TMC demands apology from Himanta for ‘writing Bengali as mother tongue' remark
'Where does this hatred stem from? Why this contempt for Bengalis and Bangla?' the TMC wrote in a social media post.
Mr. Sarma had said on Friday that people who seek to replace Assamese with Bengali in the electoral rolls would help the government get an idea about the number of 'foreigners' in the State.
The TMC in a series of social media posts said the Assam Chief Minister has made an 'outrageous claim'. 'Let's remind him: our National Anthem is in Bengali. Our National Song is in Bengali. So when Himanta sings 'Jana Gana Mana' or 'Vande Mataram', does he automatically become an illegal Bangladeshi? By his own twisted logic, shouldn't his citizenship now be questioned?' the party said.
The remarks came days after a Foreigners' Tribunal in Assam issued a notice to Uttam Kumar Brajabasi, a resident of Dinhata in Cooch Behar, declaring him an 'illegal migrant'.
While the TMC and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said Mr. Brajabasi was a resident of the State, the Assam CM said 'Brajabasi is not a citizen of Bengal, where he went temporarily. He is a citizen of Assam'.
TMC leader Sushmita Dev accused Mr. Sarma of 'divisive politics and racial profiling'. 'Bengali is the 7th most spoken language in the world. Yet, under BJP's rule, Bengali-speaking Indians are subjected to racial profiling, targeted harassment, and systematic persecution. By branding Bengalis as 'illegal Bangladeshis', the Assam CM has disgraced the very office he holds. He must apologise immediately,' Ms. Dev said.

Calcutta HC to hear 2 cases on harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in Odisha, Delhi simultaneously on July 16
The Calcutta High Court on Monday said that it would hear two separate cases on alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal in two different states, together this week and not separately. One of the two cases is about the harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal in Odisha, and the second case is about similar harassment in Delhi. It was alleged that these Bengal-speaking migrant workers were harassed by the Odisha and Delhi governments after branding them as illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators. The Odisha-related matter came up for hearing at the Division Bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Reetobroto Kumar Mitra. The Division Bench decided that instead of hearing the Odisha-related matter separately the same would be heard simultaneously and together with the Delhi-related matter on July 16. On Monday, the petitioner in the Odisha-related matter informed the court that most of the workers who were detained in Odisha after being branded as illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators have returned to West Bengal. The petitioner also expressed hope that the complications related to the return of a few other migrant workers from West Bengal who are still in Odisha will be resolved soon. On July 11, the Division Bench of Justice Chakraborty and Justice Mitra directed the Union Home Ministry to submit a report to the court on allegations that some Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal residing in New Delhi have been recently deported to Bangladesh. The Division Bench also directed the West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to contact his counterpart in the Delhi government and also get a report from the state government there on the same matter, which will also have to be submitted to the court. Incidentally, on July 16, the Trinamool Congress will be organising a mega rally in Kolkata to be led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in states outside West Bengal, especially in BJP-ruled states. Besides the main rally in Kolkata, the state's ruling party would also organise similar protest rallies in all the districts.

BJP's John Kumar sworn-in as Puducherry Minister; Opposition criticises move
BJP legislator representing Kamaraj Nagar constituency A. John Kumar, on Monday (July 14, 2025) sworn-in as Minister in the Puducherry Cabinet headed by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy. Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Kumar during a function held at Raj Nivas. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Speaker R. Selvam, Home Minister A. Namassivayam, Minister for Public Works K. Lakshminarayanan, Deputy Speaker P. Rajavelu, legislators belonging to AINRC and BJP were present. Originally a Congressman, Mr. Kumar, who had switched sides a few years ago, was inducted into the Cabinet after A.K. Sai J. Saravanan Kumar resigned following a prior understanding in the BJP at the time of government formation in 2021 to share the Cabinet berth among two of its legislators during government's tenure. Boycott Principal Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Congress boycotted the swearing-in ceremony due to the controversy surrounding the appointment of Mr. Kumar as a Minister. The Opposition had criticised the government for inducting Mr. Kumar as his name had surfaced in Kamatchi Amman Temple land grabbing case. Swearing-in of nominated MLAs Earlier, Speaker R. Selvam inducted three BJP members V. Selvam, E. Theeppainthan and G.N.S Rajasekaran as Members of the Legislative Assembly. The members were nominated by the Ministry of Home Affairs last week. Protest Activists belonging to Hindu Munnani, led by Sanil Kumar, staged a demonstration near Swadeshi Mill complex in Puducherry to oppose the induction of Mr. Kumar in the Cabinet. Talking to reporters, he said the Hindu Munnani had advised the BJP not to induct Mr. Kumar into the Cabinet as he was involved in grabbing the property of Kamatchi Amman Temple. The CB-CID had arrested several officials in connection with the temple land grabbing case. The Madras High Court had even asked Mr. Kumar and his son to subject themselves for the investigation by the CB-CID, he said. 'There is clear evidence to prove that the temple land was grabbed by a group. The BJP did not consider the demand by us not to give him Ministerial berth. When the case is under investigation now, the induction of Mr. Kumar will prove detrimental to the cause taken up by devotees. People will show their anger against those who have grabbed temple land in the next Assembly polls,' he said. Cadre belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) also held a separate protest in the town against AINRC-BJP government for inducting Mr. Kumar and swearing-in of three nominated MLAs. Party secretary S. Ramachandran said a person who was involved in usurping the property of a temple was inducted into the Ministry. Also, there was no need to appoint three nominated legislators as the tenure of the government was coming to end in a few months. 'It is a complete waste of public money,' Mr. Ramachandran said.

Ungaludan Stalin scheme a ploy to collect voters' phone numbers, alleges Palaniswami
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday (July 14, 2025) alleged that the ruling DMK is using the proposed Ungaludan Stalin scheme as a pretext to collect mobile numbers of voters ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the AIADMK Salem Urban and District office at Nedunchalai Nagar, Mr. Palaniswami described the initiative as 'an election drama aimed at voter outreach.' He claimed the scheme's real objective is to collect contact information under the guise of receiving petitions. Government officials are distributing forms for this scheme to every household. 'Through this, they [DMK] are collecting phone numbers and handing them over to the party's IT wing. These numbers will be used to reach out to voters during polling,' he alleged. Questioning the need for the Ungaludan Stalin scheme, he said: 'When Mr. Stalin was the Leader of the Opposition, he collected petitions and claimed they would be addressed after the DMK came to power. If those issues were resolved, why launch this new initiative?' On AIADMK-BJP alliance Responding to Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's criticism of the AIADMK-BJP alliance, Mr. Palaniswami said only the people can judge the strength of any coalition. 'Udhayanidhi Stalin is not an astrologer. We do not need his predictions. He should focus on saving his own party's alliance, which is facing contradictions in the media,' he said. 'The AIADMK-led alliance is strong and will secure a massive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. The AIADMK will form the government on its own,' he asserted. On his ongoing tour across Tamil Nadu, Mr. Palaniswami said the public response indicates growing discontent with the DMK regime. 'People are ready to unseat this government. Corruption is rampant across departments, and the law and order situation has deteriorated,' he claimed. He also alleged that the DMK government is looting natural resources. 'Once the AIADMK returns to power, every act of corruption under the DMK will be thoroughly investigated,' he added. When asked about potential allies, Mr. Palaniswami said many parties are expected to join the AIADMK front closer to the polls. 'There are still eight months left. Closer to election time, more parties will join. Our alliance will be strong and victorious,' he said. Salem Corporators' clash Referring to a clash between AIADMK and DMK councillors during a Salem Corporation council meeting in May, Mr. Palaniswami said, 'Council meetings are meant to discuss people's issues. When the AIADMK representatives raised public concerns, a DMK woman councillor attacked one of our members. Even though we filed a complaint, the police registered cases against our injured councillors. This reflects the state of law and order under the so-called 'Stalin model' government.'
