Phule movie review: Pratik Gandhi, Patralekhaa's Savitribhai-Jyotiba Phule biopic struggles to rise over dull screenplay
It begins with Savitribhai's humanitarian efforts for the people suffering from the Great Plague of Pune (then Poona) and then cuts to a flashback, where Jyotiba, married to the then-child Savitribhai, agrees to educate her despite resistance from his family and community.
Their relationship is one of equality right from the beginning, and Ananth gets the vibe of the biopic right.
Phule will definitely educate many people on these unsung heroes of India, whom we don't talk about enough. Some scenes in the film truly stand out. Like the one where Savitribhai shows a man his place when he tries to intimidate her. Or the courtroom scene where Pratik successfully stands up to a group of Brahmins who object to his attempts to abolish the caste system
Where the film begins to feel weak is cramming in so much into a little more than two hours' runtime. What it leads to is thus one getting exhausted before the intermission. I don't think the makers have left out anything, but it was never meant to be like a history chapter in class X, which faithfully covers everything. What unfolds on screen isn't treated like a film. And by the time the ending is near, one is hoping it will at least wrap up on a poignant note, on time. But again- it stretches on. There's no climax really.
What doesn't help is that both the leading actors, who put in decent efforts, sometimes give in to caricaturish portrayals. The screenplay jumps from one good deed to another, but there's no focus on making us understand these two people.
The attention to detail in the production design is commendable. Rohan-Rohan's music is average, though.
Overall, Phule is a sincere, important film, dulled by an oversimplistic screenplay and treatment.

In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Pratik set the records straight. 'I enjoy the complexities of characters and the stories and all. It challenges me as an actor. I get to dig deeper inside and create something, find newer ways to reach the same emotion. And that is very exciting. It fascinates me as an actor." When asked if controversies now dictate how he chooses his roles, Pratik said that it is always an artistic discretion. He said, 'No, I just go with my gut feeling. Because, on what basis do I decide what will create a controversy? Today, the scenario is such that anything can hurt anyone and people can react in any way. I mean, somebody might have an issue with somebody's name. But what do you do about it? You can't guess that in advance. So if my name is Ramesh and if I do something wrong in the film, all the Rameshs of the country can say, 'We are offended'." When asked whether, as actors, they believe audiences today are more drawn to the human side of an India-Pakistan story rather than its politics, Pratik said, 'We have always been interested in human stories. That's how our culture is, ever since childhood, the kind of stories that we all have heard, be it any story, Raja Rani ki kahaani ho, chahe kisi gaon ki kahani ho, any story that we heard was always rooted in human aspect of it." He went on to add that as a country, Indians are very 'human' in their emotions. He explained, 'That's the reason people say all over the world that Indians are very loud! But, we are full of emotions. And we want to celebrate each and every part of human emotions. This is something that has always resonated with people and across the border also. It was followed by 'Phule', which faced a delay in its release after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asked the makers to remove a couple of scenes that mention caste-related terms. It led to casteist remarks from director Anurag Kashyap and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi President Prakash Ambedkar. 'Phule' was a biographical drama based on the life of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, Savitribai Phule and their relentless struggle to "change the status quo of women, particularly widows and Dalits." Pratik Gandhi said he was not surprised when the movie got embroiled in the controversy, leading to protests in India and a delayed theatrical release. "I didn't expect that, but I was not even surprised when it happened because we are in a time where anything is disturbing anybody, so it's very difficult to gauge, very difficult to react to it," said Pratik Gandhi. The 'Scam 1992' will be next seen in the spy thriller series 'Saare Jahan Se Accha' along with Sunny Hinduja. The actor plays the role of a RAW agent while Sunny Hinduja portrays the character of an ISI chief in the series. Pratik says that the series is a humble tribute to the spy agents around the world. It includes their "moral dilemmas", "stress" and responsibilities regarding the nation's confidential information. While talking about the series, the actor said, "It is mostly a human drama. It talks about their moral dilemmas, their conditions and the stress in which they work. They have to find information and keep it within themselves, which could change the fate of the nation." The actor will be next seen in the biographical series of Mahatma Gandhi. It is directed by Hansal Mehta and stars Pratik Gandhi in the titular role. The 'Dhoom Dhaam' actor shared his excitement for the upcoming series and called it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" in his career. "Very special character. A life-changing experience that way. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an actor to create a character like this. A father of the nation, Mahatma, I mean, we have heard a lot about Gandhi. But the aspect that we are coming to, in season one, is the life of Gandhi, which is not explored much. So, I am excited," said Pratik Gandhi. 'Gandhi' has also been selected for the screening at the 'Toronto International Film Festival' 2025 in a "very carefully curated Primetime slate." It will become the first Indian series to premiere at TIFF 2025. The movie is based on Ramachandra Guha's definitive writings.
