
Postbank responds to card cloning scam
The bank is calling on affected individuals to immediately report any suspicious activity or suspected card cloning to its fraud department.
This comes after an 84-year-old pensioner from Montclair lost R8400 of her grant in a suspected card cloning scam. The SUN published a story about Laurel Prangley's financial loss last week. To read more click here.

Postbank has urged grant beneficiaries to report suspected fraud and unauthorised transactions directly to its fraud department, which is responsible for investigating and resolving such matters.
'Postbank has implemented a multi-layered fraud prevention framework aligned with banking industry standards and legal requirements under the Banks Act and the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. This includes card chip security, internal controls, and ongoing customer due diligence.
'The creation of robust customer awareness is also amongst the initiatives we are undertaking, given that some bank fraud incidents are perpetrated by criminals through scams that take advantage of customers,' read the statement.
Prangley's daughter Rene Gleisner told The SUN that the issue was discovered in February when her husband attempted to withdraw the pension from an ATM but received a slip indicating insufficient funds.
She believes the fraud may be linked to the card transition process. 'It's suspicious that this started while I was changing my mother's Sassa gold card to the new black Postbank card,' she said.
The family had visited Chatsworth shopping centre early this year, where two employees believed to be Sassa officials were assisting beneficiaries with the card switchover.

However, Postbank stated that it has not yet received a formal complaint from either the pensioner or her daughter.
'No formal report has been submitted to the Postbank fraud department regarding Prangley's card. As such, we cannot confirm any deactivation until the appropriate process has been followed. We have contacted the client and advised her to complete necessary documentation in line with our internal processes to enable necessary investigations,' said Postbank.
Postbank said once an investigation is initiated they:
Take various remedial steps including blocking the compromised card,
Issue a replacement card, and safeguarding account credentials.
'These steps are guided by internal fraud protocols and customer protection measures,' Postbank said in a statement.
In February, Sassa and Postbank announced the transition from the gold card to a new black card system.
Postbank could not comment on whether Prangle's ID or card details had been cloned or compromised during the card migration process.
'This possibility cannot be confirmed without a formal report and investigation. However, the card migration process adheres to stringent encryption and security protocols, including Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard and chip-based security features, to mitigate cloning risks,' Postbank said.

Once a report is received, Postbank can implement remedial actions such as account or card blocking, issue a new card, and ensure secure disbursement of future grants.

Clients typically receive an acknowledgement and reference number within 48 hours of submitting a valid complaint. The overall resolution timeframe depends on the complexity and available evidence, but regular updates are provided throughout the process.

Once a case is formally lodged, Postbank will issue a reference number and provide ongoing updates to the client throughout the investigation, in line with our customer communication protocols and conduct standards.

A former Post Office manager in Mpumalanga has lost over R100 000 of her pension payout for defrauding SASSA beneficiaries without their knowledge. Lucia Mashego, a wheelchair bound former Shatale Post Office branch manager in Bushbuckridge colluded with a teller, Thandeka Dibakwane, and a private person, Precious Nyathi, to steal from SASSA beneficiaries without their knowledge. FORMER POST OFFICE MANAGER LOSES PENSION OVER DEFRAUDING SASSA BENEFICIARIES According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (also known as the Hawks), Mashego made duplicate SASSA cards that were given to Dibakwane, who handed them to Nyathi to unlawfully withdraw money from different ATMs. Hawks spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi said the SASSA beneficiaries suffered an actual loss of R250 000 that was unlawfully withdrawn from their accounts. Nkosi said upon noticing the illicit activities, Virginia Phoku, another post office teller, took advantage of the situation and made herself duplicate cards. Phoku was found guilty and sentenced to two years imprisonment suspended for five years on condition that she is not convicted of a similar offence in January. 'Mashego pleaded guilty on all 60 fraud charges on 27 May. She was sentenced to eight years imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that she is not convicted of a similar offence. The court further ordered the Asset Forfeiture Unit to recover R146 897,05 from her pension fund,' Nkosi explained. Meanwhile, the former Post Office manager's accomplices, Dibakwane and Nyathi, are expected to appear before the Commercial Crime Court on Wednesday, 13 August. The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Major General Nico Gerber issued a strong warning to people in authority not to abuse their powers for self-enrichment at the expense of the most needy. Agency sets record straight on SASSA Old-Age Grant deductions
Numerous complaints about unauthorised SASSA Old-Age Grant deductions has the agency reaching out to beneficiaries. SASSA CEO Themba Matlou said this past week that the agency has no authority to make any SASSA Old-Age Grant deductions. So, why has there been such a spate of this occurring in the last month? Image: File By way of clarification, the South African Social Security Agency assures clients that it is not allowed to make deductions without notifying the recipient beforehand and receiving consent. If you have not received your full grant amount for the month of August, you must contact SASSA immediately to rectify the situation. Recently, several SASSA beneficiaries have come forward alleging that their grants are arriving with R165 already deducted, reports The Citizen . Due to the sheer number of complaints, the concern is that this has moved beyond a few isolated incidents and there are nefarious actors at play. You should never have any money deducted from your SASSA payment without giving consent beforehand. Image: File 'I can tell you outright that we are not allowed to make SASSA Old-Age Grant deductions from a beneficiary without their consent. That is the regulation. Your money is your money. Once we give you the money, we have no control over that,' clarified Matlou. 'However, of course, there will be these unscrupulous chance-takers who will try to take advantage of SASSA grant recipients. A possible reason could be funeral policies being deducted from immediately after the SASSA Grant payment. But the agency does not offer any such policy. And the agency does not allow anyone to advertise policies using its branding,' Matlou explained. Anyone using the SASSA branding in a misleading manner will be investigated in court. And it has handed investigations over to the SAPS to try find these people. It is a serious offence to misrepresent yourself as a government entity.
