Penang is taking steps to lead regional action in addressing climate change and its economic and social impact.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the state would host the Penang Green Summit 2025 from Oct 31 to Nov 1 at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre.
He said the event, themed 'Moving Towards Sustainable Energy', would merge purpose, partnership and policy in climate leadership, and energy transition.
'The Penang Green Summit 2025 is more than a continuation – it's an evolution.
'We are living in a time of climate emergency. We will not wait, we will step up,' he said during a press conference at Komtar.
Chow, who is also Penang Green Council (PGC) chairman, pointed out that the hottest year ever recorded was 2024 when global temperatures reached 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels.
He said rising sea levels, floods, heatwaves and disruptions to food security were part of unpredictable weather.
'Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue but also an economic, social, and public health challenge.
'If we fail to act decisively, we risk the very well-being of our current and future generations,' he cautioned.
Chow said PGC had since 2011 been pushing for public awareness, green certification, policy advocacy, and industry enablement.
'Last year, we launched the Penang Energy Framework for clean, secure and efficient energy, with a focus on renewables and energy efficiency,' he said.
The upcoming summit will be the state's next step in terms of moving from the planning to implementation stages, he added.
The two-day event will bring together decision-makers, industry leaders, academics, innovators and public sector players for dialogue, alignment and action.
As part of the summit, the state government will also host a Green Gala Dinner to recognise leaders in sustainability.
The dinner will also be a platform for industries to exchange ideas, forge partnerships and explore green solutions.
PGC general manager Josephine Tan said the state was advancing its renewable energy agenda through action plans.
'Each programme is tied to clear sectoral objectives and all are progressing as planned.
'These initiatives underscore our dedication to building a low-carbon future,' she said, reaffirming Penang's continuous push towards sustainability.
Also present during the press conference were Penang environment committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo and Seberang Perai mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid.

After Apples And Oranges, MoF Announces Exemption For Beauty Services From Service Tax Expansion
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Finance (MoF) announced today that, after carefully considering public sentiment, it has decided not to proceed with the proposed expansion of the Service Tax to beauty services such as manicures and pedicures, facial services, and barbers and hairdressers. The MoF said all revisions to the expanded Sales Tax and Service Tax were made after taking into account feedback from the public and industry. 'Since the announcement on June 9, 2025 regarding the revision of the Sales Tax and Service Tax (SST), the MADANI Government has closely followed feedback received from the rakyat and engaged with industry on the proposed expansion of the SST." In addition, the Ministry also engaged a number of backbenchers yesterday as part of its efforts to understand feedback from the grassroots, it said in a statement here today. Select imported fruits to be exempt from Sales Tax To recap, after due consideration of feedback received regarding the Sales Tax on imported fruits, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has agreed to exempt imported apples, oranges, mandarin oranges and dates from the Sales Tax. The MoF reiterated that the MADANI Government has not imposed Sales Tax on daily essential goods in order to mitigate pressure on the cost of living for the majority of Malaysians. These tax-exempted essential goods, whether locally produced or imported, include rice, chicken, beef, vegetables and eggs. Local fish varieties, including selar, tongkol, cencaru, and sardines, whether frozen, chilled or fresh, will also continue to be exempt from Sales Tax.

MoF exempts beauty services from tax after public feedback
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has decided against extending the Service Tax to beauty services, including manicures, pedicures, facials, and hairdressing, following public feedback. The decision comes after extensive consultations with industry players and grassroots representatives. In a statement today, the MoF clarified that all revisions to the Sales and Service Tax (SST) were made after considering public sentiment. 'Since the June 9, 2025 announcement on SST revisions, the MADANI Government has actively reviewed feedback from the rakyat and engaged with industry stakeholders,' the ministry said. Additionally, imported fruits such as apples, oranges, mandarin oranges, and dates will remain exempt from Sales Tax. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim approved the exemption after evaluating public concerns. The MoF emphasised that essential goods, including rice, poultry, vegetables, and local fish varieties, will continue to be tax-free to ease living costs. To support small businesses, the annual sales threshold for Service Tax registration has been raised from RM500,000 to RM1 million for leasing, rental, and financial services. This adjustment aims to reduce the burden on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The MoF urged the public and businesses to refer to official announcements for accurate SST-related information. Queries can also be directed to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department's SST Call Centre.
