Bob Mould to receive honorary degree from school he left for Hüsker Dü
Bob Mould, the Minnesota music pioneer who was part of Hüsker Dü and other projects, will give the keynote speech for Macalester College's 2025 commencement, the school announced this week.
Mould will also receive an honorary degree from the school, which he attended.
"Bob Mould is a rock and punk music legend who not only paved the way for other bands and sounds, but also used his esteemed platform to fiercely advocate for a more just society," says Macalester College President Suzanne M. Rivera.
Mould formed Hüsker Dü with Grant Hart and Greg Norton in 1978 during his first year attending the St. Paul college.
The group quickly gained momentum in the burgeoning punk scene, and Mould left school to go on tour during his senior year. He never graduated. Now, he'll get the degree that was almost completed while his group was cementing its legacy.
"At the time, he was in the process of writing an honors thesis on punk rock as a subculture under the guidance of sociology professor Michal McCall," the school says in its announcement.
While Hüsker Dü was gaining popularity at that time, enough that Mould set his studies aside, it was years later when the group's most pivotal albums arrived, including 1984's Zen Arcade, which has long been considered one of the great recordings in punk rock history.
"The Minnesota power trio broke all the rules of three-chord hardcore with this double-vinyl concept opus," Rolling Stone writers said, ranking it as the 13th best punk album of all time. "Bob Mould and Grant Hart traded off spit-and-growl vocals in savagely emotional hardcore blasts, but the music expanded into psychedelia, acoustic-folk rage, and the closing 14-minute feedback instrumental, 'Recurring Dreams.'"
Mould will give the keynote address at the school's Leonard Center Fieldhouse on May 17.

Conan Gray Announces New Album ‘Wishbone'
Conan Gray surprised fans this morning by announcing that his fourth album, Wishbone, will be released on August 15th. The lead single, 'This Song,' is set to drop next week. Gray shared the news in a lengthy post, revealing that he had been slowly writing new music on his own, late after shows and between tours over the past two years. 'I'd come back home and write all the things I felt nobody wanted to hear,' he explained, 'maybe even the things i didn't want people to hear.' 'But over time, I began to feel something I'd never felt before,' he wrote. 'I started to need the music. I listened in airports, in long cab trips, blaring in the shower. In heartbreak, then in joy. I started to play it for my friends, and they started to need it too. In car ride requests with the windows down, in a split pair of wired headphones on the subway home. It became an egregiously niche soundtrack to our own lives in real time, singing just for us.' After playing the songs for frequent collaborator Daniel Nigro, Gray began to record the album. 'It felt like the music was reminding me who I am, at an experimental time in my twenties where 'who I am' had no definition at all,' he continued. 'My driftwood childhood in texas. My lucid summers in London. My blue striped bed sheets in my college apartment.' Gray added that every song was written by himself, in his pajamas, in his bed. Nigro, along with Ethan Gruska, Noah Conrad, Elvira Anderfjärd, and Luka Kloser, produced the album. The fantastical album cover depicts Gray dressed like a sailor floating on a pillow and holding a large wishbone of the album's namesake. 'Here's so much left to say, but I'll say it in the music,' he wrote. In a postscript to the message, he added that 'a wishbone never breaks even.' Gray released his third LP Found Heaven last April. He subsequently went on tour that summer in support of the album. He'll be playing Governors Ball in New York this June. Miley Cyrus concealed the cost of drugs from her accountant during the making of her 2015 album by disguising them as high-end vintage clothing purchases. The 32-year-old singer and songwriter, whose battles with drink and drugs have been well-documented, made the admission during an appearance on the Every Single Album podcast. Speaking about the period surrounding her experimental album Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, Miley said: 'We called (drug purchases) vintage clothes. And every time (my accountant) saw me, she'd be like, 'Where's that, like, $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?' 'It's like, 'Oh, it's upstairs.' So I bought a lot of vintage clothes that year.' The Grammy-winning artist went on to explain to avoid suspicion, she would tell her accountant the garments were 'really delicate' and needed to be stored away to 'protect' them. She added: 'I'm so glad I survived that time in my life. I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard, but the fact that I got through it, I'm very glad I got to do it.'
