Owners of pet lion arrested after it jumped a wall and attacked a woman and two children in Pakistan
The woman and her two young children, aged 5 and 7, were taken to hospital, after being attacked in an alleyway when the lion escaped from a farmhouse in the neighborhood of Johan town on Thursday.
Security camera footage released by police showed the lion leaping over a concrete wall and pouncing on a woman from behind, knocking her to the ground. A man can be seen running out of the property the lion escaped from with an object in hand and chasing the lion away from the woman, before the wild cat takes off further down the road where the children were attacked.
They sustained injuries to their faces and arms but are now in stable condition, according to the Associated Press news agency.
Lahore police said in a video posted to social media that the lion had escaped from an open cage at the farmhouse and that it was recaptured by the owners, who promptly put it in a vehicle and went into hiding in another district.
Muhammad Faisal Kamran, Deputy Inspector General of Lahore Police Operations, said three people were arrested on Friday morning. 'We've also captured the lion and transferred it to Wildlife authorities,' Kamran said.
Lahore police shared an image of three men in a police cell and video of the lion in a cage.
Local media reported that the owner did not have a license to keep the lion and would be prosecuted under the Wildlife Act, meaning they could face a maximum prison term of seven years or a fine equating to $17,500. CNN has sought confirmation from the Punjab Wildlife and Parks department.
Owing wild cats as pets is seen as a status symbol in Pakistan and is not uncommon, but a license is required, and large cats must be kept outside city limits.
'This unfortunate incident highlights how wild animals are often kept in such places without a license, or permission — with no legal procedures followed — endangering the lives of many people,' Kamran said.
The Punjab government announced Sunday that it was undertaking a province-wide crackdown on those keeping lions without a license. So far, 13 lions have been captured and five individuals arrested in connection with violating wildlife regulations.

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani security forces in an overnight raid killed three suspected militants accused of orchestrating last year's attack in which two Chinese nationals working in a textile mill in the southern port city of Karachi were wounded, officials said on Monday. Azad Khan, a senior official with the Counter-Terrorism Department, said the dead insurgents included the alleged mastermind of the November 2024 attack. He identified that person only as Zafran and said he was from the Pakistani Taliban, who are known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP and are allies of the Afghan Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan in 2021. China has repeatedly pressed Pakistan to improve security for its nationals working on major infrastructure projects under Beijing's multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative, which include roads, railways and power plants. Chinese nationals have increasingly come under attack by militant groups, including TTP and the separatist Balochistan Liberation Army — banned by the Pakistani authorities and also designated as terrorist groups by the United States. Pakistan has pledged to bolster security measures for Chinese workers, including those employed at private factories. Meanwhile, at least seven people were killed the previous day in Tirah Valley, a district in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Fiaz Khan, a local government official, said. He said the violence erupted when hundreds of residents gathered outside a military camp to demand protection and justice after a child was killed in a mortar attack on the weekend. The crowd came under gunfire from 'unknown gunmen,' Khan said. He said the demonstrators accused security forces of opening fire when some people were throwing stones at the military camp, but police had yet to determine whose bullets caused the deaths. Khan said gunfire was also reported from nearby hills, and police suspect TTP may have been behind the shooting to sow discord between residents and the military. Pakistan 'honour killing' video sparks national outrage
A viral video showing the so-called honour killing of a couple accused of having an affair has sparked national outrage in Pakistan. The video shows the woman, Bano Bibi, being handed a Koran by a man police have identified as her brother. "Come walk seven steps with me, after that you can shoot me," she says, before walking forward and coming to a halt with her back to the men. Her brother, Jalal Satakzai, then shoots her three times in the back before she falls to the ground. He then shoots and kills the man Ms Bibi was accused of having an affair with, Ehsan Ullah Samalani. After the video, taken in Pakistan's Balochistan province, went viral, police arrested 16 people, including a tribal chief and the woman's mother. The mother, Gul Jan Bibi, said the killings were carried out by family and local elders based on "centuries-old Baloch traditions" and not on the orders of the tribal chief. "We did not commit any sin," she said in a video that also went viral. "Bano and Ehsan were killed according to our customs." She said her daughter, who had three sons and two daughters of her own, had run away with Mr Samalani and returned 25 days later. Police said Ms Bibi's younger brother, who shot the couple, remains at large. Dozens of activists protested in the provincial capital of Quetta on Saturday to demand an end to parallel justice systems. Balochistan's chief minister Sarfraz Bugti said it was a "test" case and vowed to dismantle the illegal tribal courts operating outside the law. Police had said a jirga, an informal tribal council which issues extrajudicial rulings, had ordered the killings. While honour killings in Pakistan were made illegal in 2016, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reported at least 405 in 2024, most of them women killed by relatives claiming to defend family honour.
