Cricket club heroes praised after trying to save children from collapsed tree

Metro7 days ago
A cricket club has been lauded for their bravery after members sprinted off the field to help lift a tree that collapsed on five children in a park.
Families were enjoying the warm weather in Chalkwell Park in Southend-on-Sea when a tree suddenly collapsed, striking the group.
A seven-year-old girl was killed, three other children were injured, and a six-year-old girl is still in 'very serious' condition after the tragedy.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the young girl killed in the tragic accident and has currently raised over £23,000.
Local community members jumped into action after the tree, which witnesses said was held up by metal poles 'for years', suddenly fell.
Spokesperson for Westcliff-on-Sea Cricket Club, Tom Clark, told Metro the team didn't see the children before the incident, but quickly ran over to help.
'The area was behind our clubhouse and is busy with lots of families and children around,' he said.
'Between 50 to 60 people were involved in lifting the tree: players, spectators, members from Westcliff-on-Sea Cricket club, Old Brentwoods Cricket Club, Leigh-on-Sea Cricket Club and Redbridge Cricket Club, along with members of the public.
'It was a harrowing experience for all involved, with not only the sight of the children but the cries from the parents as well.
'Everyone reacted without hesitation and did all they could to help the children, including performing CPR and assisting the emergency services who were on the scene quickly and took control of the rescue effort.'
First team captain of Westcliff Cricket Club member Joe Robbins, said on Facebook: 'It's absolutely heartbreaking as a parent of two young girls to see what happened, and mine and the whole club's hearts go out to the parents of those children involved.
'I want to comment on the unbelievable heroism of the members at the club and our first 11 members who sprinted off the field to attend and do their best to help, and to all of those who assisted and provided for the amazing emergency services who were at the scene.
'All of us at Westcliff Cricket Club are heartbroken by what's happened, and we pass on our regards to the families involved. Have to say those police officers at the scene were a credit to Essex Police, as well as all of the emergency services.'
The club also released an official statement, reading: 'Everyone at Westcliff-on-Sea Cricket Club is devastated to learn the news about the young girl who passed away at Chalkwell Park on Saturday afternoon. More Trending
'Our condolences and thoughts go out to the little girl's family. We cannot begin to imagine the pain they must be going through. Our best wishes are with the remaining casualties, and we can only hope they pull through.'
Chief Superintendent Leighton Hammett said: 'It's not lost on me how traumatic it must have been for the members of the public who witnessed this awful incident.
'Across a matter of moments, many of them went from enjoying the warm summer weather to rushing to the aid of strangers without a second thought.
'They showed the best of Southend today, and I'm sorry this update does not bring them more positive news.'

Unexpected return confirmed in Emmerdale as villain gets set to strike again

If there's one thing Emmerdale's Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) hates it's not being in control, made a thousand times worse when he doesn't even know who's doing the controlling. In recent weeks, Joe has been left perturbed after getting himself a blackmailer, who appears to have begun waging a campaign of terror against him. First it was keying his car – which he initially blamed on Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) but when a letter was left on his bed while he was in the bathroom, at a time Billy had an alibi, Joe started to get nervous. The letter itself was enough to get the nerves jangling – it was a warning in the style of a ransom note to make Joe aware he was being watched. With Billy out of the picture, Joe is back to the drawing board for suspects with an axe to grind against him. Joe is right to be afraid, as the blackmailer is about to up the ante. He receives an envelope with a demand for stonking £100,000, laid neatly on his kitchen counter. Speaking of usually unshakable Joe's fears, actor Ned Porteous revealed to Metro: 'It's less the money, more the idea that someone had got into the house because that's the feeling you've lost your safe bubble…That's the home of the people that you really care about.' So Joe is checking his own shadow now that he has no clue who's out to get him, and whoever it is has access to his home. He shows Sam (James Hooton) the note but he's just as clueless as his boss. Then Joe's mind turns to one person he hasn't yet suspected – his recently rehired henchman Shaun. Speaking of hiring Shaun and regretting it, Ned said: 'with that comes its own dangers, you know, because hired muscles have their own anger issues and stuff like that. So we'll see.' A hint there that Shaun is connected to all of this somehow. Joe's not exactly played nice with Shaun, so it would make sense, and his reaction is to sack him for disloyalty. Shaun does not take kindly to this and threatens his former employer, but Sam arrives wielding a gun just in time. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Joe needs to protect himself and makes a snap decision to do a runner. He tells Dawn (Olivia Bromley) he has a business trip and gets ready to leave – but just as he does, he's whacked over the head with a shovel. More Trending The nightmare is just beginning for Joe as he slowly comes round to find himself in a makeshift hospital room, with his blackmailer looming over him – Dr Crowley. This is a dire situation indeed – no one even knows where he is! 'Joe's entire thing is about trying to seem in control of the situation, when that's really the furthest thing from the truth,' Ned teased. Nicola warns Ravi in EastEnders - and he'll soon learn she was right

Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) enters into the dangerous world of drug dealing again in EastEnders this week – despite Nicola Mitchell's (Laura Doddington) warnings. It all kicks off following Bernie Taylor's (Clair Norris) explosive exit last week. As viewers of the BBC One soap will recall, she had stolen thousands from their businesses in order to start a new life in Spain. After initially framing Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig), the Panesars realised what was happening and installed spyware on her laptop to finally get the evidence they needed. However, with the computer programme working on a delay, it was too late to stop her leaving. Suki (Balvinder Sopal) had already stepped to one side to let Bernie into the taxi, fearful that she would expose that she was involved in the murder of her brother Keanu (Danny Walters). In upcoming scenes, the family try to rescue their livelihoods and Ravi has to take desperate measures. He asks Nicola for a drugs contact, but she's quick to warn him of the dangers involved. With daughter Avani Nandra-Hart's (Aaliyah James) birthday fast approaching, he knows that he'll need to cash to make sure she has a perfect day. After meeting up with dealer Okie (Aayan Ibikunie Shoderu), he's forced to hide a car – which contains a stash of narcotics – in the garage. Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) reluctantly agrees to store the vehicle, unaware of the contents. It's not long before he and Kojo Asare (Dayo Koleosho) open the boot and find everything. Terrified of the consequences, Harry calls Ravi and tells him to move the car, while Kojo puts his foot down and refuses to work until it's out of sight. Nicola makes an attempt to intervene when she sees the men in a tense exchange, and later sneaks into The Arches to take a look at what's going on. Later in the week, Harry starts his shift and is shocked to see Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) working on Ravi's car. To make matters worse, the drugs have vanished. More Trending He immediately jumps to the conclusion that his mum is the thief. Let's face it, it's likely to be something she'd do! ‘Commuters thought they were invincible until 7/7 happened'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Getting off the mainland train that had taken him from Hertfordshire to Kings Cross station, Sudhesh Dahad bundled into the crowd of morning commuters heading towards the Picadilly Line. It was a hot summer's morning with a sense of excitement in the air, as the previous day London had won the 2012 Olympic bid. Amid the buzz, workers determinedly nestled their way onto busy platforms as they did every day, desperate to get the next train. It was a very crowded platform at Kings Cross, impossible to move. When I got on the train, I couldn't see anything as I was sandwiched between people,' Sudhesh remembers. 'But then, what felt like just seconds after we'd left the station, a bomb went off.' His train had been approaching Russell Square and without realising it, Sudhesh had been just feet away from the bomber, who was in the next carriage. The moment the blast happened, the dad-of-one recognised almost immediately it was a terror attack rather than an accident. 'With the UK's involvement in Iraq the terror threat was so high, and the London Underground is an easy target, I knew it was only a matter of time. But like everyone else, I assumed I was invincible,' Sudhesh tells Metro. 52 people were killed, and nearly 800 more were injured when four suicide bombers struck London's transport network at rush hour on July 7 2005. Three of the blasts occurred on the London Underground around 8.50am near Aldgate, Edgware Road and Russell Square stations. On Sudhesh's train, 26 were killed – the largest death toll of the four explosions. A fourth device exploded an hour later on a bus close to British Transport Police's HQ. Despite being so close to one of the bombs, Sudhesh walked out of the station with cuts and perforated ear drums, while others were carried out in stretchers. 'At first it just sounded like a popping noise, but I now realise it had actually briefly deafened me,' Sudesh explains. 'I even started to think I had just imagined it, but then everything went dark.' The lights went out, and those able to stand tried desperately to move with the crush to avoid falling to the floor as the emergency brakes were hit. Sudhesh said his survival instinct soon kicked in, and his only thought was getting off the train and out of the station. 'My emotions were completely numbed,' he remembers. 'I didn't even feel any of my injuries, how could I when I saw people being stretchered out near Russell Square? It felt like a close call. It was at the next set of double doors down and had there not been such a density of people, I would have been more injured. It wasn't until a few hours later that the scale of the attacks and the extent of those killed and injured were fully realised. It was something the UK had not seen since World War Two. 20 years on, as tensions rise again in the Middle East, Sudhesh fears we might see a return to the conditions which saw the four suicide bombers inspired to carry out their deadly attacks. 'With the UK involved in the Iraq war and growing conflict in the Middle East, the terror threat in London was high back then. Now we are seeing history repeat itself.' Although not ordering the British military to join today's attacks, Sir Keir Starmer, has said Iran 'can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon' as the UK watches the US launch strikes on Iran. And now in an eerie warning to the West, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Washington is 'fully responsible for the dangerous consequences and far-reaching implications of its act of aggression'. More Trending 'It's disconcerting, thankfully not to the same extent as it felt in 2005, but it's still very worrying,' says Sudhesh. 'We tend to think the consequences of war happens only thousands of miles away. But it can end up here.' Every year on the anniversary Sudhesh helps organise the memorial, but still finds speaking about the attack uncomfortable. 'The more time that passes, the more pressure there is to have done something with your time, and to speak about your trauma,' he explains. 'I never used to talk about what happened too much. There is a tension between wanting to share with someone to receive some empathy, but by doing that you can also feel your identity reduced to a victim. 'But to sound cliche, you really must live each day as if it's your last. Everyone thinks world conflict happens a thousand of miles from London, but it has come here.'
