Anglers begin hauling away ice houses as DNR deadlines approach

With a stretch of warm weather ahead, ice house owners are taking their houses off of frozen lakes this week.
In southern Minnesota, the deadline to do so is March 3.
In northern Minnesota, anglers are able to wait until March 17.
PRIOR LAKE, Minn. (FOX 9) - With mild temperatures this week, Mother Nature seems to be making it clear: anglers on frozen lakes around the metro are on borrowed time.

On Monday, many of them pulled ice houses back to dry land.
"[You] kind of just got to play it by day," angler Lane Bauman said. "[I] probably could've waited a couple more days. I just didn't want to risk it. Better to be safe than sorry… with the warm weather coming up, it's getting a little sloppy."
Official deadlines to remove ice houses are fast approaching.
By March 3, houses in southern Minnesota must be off.
People in northern Minnesota have until March 17.
"The ice is getting weaker and weaker, it's getting honeycombs with the sun hitting it," DNR conservation officer Mike Lerchen told FOX 9.
Local perspective
At White Bear Lake, a 2008 Buick Lucerne has been stuck in the ice since Jan. 27. Owner Derek Schimke says he heard the ice cracking and bubbling as he drove through a pressure ridge.
He was able to escape through a window, and now, on Feb. 27, Schimke plans to have the vehicle removed.

Lightning strike burns Lichtenberg figure into grass on Michigan golf course
GAYLORD, Mich. (WGN) — A round of storms on Tuesday night left behind an interesting surprise for groundkeepers at a northern Michigan resort. Groundskeepers at the Treetops Resort's Smith Tradition Golf Course in Gaylord, Michigan, arrived Wednesday morning to find a lightning bolt had struck the course's 11th fairway. But to even greater surprise, the lightning strike left behind a unique branching pattern in the grass. Officials from the resort shared photos of the pattern left behind in a Facebook post on Wednesday morning. 'What you're seeing here is a ground strike that hit the 11th fairway of the Smith Tradition during a lightning storm,' the post read in part. The branching pattern left behind is known as a Lichtenberg figure, which forms when electricity moves through or across an insulating material, like plastic, wood or skin. The figures are the result of a high-voltage electric charge that builds up and suddenly discharges, which creates a path through the material. The rapid movement then leaves behind the pattern. Groundskeepers at the resort do not appear upset with Mother Nature's artwork, as they say lightning strikes can actually be beneficial for the grass. 'Turf tip of the day: Lightning can release nitrogen in the soil, which can actually be very good for the grass. This is why the grass always looks greener the day after a storm,' the post said. Minnesota weather: Rainy start to Friday, flash flood warnings in western part of state
The Brief The soggy start to Friday is bringing flash flood warnings to the western part of Minnesota. The heaviest rainfall is expected to stay just outside the Twin Cities metro this morning, but will transition to weaker and spottier showers this afternoon. Showers will dissipate into scattered cloud cover into Saturday morning. MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Friday morning is starting out with widespread showers across Minnesota and flash flood warnings in some parts of the state. Local perspective Pockets of heavy rainfall are mostly focused in the western part of the state, with a flash flood warning in place for Big Stone County until 9:15 a.m. Friday. Some moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by thunder, is moving through most of the viewing area, including the metro, on Friday morning.
