‘Critical to expose Voter Chori': Rahul Gandhi launches website for public support
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi attached a short video in which he said: 'It is critical that we expose Voter Chori.'
Addressing people in Hindi in the video, Rahul Gandhi goes on to urge people to support the campaign whole-heartedly by visiting its website and help stop the Vote Chori (theft of votes) taking place in the country.
Calling it a fight for the defence of democracy, Rahul Gandhi wrote on X: 'Vote Chori is an attack on the foundational idea of 'one man, one vote'. A clean voter roll is imperative for free and fair elections.'

At an event in Bengaluru on August 8, Rahul Gandhi demanded that the Election Commission of India (ECI) provide the electronic voters' list for the past 10 years along with video recordings. He warned that failure to do so would amount to the ECI concealing electoral fraud and a crime.
The ECI dismissed Rahul Gandhi's assertions as "baseless", maintaining that it remains committed to conducting elections in a fair, impartial, and transparent manner.
The Congress MP's fresh allegation of lapses against the ECI came on the eve of his plan to lead an INDIA bloc march from Parliament House Complex to the office of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Delhi on Monday.
Sources said the Opposition bloc MPs will walk the one km distance to the ECI office and have already sought time for the meeting with the Election Commissioners.
The same day, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will host a dinner for MPs of the INDIA bloc, sources said, as the opposition alliance intensifies its efforts to present a united front against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and alleged large-scale rigging in polls.

The Haryana Congress has taken the first step to set its house in order, announcing a list of presidents for 32 districts late on Tuesday, in what is the party's first organisational revamp at the block- and district-level in over a decade. Through the appointments, which were announced by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal after two earlier deadlines were put off in June and July, the Congress has attempted to balance two rival party factions – the one led by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and the other by Sirsa MP Kumari Selja. The party has also tried to balance caste equations by attempting to shun its pro-Jat image, and to sharpen its focus on rural and urban outreach. 'I want to convey my best wishes to all the new appointees. The new district chiefs will ensure that the Congress is rejuvenated and has a new-found strength on the ground,' Hooda said. Around 15 of the new district chiefs are said to be from the Hooda camp while 12 are seen to be close to Selja. A known detractor of the former CM, Shamsher Singh Gogi, who is seen to be close to Selja, said the appointments were made 'purely on the basis of merit'. 'The new chiefs have been appointed on the basis of the workers' performance. They will give immense strength to the party at the grassroots-level. We are all party workers and will work together,' he said. In a bid to counter Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's influence, who belongs to the OBC community, the party has picked 10 OBC faces as district chiefs. Six others are Jats and five each belong to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Brahmin communities. The Punjabi, Rajput, Muslim and Sikh communities are represented by one member each. In cities like Ambala, the party has appointed three district chiefs – city, rural and urban – while it has gone for two district presidents (urban and rural) in nine districts. Three Congress candidates – Parvinder Pari (Ambala Cantt), Anirudh Chaudhary (Bhiwani Rural) and Vardhan Yadav (Gurugram Rural) – who lost last year's Assembly polls also made the cut. The appointments come two months after Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met the state leadership in Chandigarh, where he said candidates who work for the party and 'not a particular leader' must be identified and shortlisted for the posts of district presidents. Following the meeting, held as a part of the party's nationwide Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, AICC Haryana in-charge B K Hariprasad announced a list of 69 observers, who were tasked with building the party's organisational cadre across the state. Since it first lost power to the BJP in 2014, the party's state unit has been riven with fissures, with five AICC in-charges appointed in the last six years. Senior BJP leader and minister Anil Vij said little seems to have changed. Likening the process of appointing district presidents in the Congress to 'distribution of ghee agency rights', Vij said, 'In democratic parties, elections are first held at the block level, then at the district, state, and finally the national-level. However, in the Congress, the process starts from appointing a national (ghee) distributor, then state-level distributors, and finally district-level distributors. Trump's takeover of DC police: Can he, why now, and is it necessary?
United States President Donald Trump has announced that he is temporarily taking control of the Washington, DC, police department, while deploying 800 National Guard troops to the city, saying the measures are needed to 'rescue' the US capital from a surge in crime. During a 78-minute news conference, Trump declared that the US government would take control of the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department to address what he called 'surging crime.' 'I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse,' Trump said, joined by US Attorney General Pam Bondi, who will oversee the force. 'This is Liberation Day in DC, and we're going to take our capital back. We're taking it back.' 'Under the authorities vested in me as the President of the United States, I'm officially invoking section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act… and placing the DC Metropolitan and Police Department under direct federal control,' he said. He also announced the deployment of the National Guard: 'I'm deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order and public safety in Washington, DC, and they're going to be allowed to do their job properly.' Trump added he intends to remove the capital's homeless population, without giving details. The 1973 law granted DC a degree of self-government, allowing residents to elect a mayor and council, while keeping certain powers with Congress and the president. The Act allows the president to take control of the police if 'special conditions of an emergency nature exist.' Trump previously threatened to do this in 2020. The president can take control for 48 hours, or up to 30 days if Congress is notified. Trump said he plans to extend the takeover beyond 48 hours. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser pushed back: 'Let me be clear. Chief Pamela Smith is the chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, and its 3,100 members work under her direction. Nothing about our organisational chart has changed. And nothing in the executive order would indicate otherwise.' The US Army said 'between 100-200 soldiers will be supporting law enforcement at any given time,' handling administrative, logistics, and public safety tasks. The Guard will operate under Title 32 status — federally funded but locally controlled — and not bound by the Posse Comitatus Act. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said Guard units will begin arriving this week, likely without openly carrying rifles, though weapons will be accessible. Hegseth said the Pentagon was 'prepared to bring in other National Guard units – other specialised units.' When asked about removing homeless people, Hegseth said: 'Our job is to stand alongside law enforcement.' Trump's order states that 'rising violence in the capital now urgently endangers public servants, citizens, and tourists' and disrupts government functions. It calls DC 'among the most violent jurisdictions in the United States.' The move appears linked to the August 3 assault on Edward Coristine, a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer and protege of Elon Musk. Police say 10 teenagers attacked Coristine and his partner; two 15-year-olds were arrested. Days later, Trump wrote on Truth Social: 'If DC doesn't get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run.' He added that the takeover 'should have been done a long time ago.' Mayor Bowser questioned the need for the National Guard, suggesting more funding for prosecutors would be more effective. 'It is true that those were more challenging times related to some issues. It is also true that we experienced a crime spike post-COVID, but we worked quickly to put laws in place and tactics that got violent offenders off our streets, and gave our police officers more tools,' she said. According to Bowser, violent crime is now at a 30-year low. DC crime statistics show violent offences fell from 2023 to 2024, with 2025 continuing the trend: homicides down 12 per cent, assaults with dangerous weapons down 20 per cent.
