Taylor Fritz gets through another late-night five-setter to reach 3rd round at Wimbledon

NBC Sports11 hours ago
LONDON — Late-night finishes and five-set matches are becoming a habit for Taylor Fritz at this year's Wimbledon.
This time, though, he managed to wrap up his win over Gabriel Diallo before the match was suspended — making sure the fifth-seeded American won't have to come back on court for a fourth straight day.
Fritz overcame a bloodied elbow to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (0), 4-6, 6-3 on No. 1 Court on Wednesday.
That was a day after he finished off another five-set win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a match that was halted on Monday night at about 10:15 p.m. after Fritz forced a fifth set, with Wimbledon's 11 p.m. curfew looming.
He completed the win over Diallo a little later than that on Wednesday.
'That's an incredibly hard match,' Fritz said. 'The fourth set that I lost, I really don't think there's much I did wrong at all.'
Fritz sustained a cut to his elbow after diving to reach a ball when he had break point while trailing 3-2 in the fourth set. While he returned the ball, Diallo won the point and went on to hold serve.
Now Fritz is looking forward to finally getting a day off.
'Tomorrow is going to be a very, a very light hit. I think I've played plenty of tennis,' he said. 'I'm very due a nice, relaxing day.'

Mom, apple pie and the Savannah Bananas — America at its rollicking best

Major League Baseball is currently debating various rules changes to improve the game — when what it really needs is more players wearing capes and doing backflips. That, at least, is the lesson of the Savanah Bananas, the barnstorming team that has come up with a madcap version of baseball that's widely popular and is selling out stadiums around the country. The Bananas, or the Nanners as devotees call them, sold out Clemson University's Memorial Stadium back in April, with 81,000 in attendance. Advertisement Tickets for a couple of Nanner games at Yankee Stadium in September are selling on secondary sites at rates significantly higher than any Yankees game. Who's Yankee ace Max Fried compared to Dakota Stilts, the Bananas pitcher who bestrides the mound standing at 10 feet and 9 inches on, yes, stilts? Advertisement The Bananas and their handful of spin-off clubs have made America's pastime even more American. Banana Ball, now on what it calls a 'world tour,' is the baseball equivalent of the carnival coming to town. It taps into the barnstorming baseball tradition that goes back to the 19th century, into the antic spirit of minor-league baseball with its corny entertainment between innings, and into the showmanship of the Harlem Globetrotters. Twerking and behind-the-back catches are encouraged. Advertisement The Savanah Bananas were originally part of the Coastal Plain League, a summer league for college ballplayers. When the team's exhibition games with modified rules proved more popular than their staid standard fare, they went all-exhibition. We associate baseball with lazy summer afternoons, but there's nothing lazy about Banana Ball. It takes everything dull or overly subtle about baseball and smashes it underfoot, while dancing to a pop song. Advertisement At the end of the day, does anyone besides the true connoisseur enjoy seeing a batter try to bunt? In Banana Ball, bunting is strictly prohibited and any attempt will get the offending batter ejected from the game. Then, there are walks. Who walks in a real sport? What is this, golf? In Banana Ball, after the pitcher issues a base-on-balls, every fielder besides the pitcher and catcher has to touch the ball before the runner can be tagged out. This creates an incentive for runners to actually run out of the batter's box — and very often they reach second base. Banana Ball, correctly, views incessant and unnecessary delay as the enemy of fan engagement. Batters can't step out of the batter's box. There are no visits to the mound. Advertisement The game is timed and can't last more than two hours. (MLB has taken steps in this direction with the wondrously successful innovation of the pitch clock, but can still do more to hustle things along.) In loud and intense football stadiums, the fans are called 'the 12th man.' Advertisement In Banana Ball, the fans are literally the tenth fielder — if one of them catches a foul ball on the fly, the batter is out. 'Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America,' the French-American historian Jacques Barzun famously wrote, 'had better learn baseball.' Intellectuals aren't going to rhapsodize about Banana Ball, but it says something about America, too. Its popularity shows how much we prize speed, constant entertainment — and, oh yeah, viral moments on social media (which Banana Ball provides in abundance). Advertisement Kids, in particular, love it. Banana Ball isn't a sacrilege against the game, any more than wiffle ball or beer-league softball are. It is a popularization of baseball and an advertisement for it, demonstrating how a game that is perceived as dull and uneventful can be the occasion for rollicking fun. Advertisement We won't be arguing decades from now about who was the best Banana Ball player of this era. We can enjoy the spectacle all the same. The supposed inventor of baseball, Abner Doubleday, got much right. So who can blame him for not realizing how much the game could be enhanced by adding musical numbers and having pitchers throw from trampolines? Twitter: @RichLowry

Dayana Yastremska of the Ukraine made quick waves at Wimbledon. Yastremska upset American major champion Coco Gauff in the first round. The 5-foot-7, 25-year-old was ranked 42nd entering the grass Grand Slam event. She had made it through to a semifinal in a major once, that being the 2024 Australian Open. Yastremska's best Wimbledon performance to date was the Round of 16 in 2019. She gained the third round with a win over Anastasia Zakharova in a match that went to a third-set tiebreak. Yastremska has won three WTA titles and more than $5,000,000 in her career. Ofner gets the break

Follow our reactions from day four at SW19 with Sinner, Djokovic, Andreeva and Świątek into the third round Getty Images Paul 6-1, 5-7, 2-3* Ofner And just like that, Sebastian Ofner gets the break. That might be the momentum change he needed to take control of this match. FINAL: Zakharova 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (10) Yastremska After dropping the first set, Dayana Yastremska came back to defeat Anastasia Zakharova in a grueling match to advance to the third round. Getty Images Paul 6-1, 5-7, *2-2 Ofner This match looks like it's settling in to a long one, depending on the health of both players: Tommy Paul's ankle vs. Sebastian Ofner's wrist. They both looked like they could have defaulted at the time of their issues, but we're now tied early in the third set. Getty Images Świątek 5-7, 6-2, *4-0 McNally BANG. A double break for Iga Świątek and despite huge, repeated efforts on the defensive from Caty McNally, it's just not cutting it right now. Two more games between Świątek and the third round, where Danielle Collins awaits… Świątek 5-7, 6-2, 3-0* McNally This is much better from Świątek, and it feels like she might have ground down Caty McNally here. For the third time in this match, Świątek breaks McNally in the second game of a set — but this time, you wonder if it might be decisive. Paul 6-1, 5-7, *0-0 Ofner Ofner finished off the second set with his third straight game one, and we're even at a set each. Paul looked a little unsure after he came back from the injury and the retaping of his foot. He'll need to bounce back quickly now. Draper 4-6, 0-2* Čilić This is getting dangerous for No. 4 Draper. Čilić breaks his serve again after an unforced error. You can see Čilić's confidence continue to build. Getty Images Everyone's a bit in shock here on No. 1 Court. Marin Čilić has just pinched the first set 6-4 against the world No. 4 and great home hope, Jack Draper. Deja Vu from last year when Draper was beaten on this court at the same stage in straight sets by Cameron Norrie. A big problem for Draper is that Čilić's best shot is his backhand, which is neutralising Draper's favored serve on the ad side that swings away over to that wing for a right-hander. Draper tried it down set point, and Čilić responded with a clean backhand winner. Čilić is ranked down at No. 83 following a lengthy absence last year after knee surgery but he's a former U.S. Open champion and a finalist here, and this is a proper contest. Paul 6-1, 5-6* Ofner Tommy Paul looked like he was moving fine after the return from injury, but Sebastian Ofner has won the past two games and has a chance to serve for the second set. Draper 4-6, 0-0* Čilić Big-time shot from Čilić, lacing a backhand down the line to win the game and the set. How will the No. 4 seeded Draper respond in the second set? Paul 6-1, *4-4 Ofner Tommy Paul had his left foot retaped, and he's back out on the court after a nine-minute break. His movement is such a big part of his game, so we'll see how hampered he is. Draper 4-4* Čilić Draper was in danger of being broken, which would've drastically shifted the momentum of the first set. Instead, he rallies from triple game point to even the set at four games apiece. Getty Images Świątek 5-7, 6-2, *0-0 McNally And there it is. Iga Świątek breaks Caty McNally again, and that not only wins the second set but also gives her the opening service game of the decider. McNally takes a toilet break after losing her lead on Centre Court. Paul 6-1, *4-4 Ofner Tommy Paul is injured and getting medical treatment after suffering a foot injury on an overhead. Looks like a tough break for the American who had just broken back to get even in the second set. Getty Images Świątek 5-7, 5-2* McNally It's been a much better set from Iga Świątek, who has ironed out the errors and taken charge of Caty McNally. Still up a solitary break, but now Świątek is just a game away from leveling the match. McNally now serving to stay in the second set. FINAL: Starodubtseva 2-6, 1-6 Samsonova Strong showing by Liudmila Samsonova, dispatching of Yuliia Starodubtseva in straight sets to advance to the third round. FINAL: Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 Dolehide Impressive shot by Krejčíková to seal the set and the match. She paints a firm backhand just inside the backline and all Dolehide could do is watch. While the final set score appears lopsided, this was a highly competitive match with Krejčíková's break a few games back serving as the difference. Getty Images Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, *4-2 Dolehide If there was ever a time to break serve, that was it. A few unforced errors by Dolehide just swung this match in the latter stages. Can Krejčíková see this one out? Paul 6-1, *0-2 Ofner Sebastian Ofner turned the tables on Tommy Paul a bit to start the second set. Ofner broke Paul to start the set and held his first service game. He already has won more games in this second set than the first set after getting some medical treatment on his wrist between sets.
