MONTREAL – Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko took down top-seeded American Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Aug 2, thrilling the home crowd as she reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal.
The 18-year-old wild card saved all four break points she faced, and broke reigning French Open champion Gauff three times on the way to a comprehensive victory in just 62 minutes.
'I don't even know what to say still, I was kind of shocked about it all,' said Mboko, adding that the support of the home crowd had buoyed her late in the second set.
'I just remember in the last game when I was up 5-4, the crowd kind of started cheering even louder, and everything got super noisy,' she said.
'I kind of used that as more fuel for myself and to pump myself up a little bit more.
'I think it helped me tremendously, especially in the last game, since they were so encouraging me. It was just amazing.'
Mboko started the season ranked 333rd in the world and has worked her way up to 85th but the win over Gauff – who she took to three sets in Rome in May – is the biggest win of her career.

'Playing Coco is obviously never easy. She's No. 2 in the world, and it has been such a great opportunity for me to play against someone like her,' Mboko said.
'I was just happy I kept my composure today and I pulled it through.'
Gauff, who had a combined 37 double faults as she struggled through her first two matches, was caught flat-footed as the Canadian teen raced through the first set in 25 minutes.
Gauff buckled down in the second, but she was unable to convert three break chances in the seventh game – coming up short on a drop shot and smacking a forehand into the net on the first two.
She gained another chance only to hit a service return long, then flew a volley wide to give Mboko a game point, duly converted when Gauff fired a forehand long.
Down 15-30 in the ninth game, Mboko leveled at 30-30 with a blistering backhand, then closed out the hold for a 5-4 lead.
Serving to stay in the match, Gauff fell in a quick 0-30 hole and double-faulted to give Mboko a match point, on which the American hit a backhand into the net.
'She played a really great match, that's basically it,' Gauff said.
'I haven't played the best in this tournament, so I knew that it would be tough. I just felt like I could do better today, but I also knew that if I took my foot off the gas a little bit that she would take advantage of those moments, and she did.'
Mboko will next play Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who won a see-saw battle with China's Zhu Lin 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina outlasted Dayana Yastremska 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 to book a quarter-final clash with Marta Kostyuk.
Kazakhstan's Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion who won her first title in more than a year at Strasbourg in May, was slowed by nine double faults.
But she ultimately had enough to get past Ukraine's Yastremska, breaking her twice in the third set and sealing it on her fourth match point.
She will face another Ukrainian in Kostyuk, who came from behind to beat American McCartney Kessler 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. AFP
In the men's draw, top-seeded Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals against defending champion Alexei Popyrin as his fourth-round opponent Francisco Cerundolo was forced to retire with an abdominal injury on Aug 2.
Germany's Zverev secured a 6-4, 1-0 victory, Argentina's Cerundolo taking a medical timeout after the fifth game and finally calling a halt after less than an hour on court.
'He's an incredible player, we have a close personal relationship,' Zverev said of Cerundolo. 'I know about abdominal injuries.
'You can't serve or accelerate on the forehand. He had tears in his eyes when he had to quit. He didn't want to disappoint the crowd.
'But they can last from a few days to a few months. I have respect for him – he beat me three times before tonight.'
Australia's Popyrin won his ninth straight match in Canada, beating ninth seed Holger Rune 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Karen Khachanov reached his second straight prestige quarter-final, ambushing eighth seed Casper Ruud 6-4, 7-5 to continue his ATP hot streak.
Khachanov next faces Alex Michelsen, who claimed his first Masters last-eight place with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over fellow American and good friend Learner Tien. AFP

Olympic champion Evenepoel to join Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe team

The 25-year-old former Vuelta a Espana winner, who won gold in the road race and time trial at last year's Paris Games, joined Soudal Quick-Step in 2019, and was contracted to the team until the end of 2026. "Representatives of Remco informed the team's management that he did not wish to discuss an extension of his current agreement," Soudal Quick-Step said in a statement. "The team's ownership and management have decided that it is in best interest of everyone to agree that Remco can move at the end of the current 2025 season." In December, Evenepoel collided with the open door of a vehicle while training in Belgium, suffering multiple fractures, a dislocated collarbone and contusions to both lungs. He underwent surgery and worried he might have to retire, but returned to competition in April. Evenepoel was third overall when he abandoned the Tour de France during the 14th stage last month. Porto great Jorge Costa dies aged 53 after cardiac arrest

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Former Porto captain Jorge Costa died on Tuesday at the age of 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club's training centre, the Portuguese side said. The former defender, who was serving as Porto's Director of Professional Football in his second season in the role, was rushed to hospital but could not be saved. "Throughout his life, both on and off the pitch, Jorge Costa embodied the values that define FC Porto: dedication, leadership, passion and an unshakeable spirit of conquest," the club said in a statement. "He left his mark on generations of fans and became a symbol of Portismo." Over his career, Costa played 530 games in all competitions - 383 for Porto and 50 for Portugal's national team. Costa earned the nickname "Bicho" (Animal) from teammate Fernando Couto during their partnership in central defence. As captain, he led Porto to UEFA Cup glory in 2003 and a Champions League triumph in 2004 under manager Jose Mourinho. The defender was one of six players to win five consecutive Portuguese league championships with Porto, alongside Aloisio, Drulovic, Paulinho Santos, Rui Barros and Folha. Costa returned to the club in April 2024 as director under new president Andre Villas-Boas. "Jorge Costa's legacy will always remain alive in the memory of all Porto fans. You will never be forgotten, Captain," the club added. REUTERS

Rocchi described the move as a significant step forward in communication between referees and the public, saying the aim was to make officiating decisions quicker and clearer. "We have a select group of officials and we want to ensure the language is as uniform as possible so that decisions can be clear to the public," Rocchi said. The concept of referees explaining decisions to the crowd has also been explored in countries including England and Germany. The Serie A season kicks off on August 23. REUTERS
