
Study analyses intake of ultra-processed foods among South Asian countries

in Chennai, and institutes in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka looked at the relation between consuming ultra-processed foods and
sociodemographic factors
of participants.
The findings, published in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia journal, also show that 41 per cent of participants from south India and Pakistan reported having consumed ultra-processed foods in the 24 hours prior to being surveyed.
These foods involve extensive industrial processing and additives such as added sugars, and are known to heighten risk of obesity, metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.
Data of over 60,700 adults living in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India were analysed.
The participants were recruited for the South Asia Biobank, a UK-based long-term study designed to understand reasons contributing to the high risk of life threatening conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity among South Asians.
Across the four regions studied, ultra-processed foods were found to account for 13-17 per cent of one's total energy intake, with biscuits being a common source.
Other commonly consumed foods included sweetened beverages in Pakistan, packaged salty snacks in south India, and breakfast cereals in Bangladesh, the study found.
Further, younger age was a factor linked with consuming ultra-processed foods in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and older age in Bangladesh and north India -- and women across most regions were more likely to consume these foods.
Consumption also was found to be lower among married people or those living together across the regions studied, compared to those who were single.
The researchers said a 2023 study that examined the link between consuming ultra-processed foods and sociodemographic factors analysed data from 32 countries, but "revealed a significant evidence gap with no studies conducted in
South Asian countries
".
"This is the first study to assess the sociodemographic correlates of (ultra-processed foods) consumption in South Asia, using individual-level dietary recall data in a large population-based study of South Asian adults," according to the study.
"In Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and North India, (nearly) 75 per cent of participants reported consuming (ultra-processed foods) during the previous day, versus 41 per cent in south India and Pakistan," it said.
They added that the study's results provide valuable insights for developing targeted interventions.
The South Asia Biobank is based at Imperial College London and funded by the UK's National Institute for Health Research.

Key findings For every 10 micrograms per cubic metre (μg/m³) increase in PM2.5, the risk of developing dementia rose by 17 percent. A 10 μg/m³ increase in NO₂ was linked to a 3 percent rise in dementia risk. Each 1 μg/m³ increase in soot was associated with a 13 percent higher risk. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter, small enough to enter deep into the lungs and potentially the brain. These particles come from sources such as vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, power plants, wood burning, and construction dust. Some pollutants may reach the brain directly via the bloodstream or through the olfactory nerve, while others may cause indirect effects through the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Unequal exposure The majority of participants in the analysed studies were white and from high-income countries. However, the researchers noted that marginalised and low-income communities, who are more likely to be exposed to air pollution, are underrepresented in research. 'Efforts to reduce exposure to these key pollutants are likely to help reduce the burden of dementia on society,' said co-author Clare Rogowski. Public health implications Globally, over 57 million people are estimated to be living with dementia. That number is projected to rise to 152.8 million by 2050, according to the World Health Organization. While other factors such as age, genetics, diet, and lifestyle play significant roles in dementia risk, researchers argue that environmental policies should be considered part of dementia prevention strategies. The study was funded by the European Research Council and the European Union's Horizon Europe Framework Programme.

However, a new study brings serious concern — 53% of Indian youth are 'personality malnourished'. This study was conducted by Amrut Bang, project director of NIRMAN, who presented three research papers at the Emerging Adulthood Conference held in Charleston, USA, recently. Bang's key paper is based on research involving 4,283 young people between 2021 and 2024. If a youth scored poorly in two-thirds (2/3) of the questions in any one area, they were considered personality malnourished in that domain. The study found that 53% of youth were personality malnourished in four or more areas. Only 9% showed good growth in all seven important areas of life.
