Shoplifting, voyeurism cases see uptick in Singapore in 2024; molestation cases decline
Shop theft incidents reached 4,237 cases last year, marking a 7.6 per cent increase from 3,939 in 2023, and a sharp rise from 2,652 cases in 2021, according to a report published in Channel News Asia today.
Shoplifting now accounts for 21.2 per cent of all physical crime in the city-state.
Despite the rise in shop thefts, the total number of physical crime cases remained stable in 2024, with 19,969 reported, slightly down from 19,966 in the previous year.
Shoplifting was flagged by the police as one of the top three crimes of concern, alongside voyeurism and molestation.
Voyeurism saw a 9 per cent increase in 2024, while molestation cases dropped.
Cases of theft in residential buildings, a concern in 2023, also declined.
Housebreaking and theft cases fell from 135 in 2023 to 118 in 2024, despite a brief spike during a series of burglaries believed to be linked to foreign syndicates.
Between June and August, a rash of burglaries in private estates near the Rail Corridor and Bukit Timah Road led to stolen jewellery valued at S$3.85 million (RM12.7 million).
Following the incidents, increased patrols and mobile camera deployments helped reduce housebreaking and theft.
Shoplifting remained a primary offence among youths, with 379 individuals aged 10 to 19 arrested in 2024, making up 20.9 per cent of total shop theft arrests.
Most cases involved theft from supermarkets, beauty shops, and personal care stores.
Commonly stolen items included cosmetics, food, and personal care products.
Major outlets like NTUC FairPrice, Cold Storage, and Watsons were among the top locations for shoplifting incidents.
Experts believe the rise in shoplifting could be linked to the increased use of CCTV and facial recognition technology by retailers, helping to better identify and apprehend offenders.
The SPF has been working closely with retailers under the Shop Theft Awareness for Retailers (STAR) programme.
'This expansion demonstrates the growing commitment among retailers to participate in collaborative efforts to address shop theft and strengthen their retail security measures,' said SPF.
By December 2024, over 1,000 outlets, including FairPrice Group and Sephora, joined the initiative to strengthen security measures and prevent theft.
Voyeurism cases, including upskirt offences, saw a 9 per cent increase, reaching 519 cases in 2024.
These incidents were predominantly committed in residential premises, shopping malls, and on public transport.
Of the voyeurism cases in homes, 76.5 per cent involved perpetrators known to the victims, such as ex-boyfriends or family members.
To combat these offences, the SPF introduced advisory messages at MRT stations and installed privacy partitions in public toilets.
The police have also collaborated with the Restroom Association of Singapore (RAS) to enhance security in public restrooms.
Meanwhile, molestation cases fell by 6.6 per cent to 1,427 incidents in 2024. Despite the drop, molestation remains a concern, accounting for 7.1 per cent of all physical crime cases.
The SPF has continued to raise awareness and work with stakeholders to reduce crime in public entertainment venues.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Gregory Tan noted that the stable physical crime rate in Singapore was largely due to the support of the community and technological advancements, which have boosted the ability to solve crimes.
'With these advancements, culprits will be caught and brought to justice,' Tan stated.

Angels-Dodgers fans get into ugly brawl that leads to two arrests
Things got ugly quickly in the outfield stands at Angel Stadium. During Wednesday's game between the Angels and the Dodgers, a violent brawl broke out, with punches and kicks being thrown throughout. The incident, which was caught on camera and went viral on social media, included a fan wearing a Mike Trout Angels jersey getting punched by a man in a black shirt. After the Angels fan fell back into his seat, a Dodgers supporter ran behind and kicked him directly in the head. The altercation led to two arrests, according to TMZ Sports. A spokesperson for the Anaheim Police Department said the fight 'appears to have started over the stealing of a hat,' per TMZ Sports. However, the police did not say exactly who took the cap. The Dodgers fan kicked the Angels fan directly in the head. @Actually_Borgen/X The APD said two people in their mid-20s were arrested for the fight, with one being charged with a misdemeanor assault and the other — who the cops deemed the primary attacker — is facing a felony assault charge. The identities of the two individuals have not been released. At the time of the brawl, the victim did not accept transportation to the hospital for his injuries, and it remains unclear if they went to seek medical attention following the game. Two people were arrested for the fight. @Actually_Borgen/X As for the game, the Angels ended up sweeping their rival with a 6-5 comeback win, only furthering the Dodgers' skid to start the second half of the season. Following the loss, Shohei Ohtani said that the Dodgers are doing everything possible to try and end their cold streak. 'Obviously, it doesn't feel good to fall into second place and to lose a lot of these games,' Ohtani told reporters. 'We're doing everything in our power, having close meetings, doing everything that we can to try to right the ship. We just have to do a better job.' With the Dodgers holding a 10-13 record since the All-Star break, the Padres have risen to first place in the NL West, holding a one-game lead over Los Angeles.

Ohio considering banning first-pitch bets amid Guardians gambling investigation
First-pitch bets could be on the chopping block as MLB investigates two Guardians pitchers. The state of Ohio is looking at banning 'microbets,' which would include wagers on MLB's first pitches, according to ESPN. Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) executive director Matt Schuler told the outlet that his department, at Gov. Mike DeWine's request, is looking into microbets before potentially removing some player props as legal wagers. Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz throws a pitch during a road game against the Yankees earlier this season. Bill Kostroun/New York Post The news comes after Guardians pitchers Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase were placed on leave by MLB due to a league gambling investigation. Ortiz is being investigated after a pair of his pitches received unusual gambling activity. Both pitches received heavy action on the first pitch of the inning to be a ball or hit batsman before Ortiz proceeded to throw the ball well out of the strike zone. Clase's connection to the investigation is unclear. The Guardians cleared out the lockers of both pitchers late last month. The team stated last week that 'no additional players or club personnel are expected to be impacted' by the investigation. In July, DeWine called on the state gambling commission to ban some types of player-specific prop bets. 'The harm to athletes and the integrity of the game is clear, and the benefits are not worth the harm,' DeWine said. 'The prop betting experiment in this country has failed badly.' Closer Emmanuel Clase reacts after the host Guardians defeated the Orioles on July 22, 2025. AP DeWine also asked commissioners and players unions from the major American sports leagues to support the ban. During the MLB All-Star break, commissioner Rob Manfred seemed open to getting rid of microbets. 'Certain types of bets strike me as unnecessary and particularly vulnerable, things where it's one single act, doesn't affect the outcome necessarily,' Manfred said.

Patrol boats for prolonged search operations among measures to keep NDP 2025 safe
SINGAPORE - As tens of thousands celebrate the Republic's 60th anniversary of independence on Aug 9, thousands more are working behind the scenes to keep the festivities safe. Several patrol boats will be deployed by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) to safeguard the 2025 National Day Parade (NDP) celebrations at the Padang and Marina Bay. These watercraft will be a 'strong presence... along the Singapore River, Kallang Basin, and Marina Reservoir,' said Superintendent Ryan Koh, assistant director of the major security events division in SPF's operations department. The Marina Reservoir Patrol Boats, purpose-built for prolonged patrols and search operations, and 3-series PC Class Patrol Craft, designed for interception missions and emergency rescues, will patrol the waters to maintain security and manage restricted zones. Harbourcraft activity within Singapore's port waters will be monitored by the Marina Reservoir Patrol Boats' Automatic Identification System (AIS). The boats are also equipped with xenon search lights for search and identification tasks. The 3-series craft is optimised for operations in shallow waters and can reach speeds of over 50 knots. Close to 2,000 police officers will be deployed at the Padang and in its vicinity, similar to previous years. Officers from various divisions, including the Police Coast Guard, Traffic Police, Gurkha Contingent, and Special Operations Command, will be on duty. Supporting them in responding to incidents are auxiliary police officers, the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the Singapore Armed Forces, and the Ministry of Health. 'In addition to the usual crowd control measures, the police have implemented a slew of other security measures (including) the deployment of Portable Vehicle Barrier Systems around the Marina Bay to mitigate hostile vehicles,' said Supt Koh. Various crowd control and security measures were shown to the media in a briefing on Aug 2. The Portable Vehicle Barrier System is a modular anti-ramming system that can be rapidly set up and configured for different terrains to mitigate the threat of hostile vehicles. This will be deployed at various locations around the Padang and the Marina Bay. Police patrol dogs and explosive detection dogs will assist in security patrols and conduct proactive checks at transport nodes. An Enhanced Mobicam will be used for crowd management. This device incorporates static police cameras to monitor crowds. It is equipped with a blinker, speakers, and electronic signage, allowing officers at the Police Command Centre to broadcast audio advisories and visual messages to the public. Real-time information on crowd levels and area closures around Marina Bay, including photos, will be made available on a live map called Crowd@MarinaBay. The live map can be accessed on Aug 9 from 5pm to 10.30pm at It will also be displayed on TV screens at selected MRT stations. To help the public find the nearest MRT station, lighted balloon directional signage will be set up near Raffles City Centre. Similar LED-backed signage will also be put up along the Singapore River and War Memorial Park to guide the crowds towards the Clarke Quay, City Hall or Esplanade MRT stations. The police also remind the public to remain vigilant of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activities, said Supt Koh. Source: The Straits Times © SPH Media Limited.
