New Lidl supermarket approved for west Wicklow
The proposed new supermarket was planned for a site at Parkmore House in Weaver's Square.
Planners raised issues related to the scale of the single-storey design, the proposed car parking layout and the underutilisation of town-centre-zoned land.
Council officials believed the development did not represent a compact or high-quality use of the site and was inconsistent with the objectives of the Wicklow County Development Plan 2022–2028.
Following the council's decision, Lidl appealed the ruling which has now been upheld.
The news will be welcomed by local campaign group 'Baltinglass needs a Supermarket (Aldi/Lidl)', which was started five years ago to address the issue.
More than 1,500 people are members of the Facebook page, which outlines how residents are forced to travel to Tullow, Carlow or Athy to shop at a low-cost supermarket.
The group has praised Wicklow TD Edward Timmins for his support of the campaign.
Speaking on Friday, he said: 'This is welcome news and will give consumers further choices for shopping.'

Aldi make permanent change to one store and fans are mad fer it
Aldi have permanently changed their name in a shop in Greater Manchester, with some fans calling it 'biblical.' With the Oasis tour in full swing after the band announced their reunion, the Gallagher fronted fivesome played five colossal dates in their hometown when they went to Heaton Park. In honour of the gigs and the Manchester accent, Aldi have changed the name of their Prestwich store — which is near Heaton Park — to 'Aldeh.' Pic: Dave Phillips/PinPep While the change was only meant to be temporary, fans enjoyed the name change so much, including taking pictures outside of it, that it prompted Bury MP Christian Wakefield started a petition to keep the name change which received over 1,300 signatures. 'What started as a nod to a special reunion quickly took on a life of its own. The rebrand resonated with people across Manchester and beyond,' Ms Wakefield said. 'Photos of the sign went viral because it tapped into something meaningful: pride in where we're from, and in what this city has given the world. In short, Prestwich got its own Blue Plaque.' Aldi were on board with the brand change — with the shop itself since being rebranded on Google Maps as a cultural landmark — but said that they needed 10,000 likes on social media as well as a comment from one of the Gallaghers giving their blessings. The rebrand has proven popular with Mancunians, Oasis fans, and Mancunian Oasis fans alike. Pic: Dave Phillips/PinPep The post got 15,000 likes, and while they didn't get a comment, Liam shared a screenshot of the shop on his Instagram, with Noel's daughter Anaïs commenting on the post (they said they needed a Gallagher, not necessarily Noel or Liam!) As a result, the name change in the shop will be permanent; with Aldi UK Chief Executive Giles Hurley writing on LinkedIn 'Last week, a petition was launched by a local resident calling for us to keep the sign. 'So naturally, we took to social media to see what our shoppers thought, turns out… people are mad for it and want the sign to stay.' Liam Gallagher appeared to enjoy the rebrand, as did Noel's daughter Anaïs. Pic: Dave Phillips/PinPep 'I'm pleased to announce that we'll be keeping the Aldeh sign as a tribute to Manchester! As you were.' 'We've been blown away by the public's reaction to 'Aldeh,'' Julie Ashfield, Aldi's Chief Commercial Officer added. 'What started as a fun, temporary tribute to Oasis and the local accent has turned into something far bigger. 'We've heard shoppers loud and clear and we're absolutely delighted to keep the sign up for the long haul.'
