ZULO's new EP 'Z' - a heartfelt love letter to South Africa's enduring spirit

South African rapper and cultural commentator ZULO has made a striking return to the music scene with the release of 'Z', a tightly constructed three-track EP that packs far more than its brief runtime suggests.
Blending elements of faith, cultural homage and hard-earned resilience, 'Z' is a deeply personal and political work - an introspective yet explosive project that sees ZULO claiming his place as a fully formed, unapologetic voice in South African hip hop.
At first glance, the EP might seem minimal in scale, but its emotional and sonic impact is anything but.
Each track is a meticulously crafted chapter in a larger story of identity, legacy, and survival.
With this project, ZULO distils his years of growth - both personal and artistic - into a clear and commanding sound that is equal parts bold, vulnerable and proudly rooted in his South African upbringing.
Anchoring the project is the lead single, 'Sweeter Success', a rhythmically rich, Afrobeats-inspired anthem that carries the warm glow of nostalgia.
Built around a shimmering sample of UPZ's timeless 'Pure Surprise', the song captures a feeling many South Africans know well - that moment when a familiar tune cuts through the noise and anchors you to a place, a memory, a people.
'The fact that you can go to every event in the country and the DJ always drops 'Pure Surprise', that's culture,' says ZULO.
'I needed that feeling. I needed them to feel a memory when listening to this song. It's a cheat code.'
At first glance, "Z" might seem minimal in scale, but its emotional and sonic impact is anything but.

But beneath the track's soulful bounce and catchy melodies lies something more complex. 'Sweeter Success' confronts the often-unseen emotional cost of ambition - the burnout, the sacrifice, the endless grind.
Produced by ZULO himself, with contributions from Miglow and SpiceDrums, the song balances light and darkness, triumph and tension. It's both a celebration and a cry for help.
The EP opens with 'God's Armour', a commanding track that blends gospel undertones with the grit of trap drums and brass instrumentation.
It's a protest song - raw, righteous and rooted in spiritual resistance. ZULO isn't just rapping here; he's bearing witness, channelling divine protection while standing firmly in defiance of societal pressures and inner demons.
The closing track, 'Spaan', brings the project full circle, diving into SA's unhealed wounds.
Sampling Kamazu and laced with a gritty sonic palette, the song touches on the realities of addiction, generational poverty and post-apartheid disillusionment - all through the lens of Coloured South African identity.
It's a fearless reckoning with the past and present, told from the perspective of someone who's lived both.
'These songs are battle cries and war journals,' ZULO explains. ''Z' is everything I've fought through to stand where I am. It's my truth. It's my fingerprint.'
ZULO's musical journey began early. Born and raised in Johannesburg, he first gained attention in high school under the moniker Lil Trix, releasing no fewer than eight mixtapes before matriculating.
His early work earned him radio airplay on YFM and 5FM, as well as a finalist spot on Channel O's 'ShizNiz: King of the Mixtape' - a rite of passage for many rising local hip hop stars.
But as he matured, so did his artistry. Shedding the Lil Trix name, ZULO emerged with a more refined vision - one that prioritises substance over flash, and legacy over virality.
His rebrand marked not only a change in name but a full creative rebirth. With this new identity, he has consistently delivered music that fuses personal narrative with cultural commentary, earning him respect as both a lyricist and a visionary.
Recent singles like 'Adawise', 'JOL', 'Garden', and 'Smaak To Love (Lamza)' laid the foundation for 'Z', offering glimpses of his sonic versatility.

Thembisa rising star turns pain into purpose through music
While not every young Thembisan gets a shot at their dreams, 21-year-old Ngimphiwe Mathebula, better known as Flxppy K, chose to forge his own path. The hip-hop artist uses music as a mirror, a memory, and a mission. While his sound is rooted in rap, his message stretches beyond the beat. 'I've been writing music since Grade Five,' he said. ALSO READ: Thembisa DJ rises in SA music scene while empowering Ivory Park youth 'But it wasn't until 2018 that I finally stepped into a studio to record my first track, Gang Gang. Since then, I've never looked back.' His love of music started at home. Growing up, he often heard his mother playing music, a memory that planted the seeds of inspiration. After her passing, his aunt stepped in as a guiding force, nurturing his growing passion for the craft. 'Music became my therapy, my safe space, and eventually, my voice,' he said. Though hip-hop is at his core, Flxppy K enjoys experimenting with other sounds. ALSO READ: Entities bring musical harmony to locals on May 24 'I love fusing rap with jazz and R&B. But anything related to hip-hop, I'll jump on it. That's where I feel most alive.' His influences range from international icons like Chris Brown, Drake, and Lil Wayne to South African stars such as A-Reece, Nasty C, Shane Eagle, Cassper Nyovest, Maggz, and the late Riky Rick. Each has helped shape his unique sound and drive. A defining moment in his journey occurred when he performed Gang Gang live at Zniko Lounge. 'The energy was crazy. That performance made me believe in myself more than ever,' he said. It was his first radio interview on Poort FM in Pretoria in 2023 that pushed him to take his music more seriously. Since then, he has performed at several local events, though he recently took a step back from the stage to refine his craft. 'I want to come back better, stronger, and more focused,' he said. Behind the scenes, big things are in motion. He's working on a new project titled Blue Note, though details remain under wraps. He's also signed a PR deal with Ghetto Heroes Home Management, a big step toward cementing his place in the industry. Like many independent artists, Flxppy K understands the hustle. 'Getting studio time, funding for marketing, and building a brand from scratch is tough. Especially without a steady income, it can become discouraging,' he said. What keeps him going is the support of those closest to him. ALSO READ: Thembisa comic to feature in Tembisawapopayi music video 'My friends, family, and fans push me forward. Their support reminds me why I started. I gave up studying after high school to pursue music full-time. There's no turning back now.' No matter what you're going through, I want my songs to help you escape, feel better, and believe in yourself.' His goal is to build a career that not only supports himself and his family but also inspires others. 'I want to be the reason a kid from Thembisa starts dreaming big,' he said. Beyond music, he's also dabbling in modelling and fitness. 'I do photoshoots with photographers I collaborate with, and enjoy working out. Staying active keeps me balanced.' What many people don't know is that he comes from a family that runs a home church. 'Even though I'm in the entertainment space, I'm grounded in my faith. I believe in God, and that's a big part of who I am.' His advice for the youth? 'Believe in yourself, even when no one else does. Trust the process, stay consistent, try new things, and never give up.'

Kim Jayde shares how to experience Cannes on a budget
South African media personality and fashion enthusiast Kim Jayde has returned from the prestigious Cannes International Festival of Creativity. She has returned with some fresh insider's guide for South Africans keen to explore the allure of the French Riviera. Partnering with Air France, she shares her top tips to make your trip to Cannes unforgettable. Kim praises Air France as the perfect start to any French adventure. 'The moment you step onto an Air France flight, you experience French hospitality and culture,' she says. Every Business Class passenger is welcomed with a glass of champagne, and even economy passengers are treated to champagne served on board. 'It's a luxurious touch that sets the tone for the journey,' explains Kim. Onboard, she enjoyed classic French documentaries alongside fine red wine and steak, adding to the authentic experience. For accommodation, Kim recommends venturing just 15 minutes outside Cannes to the charming town of Antibes, according to Urban Lifestyle SA. 'It offers beautiful, more affordable options like two-bedroom Airbnbs,' she says. This option is perfect for travellers on a budget wanting to mingle with the C-suite elite visiting Cannes. Given that €1 roughly converts to about R 20, she notes that a train ticket from Antibes to Cannes costs approximately R 140. This is compared to Uber rides ranging between R 520 and R 980. 'Europe's trains are efficient, clean, and air-conditioned, making them a smart choice to navigate,' she advises. Food lovers should not miss the local boulangeries. 'Carry cash for the family-owned bakeries where fresh bread, cheese and cold meats are perfected by the French,' Kim says. She highlights Banana Blue, a quaint restaurant hidden from the main beach strip, famous for its fresh pizza and pasta. 'The French know how to enjoy life, no stress, no rush,' she adds. Beach days in Cannes are a must, with La Plage's Mediterranean waters warming to a pleasant 23°C in summer. Kim suggests visiting the beach around 4 pm when it's cooler, then enjoying sundowners and dinner at nearby cafés as the sun sets as late as 9 pm. When packing, Kim encourages lightweight, breathable fabrics. 'Leave your suits and jeans behind. Think cool linens, cotton shirts, flowy dresses and shorts,' she advises. On the language front, she stresses the importance of polite French greetings. 'Try to greet people in French, and they appreciate the effort,' she says, noting many locals will respond with a smile and helpfully switch to English or suggest Google Translate. Reflecting on her trip, Kim jokes, 'This was my first visit to France, and I fell in love with Cannes. From the food and energy to the safety and the lack of load-shedding or water cuts!' She has already marked her calendar for a 2026 return. Kim concludes, 'Cannes is a magical destination, definitely add it to your bucket list.'
