is prominent and easy to find on the (sharing) platforms, and on fair commercial terms'. Chawawa also spoke about the surprising success of Netflix dystopian drama Squid Game, which is a non-English language title whose figures have made it one of Netflix's most watched shows globally. 'Now, whatever doubts you had about the internet's ability to outmatch TV was settled when the first series (of Squid Game) dropped on Netflix, given Squid Game was a revolutionary Korean-language international streaming show. 'However, it set records for what audiences for high-end drama could reach after the first season it sat at a colossal 265 million views. Debate settled. TV wins. 'Until a few months later, when a YouTuber named Mr Beast recreated the show up on his channel and got 850 million views.' The US YouTube star published a video on the platform that was based on the popular South Korean show, which sees 456 people compete for a cash prize. Chawawa said: 'The message was clear, anything you can do, we can do better, and now present-day evidence supports that theory more than ever. ' He added: 'To survive, tele has to move forward … where creators have passion, TV can sculpt it into ideas and formats, where creators have ideas, we can bring them into formats where creators have formats already. TV can inject budget to elevate them to their full potential.' After his speech, Chawawa spoke about the precarity of working in TV and said: 'I could have been someone who worked at my digital following, had a shot on TV and then just blew it, just by virtue of the fact that it was such an alien landscape. 'There was no sort of nurturing up through to those points… it can't be that our relationship with digital talent is prove to us you are somebody, then we'll put you on the big shows, and if you flop that's the end of your TV career.' Chawawa won best breakthrough comedian at the 2021 National Comedy Awards and has starred in entertainment shows including Would I Lie To You? and Taskmaster. Former Countdown star Carol Vorderman and former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn are among the public figures who have delivered the Alternative MacTaggart lecture before. The Observer's editor-in-chief, James Harding, delivered the James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture lecture on Wednesday and spoke about recent criticisms directed at the BBC.

How Katie Price's exes going to war with star is causing friction with boyfriend JJ Slater as he's warned ‘dump her'

ATTACKS from Katie Price's warring exes has caused tension between her and boyfriend JJ Slater - as he's bombarded with warnings to 'dump her'. Friends claim the latest drama 'should ring alarm bells' for the former Married at First Sight star after Katie's three ex-husbands launch legal action. 9 9 9 JJ Slater, 32, is struggling to 'block out the noise' as 47-year-old Katie's former partner Carl Woods waded in on their relationship. A friend of JJ's told The Sun: 'JJ always knew it wouldn't be a quiet life with Katie when they started dating, but the recent attacks from her exes has rocked the boat. 'It's made him worry about their own future and it's caused a lot of tension. 'He's trying to block out the noise but friends are warning him to dump her now before it's too late. 'If he gets out soon, before they're married or had a baby, he won't have to have her in his life. 'But JJ is loyal and he wants to make sure they stay strong as a couple throughout this blip. 'Katie always reassures him that their relationship is different to what she had with all the others. 'She wants him to be her happy ending.' Katie's previous partner Carl, who she dated before JJ, claimed she cheated on him while undergoing IVF to have a baby. He has since warned JJ – who is 14 years younger than Katie: 'Soon she'll be dating lads that are Junior's age – he'll be 25 in a few years. Psychologically, Katie still thinks she's young and she wants to prove she can still get all the young men. She gets a thrill out of it.' He added: "She won't ever be happy with anyone. I would like to say she'd be happy with JJ… but unfortunately you always have a shelf life. "I see the pattern and I see that he's doing exactly what I was doing, and I was doing exactly what [Katie's previous ex] Kris Boyson was doing, exactly what Kieran [Hayler] had done. We've all walked the same path. 'I'm a very strong person and she made absolute mincemeat of me. So if she does the same, that poor f***er hasn't got a chance. We talk about cheating but this is just how life is when you're with her. She'll never stop." A spokesman for Katie said at the time: 'Another ex cashing in on Katie. 'For someone who didn't want to be famous, he's not doing a very good job at it." A war broke out between Katie and her former partners last week when her first husband Peter Andre opened the floodgates with a public statement, accusing her of making "baseless accusations" against him. Their row was sparked by Katie moaning about being frozen out of her daughter Princess's soaring career - and claimed that their kids live with both Pete and her. Setting the record straight, Pete said his children Princess and Junior have been in his care since 2018 'for their safety.' The Sun revealed yesterday he was left 'devastated' after witnessing Princess's TV career being bulldozed by her mum. The teenager - whose new ITV2 show The Princess Diaries launched last week - was even 'blamed' for the rift with her mum, amid claims she wasn't allowed to film. Katie went on an epic rant on her podcast The Katie Price about being left out of Princess's life by Pete and his management, accusing them of thinking she's 'trash'. Her sister Sophie then controversially said: 'Ultimately I do think it's down to Princess to put her foot down a bit." Revealing his plans to take legal action, Peter said: "Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations that I have yet to address. Those will be dealt with in the coming months." Meanwhile her two other ex husbands Kieran Hayler, 38, and Alex Reid, 50, are said to be consulting lawyers in a bid to stop her explosive Sky documentary airing next year. Alex sensationally leaked a clip, believed to have been filmed in 2020, of then-bankrupt Katie counting wads of cash in front of Princess. Katie Price's relationship history We take a look back at the highs and lows of Katie Price's relationship history. 1996-1998: Katie got engaged to Gladiators star Warren Furman - aka Ace - with a £3,000 ring. But their relationship didn't make it as far as 'I do'. 1998-2000: Katie described Dane Bowers as 'the love of her life' but she broke up with the singer when he allegedly cheated on her. 2001: Footballer Dwight Yorke is the father of Katie's eldest child Harvey. He has had very little to do with Harvey throughout his life. 2002: Rebounding from Dwight, Katie famously had one night of passion with Pop Idol star Gareth Gates, allegedly taking his virginity. 2002-2004: Katie was dating Scott Sullivan when she entered the jungle for I'm A Me Out Of Here!. He threatened to "punch Peter's lights out" when chemistry blossomed between her and Peter Andre. 2004-2009: The jungle romance resulted in Katie marrying Aussie pop star Peter. They had two kids, Junior and Princess, before their bitter split in 2009. 2010-2011: Fresh from her break-up with Peter, Katie enjoyed a whirlwind relationship and marriage with cage fighter Alex Reid. They split 20 months after their Las Vegas wedding. 2011: Katie briefly dated model Danny Cipriani... but it ended as quickly as it begun. 2011-2012: They didn't speak the same language, but Katie got engaged to Argentinian model Leandro Penna in 2011. He later fled home to South America. 2012-2018: Wedding bells rang once more after Katie met Kieran Hayler in 2013. They had two kids together, Jett and Bunny, before their break-up and divorce. 2018-2019: Katie moved on quickly with Kris Boyson. They had an on-off romance for one year and even got engaged. They split for good in 2019. 2019: Katie was linked to Charles Drury during her on-off relationship with Kris. Charles, who also dated Lauren Goodger, has always denied being in "official relationship" with her. 2020-2023: Car salesman Carl Woods took a shining to Katie in 2020. Their relationship was up and down for three years. They broke up for a final time last year. 2024-present: After weeks of rumours, Katie confirmed her relationship with Married At First Sight star JJ Slater in February this year. 9 9 In the shocking video, Katie mocks her ex Peter for having to pay for Junior and Princess's private school fees. She then brands his younger children with new wife Emily 'irrelevant'. Our source added: 'As much as Katie is trying to put on a brave face and go on as normal, it's been a stressful week for the couple. 'Anyone facing this kind of pressure would be struggling. 'It's now down to JJ to decide whether what he has with Katie is special enough to survive all this. He loves her and wants to believe their bond is different to what she's had in the past.' 9 9 9
