Football: Nadeshiko Japan suffer back-to-back defeats against Brazil

The Mainichi03-06-2025
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan went down 2-1 against Brazil in A women's football international friendly on Monday, ending their two-game series away to the South Americans with two defeats.
Nadeshiko Japan fell to a 3-1 loss on Friday for their first defeat under new Danish manager Nils Nielsen and the world's fifth-ranked nation were beaten again by their eighth-ranked opponents at Cicero de Souza Marques Stadium in Sao Paulo.
Manaka Matsukubo, one of six changes for Japan's starting XI, hit the post on a one-on-one with goalkeeper Lorena in the 28th minute before Kiko Seike, who scored a late consolation in their previous game, sent her shot wide after skipping past the keeper three minutes later.
Despite a hint of offside, Seike gave Japan the lead a minute into the second half as she side-footed home Aoba Fujino's low cross delivered with the outside of her foot.
Defender Rion Ishikawa turned the ball into her own net in the 54th minute, however, allowing Brazil to draw level after keeper Ayaka Yamashita completely missed the ball from a corner.
Seike hit the post minutes later before Brazil hit Japan on a counter for the 79th-minute winner as substitute Jhonson dinked her shot past Yamashita.

Sinner swamps Auger-Aliassime in Cincinnati power display

World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy reacts after winning a point on the way to a quarter-final victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime at the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open tennis Jannik Sinner "felt great on the court" as he annihilated Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-0, 6-2 on Thursday to reach the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open semifinals with his 25th straight hardcourt match victory. The world number one powered through a rapid-fire opening set and overcame a wobble as he started the second set by dropping serve. The defending champion prevailed in a brief 71 minutes as he claimed an eighth victory in a row at this event and his 30th this season. "I felt great on the court today, you could see that," said the Italian, who turns 24 on Saturday. "But every day can be different. Let's see what I can do in the semis." Sinner, playing his first tournament since his Wimbledon triumph, will face either French qualifier Terence Atmane or Danish seventh seed Holger Rune for a place in the final. Auger-Aliassime meekly lost the opening set after less than 30 minutes, delivering three double-faults in the final game. After dropping his serve early in the second Sinner broke back to level at 2-all, eventually advancing as Auger-Aliassime coughed up his eighth double fault on match point. "I served well today, that was the key for me," Sinner said. "I had a small drop in the second set and I'm happy that I broke back. He moves and serves well, he's difficult to play." In women's action, French Open champion Coco Gauff beat Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals. The second-seeded American's game showed minor rust after a bye in the previous round. "I could have maybe made some more first serves in that second set, but overall, I had a lot of aces and unreturnables," said Gauff, the 2023 Cincinnati champion who went on to win the US Open title that year. "I'm happy considering where (my serve) was last week. I'm always trying to get better, but also just trying to take the little wins along the way." "I'm just trying to be happy with where I'm at now, but still doing the things I need to do to improve." Gauff, who was broken once in each set herself, finally secured a spot in the last eight with a concluding break of the 61st-ranked Italian's serve as Bronzetti hit long after 79 minutes on court. Gauf next takes on seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who crushed 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-2. Krejcikova had treatment on her left foot in the second set and her movement was clearly hampered. Paolini, the 2024 Roland Garros and Wimbledon finalist, won seven straight games on the way to a 4-0 second-set lead and rallied from 0-30 down in the final game to advance. "She's a great player and can do anything she wants with the ball," Paolini said. "But I don't think she was at 100% today. I'm glad I stayed in the match mentally to the last point." Gauff will play Paolini - whom she beat here two years ago on the way to the title - in her third 1000-level quarter-final of the season after Madrid and Rome. © 2025 AFP

Osaka to face Tauson in WTA Canadian Open semis

Japan's Naomi Osaka defeated 10th seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine to reach the semi-finals of the WTA Canadian Open, where she will face Danish 16th seed Clara Tauson tennis Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Canadian Open on Tuesday with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-2 triumph over 10th seed Elina Svitolina. Osaka, chasing her first WTA Tour-level title since the 2021 Australian Open, needed only 68 minutes to dispatch the Ukraine star and book a Wednesday semifinal with Danish 16th seed Clara Tauson, who stunned reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4. "I'm just having a lot of fun playing. I'm glad to be here," Osaka said. "I think I'll be seeded in the U.S. Open because I won my match. That was a really good goal for me. I'm just really excited." Tauson dedicated her victory to her late grandfather, who died on Sunday as the Dane was dispatching Polish second seed Iga Swiatek, who won her sixth Grand Slam title last month at Wimbledon. "Two days ago, my grandfather unfortunately passed away so I really wanted to win for him today," a tearful Tauson said after beating U.S. sixth seed Keys. "I was told the day after I beat Iga so I really wanted to come out and show my best tennis for him. Hopefully he's watching." The US Open hardcourt tuneup in Montreal is the first event where Tauson has beaten two top-10 foes, with Swiatek and Keys exiting at her hand. Tauson dominated the opening set and took full advantage of Keys giving up a break on a double fault to open the second. The Dane won 12 of 19 points on her second serves and kept Keys at bay most of the night. Keys joined a scrap heap of Montreal seeds, with the top five seeds and seven of the top 10 seeds ousted before the quarter-finals. Tauson, 22, seeks her fourth career WTA title after the 2021 Lyon and Luxenbourg Opens and this year's Auckland Open, where Osaka retired after winning the first set of the final in their only WTA meeting. "She's really tough," Osaka said of Tauson. "I played her in Auckland this year. I had to stop halfway because I was injured. So I'm really excited that I'm healthy." Osaka seeks her eighth WTA-level title, and her first since a maternity leave comeback last year. She last won a WTA-level title below the Grand Slams at the 2019 China Open. Osaka broke for a 3-1 edge in the opening set and exchanged breaks in the last three games to capture the set after 38 minutes, then cruised through the second set, taking the triumph when Svitolina hit a forehand wide. Tauson is one win away from her second WTA 1000 final, having lost the first in February at Dubai to Mirra Andreeva. The Dane dominated Keys in the first set, breaking in the fourth and sixth games, and Keys double faulted away another break to begin the second set. Tauson held from there to win, never facing a break point in the second set before holding at love in the last game to end matters after 70 minutes. Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, and 18-year-old Canadian sensation Victoria Mboko will meet in Wednesday's other semifinal. Rybakina won their only prior meeting 6-3, 7-5 last month in the second round at Washington. © 2025 AFP

Pogacar powers to big Pyrenees win to reclaim Tour de France yellow jersey

Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar crosses the finish line to win the twelfth stage of the Tour de France cycling race over 180.6 kilometers (112.2 miles) with start in Auch and finish in Hautacam, France, Thursday, July 17, 2025. (AP Photo/Mosa'ab Elshamy) cycling Tadej Pogacar powered to an impressive stage win on the first day in the Pyrenees to take back the Tour de France yellow jersey on Thursday. On a day when many wondered if he would suffer any ill effects from his crash the day before, Pogacar showed none and put himself in prime position for his fourth Tour victory with a break on the stage-ending climb to Hautacam. He finished more than two minutes ahead of main rival Jonas Vingegaard. 'You don't know how the body reacts after the crash, but it was not too bad, it was not a bad crash,' said Pogacar, the defending champion. 'I feel my hip only when I do acrobatics, but here I'm just riding the bike.' Hautacam is the resort overlooking Lourdes and Stage 12 must have felt like a pilgrimage for all the riders. Ben Healy, who wore the yellow jersey for two stages, finished well behind on a brutal day for the Irish rider. In 2022, Vingegaard dominated Pogacar at Hautacam on his way to his first Tour victory. But the Danish rider is now 3½ minutes behind his main rival in the general classification. Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel is third, 4:45 behind Pogacar. As if in a rush to face the grueling challenges awaiting in the mountains, the riders sped through the first 50 kilometers in just under an hour with the peloton chasing a large 52-man breakaway group. But their efforts on the narrow, twisting roads through spectacular landscapes and stone-house villages took their toll as exhausted riders dropped behind, one by one. Birds of prey circled overhead as the riders suffered below. Pogačar made his move with 11.8 kilometers remaining with help from UAE teammate Jhonatan Narváez, who looked over his shoulder and allowed Pogacar to accelerate past. Vingegaard initially gave chase but couldn't keep up with his rival, who overtook French rider Bruno Armirail for the lead with 11 kilometers to go for his 20th stage victory — third in this race. 'I was just looking forward for today. And then all the people were all the time coming to me and saying, 'Oh yeah, this is the revenge time,' and blah blah blah. And then when we approached the bottom of the climb, it was just a reverse story of a few years ago,' said Pogacar, a 26-year-old Slovenian. Pogacar finished 2:10 ahead of Vingegaard, with German rider Florian Lipowitz 2:23 off the pace in third. Armirail, who had been leading, followed 10:46 after Pogacar. Healy finished 13:38 off the pace. Riders took time before the stage in memory of Samuele Privitera, the 19-year-old who died after a crash while racing in Italy the day before. Privitera crashed in the first stage of the Tour of Valle D'Aosta. 'The risk that we are taking sometimes is too far.' Pogacar said before racing. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press.
