Dalai Lama's 90th birthday celebrations underway with politicians, celebrities in attendance

India Gazette8 hours ago
Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 6 (ANI): At the 90th birthday celebrations of the 14th Dalai Lama held at the Tsuglagkhang temple in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, with Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh and other dignitaries
The dignitaries seated on the dais along with the Tibetan spiritual leader included Hollywood actor Richard Gere.
Tibetan and Indian national anthems.were played on the occasion.
Monks, devotees, and international guests gathered for the celebration to honour the life and teachings of the Dalai Lama, who is widely regarded as a global symbol of compassion, non-violence and interfaith harmony.
Meanwhile, Tibetan Buddhist monks living in exile offered special prayers at the Dorjidak Monastery near Shimla at Panthaghati this morning to mark the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama.
The occasion was marked by solemn rituals, long-life prayers, and symbolic offerings led by a young boy monk, Nawang Tashi Rapten, recognised as the reincarnation of the Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche, the head of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. The boy monk also cut a ceremonial cake as part of the celebrations, offering prayers for the spiritual leader's long life.
Explaining the significance of the day, Tibetan Buddhist monk Kunga Lama expressed both joy and reverence.
'As a Tibetan Buddhist, I would say this celebration of the birthday of the Dalai Lama is not only a celebration, but also he is the identity of the Tibetan community, Tibetan unity, monks, and the leader of the whole culture of peace and compassion,' Kunga Lama said.
'It is our responsibility to carry out what he says as Buddhists. As I already said, he is the identity of the Tibetan community. Another thing I would like to say is that he has always been a guide to the world with compassion and love. Most of us follow his way, what he preaches,' he said.
'We are offering prayers here for the long life of the Dalai Lama and also for those who are suffering in the whole of Himachal due to flooding, and also those suffering all around the world. We are trying to follow the Dalai Lama's path. Definitely, it's not only important for me; the Dalai Lama has to continue the lineage not just for me but for the whole world,' he said.
'The little boy monk here is not only an ordinary monk; he is the reincarnation of Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche, who will be the head of the Nyingma school in the future. He just offered prayers and cut the cake for the long life of the Dalai Lama. On one hand, it is a happy moment for us; on the other, I cannot fully express it, as he is growing old, but we depend on hope,' the Buddhist monk further said.
The Dalai Lama, born as Lhamo Dhondup on July 6, 1935, in Takster, a small farming village in northeastern Tibet, was recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of two. He was formally installed as the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet on February 22, 1940, and was given the name Tenzin Gyatso.
The term 'Dalai Lama' is Mongolian, meaning 'Ocean of Wisdom'. In Tibetan Buddhism, Dalai Lamas are considered manifestations of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, an enlightened being who chooses to be reborn to serve all sentient beings.
After the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1949, the Dalai Lama assumed full political authority in 1950. He was forced to flee into exile in March 1959 following the violent suppression of the Tibetan uprising. He has since lived in India, along with over 80,000 Tibetan refugees, continuing to advocate for peace, non-violence, and compassion.
For over six decades, His Holiness has been a global ambassador of Buddhist philosophy, compassion, peace, and interfaith harmony, continuing to inspire millions worldwide.
Celebrations were held across Tibetan settlements in India and abroad, with many also expressing hope that the Dalai Lama's lineage will continue through a recognised reincarnation in the future. (ANI)

Amitabh Bachchan's co-star had acted in 500 films but couldn't own a house or car. He was actress Zeenat Aman's relative

He was seen alongside the biggest legends in Indian cinema — from Mughal-E-Azam to Do Bigha Zamin — but veteran character actor Murad , who acted in over 500 films, never owned a house or a car. In a sobering reminder of how fame doesn't always translate to financial security, his son, actor Raza Murad, opened up in a recent interview about the difficult realities behind the glamorous façade of showbiz. The anecdote is not only a tribute to his father's legacy but also a cautionary tale about the importance of financial planning. Speaking on the Filmy Charcha YouTube channel, Raza Murad shared that despite his father's prolific career and iconic filmography, their family faced severe financial constraints. He mentioned witnessing 'difficulties in life' and experiencing poverty. Recalling his childhood in Bhopal, he added that their home didn't even have electricity and that he would have to study for his exams under a lamp post. He would start at midnight and finish at 6 am. Raza Murad's father, Murad, known for his roles in films like Devdas (1955), Sanyasi, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, and Tarzan Goes to India (1962), was one of the most sought-after character actors of his era. Yet, Raza revealed that they 'never had a car' and 'used to live in a rented house.' He pointed out how many celebrated stars from the 1950s and 60s failed to save for the future and were left struggling in their later years. According to him, those actors should have planned for the future. While Raza made it clear that he had no intention to criticise his father's choices — 'he lived like he wanted to' — he said that he chose a different path after witnessing those struggles. Hence, the first thing he did after establishing himself in the film industry was to buy a house. Interestingly, the veteran actor was also related to Bollywood icon Zeenat Aman — she is his niece.

Rajinikanth's Coolie Took Over My Life For 2 Years, Says Lokesh Kanagaraj: 'No Friends, No Family'

Last Updated: Lokesh Kanagaraj reveals he spent two years doing nothing but working on Rajinikanth's Coolie, calling it his most intense and personal filmmaking journey yet. One of the most anticipated Tamil films in recent times, Coolie—featuring an explosive cast including Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Aamir Khan, and Shruti Haasan—is shaping up to be a potential box office juggernaut. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the high-octane action thriller is slated to hit the big screen on August 14, and expectations are sky-high. For Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie isn't just another film—it's a passion project that has consumed the last two years of his life. In fact, the filmmaker has gone so deep into the making of this cinematic spectacle that he has even stepped away from social media to focus entirely on the film. In a recent conversation with Filmyscoops, Lokesh got candid about his personal sacrifices while working on Coolie. 'The last 2 years all I did was Coolie. No family, no friends, and nothing. My 36 and 37 years of life, all I did was Coolie," he shared, underscoring the intense dedication he brought to the project. And that commitment seems to be paying off already. According to Pinkvilla, the film has made history even before its release by sealing the biggest overseas rights deal ever for a Tamil film. Hamsini Entertainment has acquired the international distribution rights for a record-breaking Rs. 86 crore, signaling massive anticipation across global markets. A source close to the development added, 'This is the biggest deal of all time for a film from the Tamil Film Industry. The makers have procured record MGs despite a clash with War 2." Adding to the frenzy is a special appearance by Bollywood icon Aamir Khan, who will be seen in a spectacular cameo in Coolie. But the collaboration doesn't end there. Aamir has officially confirmed that he is set to team up with Lokesh Kanagaraj for a full-fledged superhero film after wrapping up his next project with Rajkumar Hirani. 'Yes, it is (a superhero film). I am very excited for the film because Lokesh is an amazing director," Aamir told Pinkvilla. 'The film will start next year in the second half, once I am done with the Raju (Rajkumar Hirani) film. I think we will start shooting for it in September 2026." With a dream cast, a visionary director, and already record-shattering deals in place, Coolie is poised to be not just a cinematic event, but a cultural milestone in Tamil and Indian cinema.
